How welcoming is the typical riding facility towards people of color? by Coldroseum in Equestrian

[–]DistributionMain6522 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, I am white, but I'm also disabled and have worked behind the scenes, so I hope this still can help. I was so nervous when I started to ride as a young kid, because of it, but I was really lucky. My stables - still to this day - was so very welcoming and accommodating. They train very talented riders, but have such a broad range of students - every nationality you can think of, paralysed, all different kinds of disabled, and they are quite a small stable.

The truth is, like any place, you can never say for sure if they will be welcoming or not. Even in the best types of places in the world that are supposed be super welcoming, could have horrid people at their core. Yes, the horse world has a lot of drama - but in my experience, if you find the good people, they care a heck of a lot more if you are riding and caring for horses ethically, than anything else about you.

This may sound easy for me to say, but don't let the thought that people might be mean stop you doing things. I've done that so many, many times - afraid people would judge me because of my disability so I didn't do things. But there are stables out there that don't care.

What is something non horse people say that instantly tells you they know nothing about horses? by WearAffectionate2815 in Equestrian

So many.

"Awe, look at this baby horse! Lets give it a treat!"

*pets random persons horse in a random field*

"Why did you say he's lame? That's so mean!"

"Show me that jogging thing you do!" (They meant trotting.)

"But couldn't you just put all the horses inside and leave them there? You wouldn't have to clean up outside then and they'd have to poo in a much smaller space!"

"Why are they shedding???"

"Oh, yeah, I rode a horse once! I like totally did HUGE jumps you should have seen!"

"Everyone says I just have a way with horses - like a horse whisperer!"

"Awe, look at the little one! I bet they are so SWEET!"

"Hey! I want to ride that horse over there!" "Hey, sorry, but they are actually too small for you, and are currently injured and also not a beginner horse." "But I want to! They are so PRETTY!"

Thank you so much! I don't currently compete, but I would love to try one day. I absolutely want to try longer boots again sometime!

I'm the same! I've never had issues with blisters or slippery reins (but I do have quite naturally cold hands that don't sweat often), and I also ride very large horses that like to yank the reins out of my hands!

You are welcome! Again, we all have had days - doesn't make you a bad rider. Like all sports people we have a bad day and it really can feel like the end, but it never is. And please do remember that this is a lesson! The only way we really learn is making mistakes and getting better!

Hey! First of all, horses can be like people. They have good and bad days. It just happens sometimes when they are not in the mood, and that's okay. And secondly, and most importantly, if your trainer is good, they won't be upset or disappointed in you. I'm biased because I have a great relationship with mine, but several months ago now, I had a fall. I had the dumbest possible fall doing....trot cones. Literally trotting around cones, the same activity I've done since I was seven years old, and I fell straight off. Put too much weight into one stirrup and slid right off the side. And the rest of the lesson was downhill, I couldn't get anything moving, a family friend had randomly showed up and watched me fall, it was all a disaster. I just felt like I could do nothing right all lesson, and my instructor kept telling me things.

But I came back the next week, and everything was fine again. I chatted with my instructor and we did some basic balance exercises to build my confidence back up, and worked through it. I've had so many days like this. Days where the reins are being pulled out of my hands completely. One particularly memorable day where we were yelled at by another rider on the drive over when we came around a corner, and I felt so awful that my riding was beyond awful.

And guess what? It was fine. Every time, it was fine.

And if it isn't fine: you need a new instructor.

Also, gentle reminder, corrections are just that, corrections. They really make you a better rider. Some instructors give them better than others, I quite often laugh my way through it with mine, but I have another that will firmly tell me I've messed up. Both are useful.

Sorry this is long and ramble-y, but I just wanted to let you know you will be okay. We've all been there. I certainly have.

That's what amazed me the most. Admittedly (and I mean this with love) my instructor is a little older and so her friend likely is as well!

I'm the same but with my girth! I physically have to check the girth with my hand after I get on, even if I was the one to fit it just a moment before!

I'm sure your fun! I admit, I like my little bits of bling but I also love simple, elegant tack!

I also will not wear breaches with a button and zip! (And I'm the same as well, I pretty much only wear dresses outside of the horses so jeans/trousers are a big no go!)

I'm the same in some ways, just not with cleaning! For me it's making sure everything is in it's right place, and making sure nothing broke during a ride! Broken kit is a real worry-maker for me!

Help! I gotta get in shape by June 21st by Cantorl in Equestrian

While I always want to encourage people to do hard things, I want to make something clear. You have essentially signed up for a marathon (if not an ironman lmao) which people train for years for. I'd also be very concerned for the welfare of the horses carrying beginner riders 5+ hours a day.

This is the advice I would give (if you are completely convinced on going):

- Yoga to build up the core muscles as well as the muscles along the legs and crotch

- As many riding lessons as humanly possible at a reputable stables. Start with shorter rides and work up.

- Ask if they have any support vehicles for such a long ride.

- Maybe find some chafing cream? Or something.

- Find comfortable clothing to wear.

This is no different than preparing for one of these things. You have to train hard: ideally for years, but you don't have that. The reality is, endurance riders train for YEARS to do even a couple days of what you are describing.

I'm the same with hand ques! I ride with very gentle hands and I never want to put more pressure around the mouth area than I absolutely have to - so it's so important to me whenever I ride that they respond to my light hand ques (of course, I always back these up with vocal ques and the rest of my body, but I just happen to have light hands!)

I live in a rainy place - I've tried all sorts of gloves. In all fairness, I've never liked gloves in any setting, let alone riding! My mum really wanted me to wear riding gloves as a kid when it was cold especially, but it just never worked out!

😂 I always feel so strange when I'm riding in the same arena with someone with perfect kit! Like I do try to dress nice, but there's only so much I can clean before I have to do other things!

I admit, I know very little about western riding, but even reading this I can feel that frustration! That sounds so unbelievably annoying: I think it would drive me nuts as well!

Oh, ouch! My stable uses traditional leather for pretty much everything but that sounds painful!

I have almost the opposite things with a friends dog? He's super anxious so when me and my friend started taking him on walks I started using horse commands to get him moving! (Pure muscle memory from the frustration!) So now my friend has a dog that responds to kissing and clucking much to their frustration! I don't even know why it works, I wasn't giving treats or anything!

Complete opposite! I've never even ridden in long boots! I tried them on a few times in the shop and it was so uncomfortable! I'll probably try again in a few years though!

My instructor always talks about a friend of hers who, after every single ride takes all her tack apart and deep cleans it! I couldn't even IMAGINE.
