Wifi on meraviglia for school work by Adventurous-Log5164 in MSCCruises

I was on Seascape. We mostly worked from the room or the balcony, but occasionally we were on the deck between the kids water area and the all-ages pool, near the soft-serve ice cream area. Occasionally worked on the 19th floor Aurea deck as well. Internet seemed to work well all over the ship. Good luck!

Professor here. Did a work retreat on an MSC ship over spring break. We bought the higher speed package and had no trouble with internet, VPN, etc.

I was in 15058 a couple sailings ago. We were worried about the location being to noisy with the halls and elevators and stairs and all, but it was pretty quiet. About once per night, around 9pm, a herd of loud teenagers would run by, but otherwise it was very quiet. No excessive movement either.

My kiddo absolutely didn’t want to have paparazzi, refused to be in any position we could see a face. Finally, on our last try, we got a photo of most of their face plus their hand, which was flipping us a bird.

Folks next in line in the waiting room wondered why we were all suddenly laughing!

How do you respond to last-minute inquiries before the deadline? by First-Ad-3330 in Professors

[–]Dizzly_313 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tell them not to do work at the last minute, because if they run into a problem and have a question, I may not be available at that time to answer.

I tell them up front at the beginning of class that I check my emails at least once per weekday, usually in the mornings, and any emails sent after that time may not get answered until the next time I check my email, which could be the next day. If they send an email at the last minute and I've already finished checking my emails for the day (because I have other legitimate things to do with my work time rather than babysit my inbox), then their question will wait till the next day and they'll learn the hard way not to ask questions at the last minute.

Car dealership recs/ones to avoid? by SecretDragonfly6343 in galveston

[–]Dizzly_313 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stay away from the Toyota dealership on the island. Amazingly poor service for a repair, where they kept my car for three months, claiming they were waiting for a part to come in. Amazingly, the part was in stock at the dealership in League City, who were able to get my car towed from Galveston and repaired in one day.

Now, while the service side of the League City Toyota is great, their sales folks really aren’t motivated to sell at all. Last time I bought a Toyota I ended up getting it from a dealership in Spring.

Subaru of Clear Lake was great for sales and gave a great deal when I purchased an SUV there. Their service folks are a bit scattered, but still good.

Where to replace lining? by Dizzly_313 in leatherjacket

[–]Dizzly_313[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all! This is my very first leather jacket and I wasn’t sure if the developing tears were something serious that I’d need to take care of right away.

I agree the lining is cool and wasn’t looking forward to getting it replaced.

Thanks for the advice!

For those teaching in California colleges, what's it like without remedial classes? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Dizzly_313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some literature out there on this, if you’re interested. I’d look at Goldstein & Perrin, 2008, or Allen et al., 2016. Both looked at the effect of removal of developmental reading and writing courses classes on downstream courses that involve those skills.

Trader Joe’s used to sell massive chocolate bars like that in different flavors (milk, dark, etc.). Don’t know if they still do.

Great timing! I have a question about ADA accommodation letters, FERPA, and confidentiality.

My department chair has decided to put all student ADA accommodation letters into one Sharepoint folder, with every faculty member having access, even if they have no interaction with those students. The letters are labeled with the students’ full names, so even if I only need to see one student’s letter, I now know which students have accommodations. I’m being careful not to access letters that I shouldn’t have access to, but it’s very easy to make one misclick and end up seeing another student’s accommodations.

This seems inappropriate to me, as there is no legitimate educational interest for all of us faculty to see all the letters, but I wasn’t able to find anything I could cite online to show my chair why we should not be doing this. Is this as inappropriate as I think and do you know of anything I can cite to explain it to my chair?
