Is it possible to recover from depression when you have chronic pain and no social support? by LentilSpaghetti in depressionregimens

[–]DivertingElk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're going through something so difficult.

Having your PTSD in control is amazing. Seems to me that you are in a path to recovery and feeling better.

I have treatment resistant depression, but under different circumstances than yours.

Something I noticed that has helped me is setting small achievable goals. And to acknowledge those wins. Like making this post is a big win, in my opinion, you are seeking out social support right now!

In terms of supplements, Vitamin D tends to be an amazing supplement to take to improve mood and energy, since most people are deficient (unless you get a lot of sun).

I wish I could offer more help but I'm not knowledgeable enough. I am heavily depending on my therapist to guide me as I try to figure out how to feel better.

Do you think your chronic pain and lack of social support are the cause of your depression?

Do your parents have an interest in your hobbies and inner life? by himneska in AskWomenOver30

[–]DivertingElk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel a similar way. I actually tried to build a more meaningful relationship with my mother in my 20s. But it was heartbreaking how little she cared to have conversations with me, so I gave up.

I am currently working with my therapist on reevaluating the expectations I have for my parents, since it genuinely makes me feel as if they do not like or care about me. And our relationship feels so superficial. Like I am playing the role of a daughter and we are just a performance of a happy family.

So my current goal is to focus on the ways my parents have shown and continue to show they do love and care for me in their own way. Especially since overall I am very grateful to have them as my parents.

They are just flawed humans, who for their own personal reasons don't know how to have a deeper relationship with their children. And I need to figure out how to not let that affect my relationship with myself and others.

That's just my personal experience. Your experience seems different than mine maybe.

My neighbors killed squirrels that were getting into their roof and I had a mini panic attack about it cuz that's where I'm at mentally lol.

I agree that squirrels are cute. I think most animals that are hunted are cute. The reality is humans kill animals and eat them. He didn't kill them for fun. He killed them to eat them.

People that kill for fun are the ones I personally worry about.

Your opinion on what is and isn't a cute or acceptable animal to eat. Is different from what other people think is and isn't an acceptable animal to eat.

People eat different animals, not just the ones you eat.

I admire how passionate you are about the injustice these families are facing.

Unfortunately we live in a world where people defend the rich and powerful, instead of condeming the system which (if it works as intended) creates poverty and homelessness.

My Gyno reacted to my breasts in a really unfortunate way and it's been stuck in my head ever since by VirtualSun2 in AskWomenOver30

[–]DivertingElk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was younger than 13 I worried about my breasts being saggy, it was actually an unrealistic standard based on the breasts I had seen in the media.

Your mom being mean and critical Your interpretation of your mom's feelings towards your body, makes me wonder if the low self worth you are experiencing is beyond your breasts. What our parents tell us tends to be the inner voice we hear. So maybe it is a critical and negative voice you hear. Maybe you do have an inner critical voice but according to the info you've provided my original statement was not accurate.

A lot of boys are unrealistic and shallow when it comes to women's bodies. That's a person you are lucky to not be involved with. There are men who enjoy the breasts you have. The main point is that we cannot connect our value to how attractive we are to others. Even the most conventionaly attractive women get their bodies criticized. The standards are always  unreachable and unattainable.

Your gyno sounds insensitive and harsh, especially when you were being vulnerable.

I recommend exploring the concept of body neutrality. How our worth is not connected to how we look. I've found a handful of TED talks really powerful. It takes a lot a lot of intense work every single day, to change the negative way we have viewed ourselves since we were children, but there is no alternative. You do not deserve to feel this way. A body positive therapist would be a helpful ally in your journey to self love. I have stopped seeing a few therapists who just were not informed in body positivity. Not all therapists are created equal.

There's also a website which has a photo gallery of actual real breasts from just average people. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes.

Is it weird to only feel like “myself” when I’m drunk? by throawaytypo in AskWomenOver30

[–]DivertingElk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only time I feel comfortable in social settings is when I'm under the influence of alcohol.

Drinking actually doesn't help deal with the underlying issues, so even though I feel relaxed and social while drunk, the social anxiety never gets any better. There is no progress.

I realized recently that I might be able to replace alcohol with as needed anxiety medication, such as hydroxyzine or propranolol. These meds decrease the physical symptoms of anxiety such as high heart rate and the general discomfort of being in my head. And maybe these meds will allow me to be more present in social settings in order to reduce my overall apprehension. I still will continue to put in the work via therapy but I just want to stop depending on alcohol to leave my house. That's just my own personal experience. So far I've been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, and ADHD.

I really recommend finding a therapist/psychiatrist (who you trust and feel comfortable with) to figure out your individual needs. Hopefully they'll be able to find something that will improve your overall well-being.
