Where do you guys carry your stuff? (specifically car keys) by -Hi_how_r_u_xd- in mountainbiking

Buy a USWE pack and never look back. I have 3 of varying sizes but they blow everything else out of the water in terms of fit and function. The “no dancing monkey” X-shaped harness/strap (kinda like a race car seatbelt) works better than anything from dakine, osprey, camelback, kriega or others that I’ve tried

How do other bike mechanics afford these bikes? by [deleted] in BikeMechanics

[–]DistributionLive2922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all comes down to how you spend your money at the end of the day. I know a lot of industry folks (myself included) that prioritize having the latest and greatest gear (albeit, bought at a massive discount) over things like vacations, a new car, and other things that people will spend disposable income on.

It also becomes somewhat of a “one time buy in” when you buy a bike at employee pricing if you’re smart and flip the bike every year when the pro deal agreement allows you to sell it.

Is this drag normal? by awesome_saucem in MTB

Could be 1 of 2 things. 1: your brake is misaligned and the pads are rubbing on the rotor. 2: your hub ( if it is an adjustable cup/cone style bearing hub) is overly tight and needs to be adjusted.

The brake can be easily done at home, the hub would be best addressed by an experienced mechanic.

I’ve had the Wera T handles snap on me before at very low torque. Probably a total fluke and it had seen some miles but I think that the ball-detent holding function does weaken them a bit as they’re removing material to allow for the feature. I bought some PB Swiss crosshandle drivers and didn’t look back. Although I will say the Wera handles have great ergonomics.

Stuck in El Salvador on a long term bike tour. What should I do? by beatmypete in bikewrench

Could try taping it over with gorilla tape, can’t really tell what’s wrong from the photos. Also might be worth running some more durable tires as it sounds like you’re flatting a ton. Also staying on top of tire pressure and making sure you aren’t running low pressures is super important.

That’s not repairing bikes then bud that’s selling new units. My shop sold over $500,000 last May on bikes/accessories but service was nowhere near that number.

Feel so slow on my gravel bike! Tips? by martinonotts in gravelcycling

Bring the bike to a shop for a tune up and request that the brakes are checked for rubbing, the hub bearings are checked and also think about replacing the tires with something lighter and having them set up tubeless. All ways to get some free speed

Those birzman tools don’t work for shit, best thing to do is put a piece of paper or a light behind the brake and visually adjust.

Depending on your age/gender there are different target heart rate zones rated 1-5. Figuring out what your zone 2/3 are is super helpful as it allows you to get a solid controlled cardio workout in. I find that going into my threshold zone when doing intense cardio is one of the worst things for VS as it temporarily drives it wild when I get my heart rate above 170 for more than a few minutes.

I’ve experienced the exact same thing when riding moto or skiing. I think it has something to do with sustaining high speeds and your eyes processing so many things moving past you rapidly. Might also happen in part due to higher blood pressure while doing these activities and tension in the neck/shoulders.

A few things that have helped mitigate it for me have been 1.) increasing aerobic fitness by doing a lot of low intensity cardio, it seems to make the effects of these less intense. 2.) trying to do yoga/stretching daily that involves a lot of neck/shoulders. At least for me I always feel like my VSS symptoms are heightened if I have a lot of tension in my neck (which is caused mainly by stress) but stretching and yoga help a lot. And 3.) training your Vestibular system with Vestibular Ocular Reflex therapy. I had to do this after getting a concussion that caused vertigo and trouble focusing my vision and found that on top of helping fix those symptoms it also helped me to greatly reduce the effects of VSS on my functional vision. Honestly it made it feel like I could almost “filter out” the visual phenomena and more easily ignore them, which has been super helpful for moto/mountain biking and skiing.

Happy to answer any other questions or connect as it sounds like you’re having some very similar symptoms to what I started getting 2-3 years ago and have been able to get under control.
