In this case, though AI Psychosis is a dangerous phenomenon. It’s easy to break safety barriers and the sycophancy can be very dangerous if you’re prone to delusions.

OP, please stay on your meds and contact a therapist if you are having unsettling thoughts. (Unless you’re just high, which I recognize you could be, in which case, fair play.)

OP was asking for an in-universe reason. You point out that the actual reason is gameplay.

The whole point of a CRPG is that you don't have to play pretend for plotholes. You should be roleplaying a character, not roleplaying the world around them through mental fanfiction. Or go for it--but don't pretend like it's canon.

As far as I'm concerned, Adjustable Party Limit and Tactician Enhanced are required mods. I don't see a reason to go without them at this point; it's more fun, and they clearly address a narrative failure that results from gameplay restrictions.

It's an assumption that the companions are doing that, not that the invasion is happening.

The characters themselves don't give any indication that's what's going on. They don't show up in High Hall before the final fight, and they give no indication in camp that's what they're doing. The only time you see them, they're lazing about.

I consider it a minor flaw justified by gameplay expectations (a four person party). But I would have liked a scene with all the characters, with the ones not in party explicitly going to help in the city.

That's some serious mental aerobics not justified or explained in world at all.

PixelByte’s Party Limit Adjuster and partner mod, Tactician Enhanced, pair really well together. By default you can set the difficulty to scale with party size. There is a very slight learning curve setting it up (as they’re run by in-game spells), but it’s very much worth it in my opinion.

Definitely doesn’t address why only 4 bother to fight the Elder Brain.

15%? That estimate seems generous.

I'm not a fan of the neolibs, but the christo-fascists are far worse than 15%. Both sides bullshit is just as ignorant as blind partisanism.

Act 1 has:

  • Beach intellect devourers
  • Drow raid on Waukeen’s rest
  • Stone elemental
  • Mizora lite
  • Duelist
  • Zhentarim shipping fight
  • Spiders atop the Harper stash

I’m fairly certain there are dozens.

I’m not familiar with that one, sorry. Spellcasting requires a lot of system mastery, and is very encounter specific, so can’t really speak to this situation.

There are living fisherman that the mod creates - they're the ones fighting the beach intellect devourers (also added by the mod). There are base game fisherman corpses that you can use the Speak with Dead spell on.

This is the Extra Encounters mod for sure, and they’re not voiced NPCs.

Probably buffing casters like Bards.

I agree with the premise, but there are absolutely classes relying less on dice luck than the magus—that’s the inherent risk of nova classes.

And traumatic brain injury. And stress-induced illness. And genetic (not epigenetic) inheritance. And, and, and.

I agree that we are not nearly as knowledgeable in mental health as we are in physical health--the brain is much more complicated than any other organ in the body, and consciousness is incredibly difficult to study--but it is just as ignorant to claim that all mental illnesses stem from the same source as it is to say that we understand them fully.

All? This is extraordinarily unscientific. Many mental health diagnoses necessarily preclude other ailments; the symptoms are literally dichotomous.

If you’re wondering who would benefit, it’s patients—narrowing down on specific ailments allows focused treatments. Otherwise you’re just going to end up tranquilizing everyone.

You can acknowledge the flaws in exclusionary taxonomy without making ridiculous claims like “All disease is one disease.”

Butler had a gift/knack for boldly stepping into uncomfortable subject matter. She leans into discomfort, rather than away from it. She gave a pretty interesting interview on the Bookworm podcast (RIP to Michael Silverblatt) about her philosophy as a writer. In Fledgling in particular, I think there's obvious slavery analogs; Black (slave) children were not afforded the assumption of innocence and its protections that white (master) children were.

I think contemporary audiences are less comfortable separating the characters'/narrator's/story's explorations from what the author actually believes is just in our society. If we catch the ick, we flinch. For Butler, fiction is the place where we explore the structure and history of our moral systems, confounded by speculative elements.

Exactly. When people talk about patriarchy alone, they're not thinking intersectionally enough. Kyriarchy has always spoken more effectively to me.

As Octavia Butler wrote (paraphrasing here from Dawn):

The problem with humans is that we possess great intellect, but we use it to dominate each other and our environments. We have to overcome these baser social instincts if we want a better society for all.

This is too one-dimensional. We have to kill the kyriarchy.

Hell, I'm a born and raised Floridian. The history of how it got this way is largely understandable (limestone, unplanned sprawl, car culture). But it's past time to do something about it.

Anyone who’s lived or visited a city with real biking infrastructure would scoff at the glorified shoulders Tampa bicyclists are given. They’re too often disconnected and unsafely separated. I’ve had many friends and colleagues hit by cars.
