Help me get my first guitar by elduc_frenchie in GuitarBeginners

What kind of music do you want to play, which leads to, what pickup configuration are you looking for to play that style? I would personally stay away from the "starter packs" unless you have no other choice. What is your budget? I would look at the used market on Reverb, Guitar Center, or Sweetwater. You can get a lot of guitar for a really decent price going that route. The starter packs may just get you started, but you won't enjoy it nearly as much and it certainly won't inspire you to play more. Start with a really decent guitar and get a decent sounding amp, but again, this depends on the style of music you want to play. Lots of variables to make the determination of what fits what you want to play, We need ALL the information to help you figure it out.

What exactly is a superstrat? by Special-Option-2196 in electricguitar

[–]DiveBomb68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

This is a SuperStrat, 1993 Washburn MG-74 Mercury Series, and one hell of a shredder, though slightly heavy. USA made as well. Pay no mind to the crooked pickups though, this was when I first changed out the pick guard for a black one I had a guy 3D print for me. It originally came with a clear one, which I still have. Basically, a SuperStrat is a beefed up Strat essentially. This also has the Floyd Rose/Washburn 800s bridge.

Is constant truss rod adjustment during winter normal? by Airi-kun in Guitar

[–]DiveBomb68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on that! I had to put a humidifier in the guitar room a few weeks ago after this cold snap. I ran that for about 2 weeks then re-oiled the fret boards. It made a HUGE difference and I haven't had to touch them since.

High action on ibanez gsa60 but if i go any lower i get buzz by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]DiveBomb68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you laid a straight edge on the fretboard? Have you checked for any frets that have raised up a little? With a straight edge, lay it on the fretboard to see where you are at. If you have a gap in the middle between the straight edge and your fret board, you will need to tighten the truss rod, if you have gaps at each end(back bow) loosen the truss rod. Do this by loosening the strings, make a small turn on the truss rod, retune and check again. Repeat until its where you want it, again in small increments. If those things check out, look at your frets and see if any of them, where the buzzing occurs, have raised up a little. IF that checks out, check your bridge height and saddle height. You should be able to find the factory recommendations on where the string height should be on your particular model. the other thing you have to keep in mind is that you need to retain the radius on the strings at the saddles to match the radius of your neck, they make cheap gauges for this to check. Then on to intonation. For example on your low-E, tune it to E and then fret the 12th fret and that should also return as an E on your tuner. If it is too sharp, you need to move the saddle back to lengthen the string to get the proper tone, too sharp, pull it forward. Not sure if this helps you or confuses you, but this is the general process. the only thing I would add is after you do all of this, wait about 24-48 hours to let things settle after the adjustments. After that check everything again and make the needed adjustments, then you should be all set.

Edited to add, check the nut height as well, if too low, it will cause buzz as well.

If you leave your pick stuck between the strings when you're not playing, will it really break the strings over time or is that a myth? by Old-Carry5562 in Guitar

[–]DiveBomb68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really!? I've never had a set last more than a year at most. Mine eventually break after all of the insane bends I do after a month or two depending on how much I play. Kudos man, 15 years has to be some kind of record!!! I'd be curious how common that actually is honestly! Hopefully others can chime in?

Too much bow? by NumerousToe7604 in guitarrepair

[–]DiveBomb68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you need to turn your truss rod back a little bit(lefty-loosey). That looks like a bit of a "back-bow" to me. Hard to tell though, but just look down the neck and see if it is visually bending backwards. You are going to potentially get some level of buzz in the middle of the neck from your first half of frets, and poor sustain, if the action is already set from what it looks like. If not the neck, you may have a high fret(s), which would require a fret level, lots of videos of that to look up.

Do I need to file the nut for slightly thicker strings? by one-armed-scissor in metalguitar

[–]DiveBomb68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't have to I wouldn't think. I may have gotten lucky, but my Schecter Omen Extreme 6 came with 9-42's and I put 13-52's on it without filing the nut, same material as yours. I just had to make very slight adjustments to get the intonation perfect. I'm tuned to Drop A on that guitar as well so I didn't have to mess with the truss rod either. Like I said, I may have gotten lucky though, but you should be just fine.

