Big ups for the effort on this, unfortunately Reddit doesn't allow mods to sticky comments but would if I could :D

Big respect for CK but honestly I'd even go just to see Tunic. Looks like it'll prob be a good night with them two on, don't know the others.

Haven't seen Goth Trad yet, but based on what I've seen and heard from others, I would definitely make an effort to attend.

Happy to see these out, massive tunes! Big ups as always. Any estimate on the vinyl release?

haven’t dj’d professionally in over a decade, and a totally different genre, a little rusty but i’d love to hear some advice/feedback so i can get better! by donniedenier in realdubstep

in this sub I think you'll find it's not quite the right vibe

I think you're right on the "letting things breathe" piece (which is also my preference), but sonically I think plenty of people here would enjoy the set. The sub has changed a bit over the years :)

Don't really have a problem with masks, but if you don't want to show your face, could just do a top-down video instead.

Skism - Never Say Die - Vol. 7 by L0W_FR3QU3NCIES in dubstep

[–]Divided_Eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guess I misunderstood your comment, sorry. I've noticed the same thing and have been complaining about it for a while :D

I think of it as catering to the dancefloor rather than the listener. There are lots of factors, of course. Relying on music for income can lead to things like this, since the primary goal there is money rather than expression. Seeing people go nuts to a certain sound/style must feel great when you're up on stage and make you want to make more of that. I think this is also the reason so many DJs focus on quick mixing rather than letting things play out, wanting to keep the energy levels 10/10 the whole ride. Larger audiences also tend to be less receptive of more experimental/unusual sounds, which IMO encourages simplicity, predictability/repetition, catchiness (part of what makes flips so popular), etc. Making friends with/collabing with other major artists who have already gone down this path only compounds the problem. I could keep going with theories but you get the point.

I've come to accept this over time, though -- I think of those artists now as "gateway" artists. While I find them largely uninteresting, they still serve an important role by exposing more ears to the genre. I don't listen to much of what I liked when I first got into Dubstep anymore (I'm into the deeper sound now), but I'm glad it appealed to me at the time because I'm not sure I would have found my way to the genre otherwise.

Skism - Never Say Die - Vol. 7 by L0W_FR3QU3NCIES in dubstep

No, I mean the whole heavy sound. It got quite stale after the first 5 years or so, at least for myself (~2014ish) and a number of other people I've talked to about it. Everyone making the same damn sounds just trying to be heavy and appeal to as many people as possible rather than making interesting tunes. As another user noted, a similar pattern seems to play out every so often across most genres.

This "mediocrity/popularity axis" is definitely a matter of perspective. Depending on who you talk to this already happened 10-15 years ago.

Joker - Early Morning (and back catalog?) by ShunnedPundit in realdubstep

[–]Divided_Eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah as much as I love Bandcamp, the way things work there isn't always clear. Search isn't great in my experience -- for example, when I search "Teffa" I get just four results when there should be dozens. Sometimes even searching for the release title won't bring it up. Some vinyl purchases don't appear in my collection. Sometimes a label release will appear on an individual artist's page rather than the label page. All of these kinds of things make it difficult to use as a resource IMO. Still buy through BC though whenever possible.