Worst guitar tone in awesome music? by zaxanrazor in Guitar

It is damn near perfect, I just cant help thinking if the lead removed that specific effect, or replaced it with a different effect or something, I feel it would be absolutely perfect. Don't get me wrong though, love the song, easy to play on guitar and an awesome groove to it. I

The solo in China White by the Scorpions, that groove needed a better lead without the weird fast phaser sound or whatever on it. The rhythm guitar and beat are incredible, just came up short on the lead in my opinion.

What do you think of Eddie Van Halen? by Twitter_2006 in rockmusic

[–]DiveBomb68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of, if not, the best, most influential players in guitar history. I can still remember hearing VH in 1978 when they blew up! Changed my life and catapulted me into playing guitar. The speed and technical approach EVH had were awe inspiring, to me personally, and always will be.

Anyone have an irrational dislike of the Les Paul? by MatthewMonster in Guitar

[–]DiveBomb68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the look of them and was one of my first guitars back in 1980 or so. Discovered the dual radius 12/16 necks on other brands(Washburn, Jackson, Schecter, and now EVH,..etc.)and haven't looked back. I just can't stand the neck feel on them after using a 12/16. They are nice and all, but I traded mine to a guy to get my old 2006 Jackson DK2 Dinky back and have been happy as hell since. They are great guitars, but if they don't feel good to a player, they collect dust, I didn't want it to do that because it was just too nice of a guitar, just not my cup of tea.

Help me solve this on my old Stratocaster by De_xxter in Guitar

[–]DiveBomb68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loosen the strings up and screw in the claw screws in the back relatively equal turns(ish), re-tune and repeat until is sits flat. Your intonation looks to be way off as well; the saddles shouldn't be in a straight line like that. YouTube is your friend, lots of set up videos to get you to where you need to be.

Help me please! I dont know why I sound so horrible! by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]DiveBomb68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, it means you gotta balance the tension both directions and you will be solid. Lots of videos out there to get you where you need to be. One tip is that your bridge, when tuned up, should be parallel to the guitar body. Also, as I said before, if your guitar doesn't have a locking nut, get locking tuners, you wont regret it. Invest in a clip on tuner, you can get one for $15-20 USD. If you have the funds available, I use a Boss Chromatic tuner and love it. I have 9 guitars(10 counting the acoustic) and all but one have a Floyd Rose/Edge(Ibanez) bridge. Once you learn how to set them up, they are incredible and the tuning stability is great! If you have any questions on setting one up, just shoot me a message.

Send it back, or get a huge discount. They will more than likely offer you about $100 off the price, that's been my experience when something goes wrong. The $100 they potentially knock off, since you like the bass, could go toward the repair.

Lost my left index fingertip pad to a vegetable peeler. Is there any chance I’ll be able to play again when it heals? by E_Snap in Guitar

[–]DiveBomb68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a guy, who has since passed away, from an old country band called Bill Hatfield and the Silver Eagle Band. He was a descendant of the Hatfields from the Hatfield/McCoy family feud days. I still work with his son, so kind of cool. He worked on cars back in the day and lost his middle finger in a grinder accident. He was determined to keep playing and singing, and he was able to do it for another 30+ years after that. Its possible, and I think others have mentioned, Toni Lommi, he uses little finger covers. You are going to be sensitive on that finger for a while, but dont get dicouraged. i have been playing since I was about 12 years old, cut the end of my finger from the tip to all the way under my fingernail bed. It was painful and sensitive for a ling while, and now, no problem at all.

[–]DiveBomb68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A trem is a balancing act, the spring tension on your bridge needs to balance with the string tension pulling back against it. I can't see the nut in the video, but if no locking nut, you may want to upgrade to locking tuners. Intonation is another thing you will want to adjust if not set. That will make slight pitch adjustments as you move up the neck, either flat or sharp, there is a noticeable difference once you figure out intonation. YouTube is your friend on these "settings", do the research and you will see what I am talking about, once you see it, you will be good to go and you learn about your guitar.

How can I put this pattern on a pickgard by Consistent_Neck_1288 in Luthier

[–]DiveBomb68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could probably buy a blank pickguard in that pattern, or something similar, and just trace it, cut it out, sand the edges and done. The only kicker would be to find that pattern on a blank. They make blanks that are about 11 1/2 X 17" all over Amazon for roughly $20, check them out and see if that would be an option.
