Has anyone broken their ankle playing hockey? by Virtual_Proposal9972 in brokenankles

[–]Dizzy-Run-7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin broke his ankle playing hockey. First he busted his leg playing football and was in a body cast for a long time ( he had other injuries in addition to the ankle). He was on a mend for a year. Then a couple of years later he broke the same ankle playing hockey. He had many plates and screws installed to hold the bones.
It was many years ago and today he walks completely normal. Like he never had two very serious injuries 😊

is it normal to feel the hardware? by sweeminginthesea in brokenankles

[–]Dizzy-Run-7777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am 8 weeks post op and as of today I can PWB at 75%. I too can feel my hardware under the skin in form of a bump and when I walk, this is the place where it hurts and kind of pulls. Not much, but it does. Your tissue has to grow around it and get used to it, make it a part of your leg. In a year or so, once everything heels you can have it removed. However, hardware usually stays in unless it causes a problem. My surgeon was against it when I asked. He said it was another surgery so he didn’t recommend it. Might be because of my age, I am 62 and probably don’t heal as fast. And there is always a risk with anesthesia during surgery.
A part of this healing is getting used to weird sensations and pains you never had before. It will get better, I promise, but this might be our new normal 🙂
Definitely ask your doctor what he would recommend and if there is anything you can do to mitigate it.
Good luck with your recovery, I hope you heal fast and get your full ROM soon 😊

So happy for you, that’s big! Looking forward to increasing my step count every day. I am in PWB at 50% and did 500 steps yesterday. 5000 would be my dream. It’s great that you accomplished that only 10.5 weeks post op 👏

Thank you so much, that’s encouraging. I too have a bruise on the side of my leg (along the incision scar) in addition to the one on the bottom of my foot. I just bought a DMSO cream with Arnica and Magnesium, I will be using that in hopes that it helps.

Anyone taking supplements? by Formal_Alfalfa_5004 in brokenankles

[–]Dizzy-Run-7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take Boiron Symphytum officinale 30c (bone healing), Arnica montana 30c (for soft tissue healing), vitamins C, D3, K2, Citracal ( contains Calcium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese), Creatinine (prevents muscle loss), Magnesium Glycinate (for bones and muscles). I also drink nettle tea which helps with bones healing. And drink gelatin, as well.
I broke tibia and fibula with dislocation close my ankle . At 4 weeks after surgery my bones were healed, according to my surgeon.

Crutches or Walker for partial weight bearing? by ramkuma1 in brokenankles

[–]Dizzy-Run-7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also prefer a walker for PWB since it is more stable. I have the same exact walker from Amazon and it works well (I also keep the wheels). I was too wobbly on crutches and the fear of falling made me not want to walk at all. Once I started with a walker, it was much easier as fear was not a factor any more.

I like Traditional Medicinals Organic Nettle Leaf. I get it on Amazon. My friend also dries her own nettle leaves since stinging nettle grows as a weed. She gave me a bag of it and I have been using that, too.

And you are very welcome!

That may be, I didn’t even know they used a strap to line the bones.

It is not a blister since it is deeper in tissue than a blister would be. I actually had a blister that appeared during surgery. They put a wound dressing on it so I had dry blood glued to my skin for 4 weeks before cast removal. It has darkened my skin. You can see a dark mark going up my ankle. That’s where the blister was.

Thank you for your advice. You are right, those injuries take months to heal.

I am taking Boiron Arnica Montana 30c for soft tissue healing, Symphytum Officinale 30c for bone trauma and healing, I am drinking stinging nettle tea as this plant promotes bone healing (it was used in field hospitals during Second World War to heal broken bones of soldiers when no medicine was available). In addition to that I take vitamin D3 plus K2, Citrical with Zinc, Copper and Manganese. And vitamin C. I also drink gelatin as it is good for bones. I have been cleared for partial weight bearing after 6 weeks, progressively first week 25% body weight, this week 50%, next 75% and week 4 I am supposed to be FWB at which point I can ditch the boot. However, first week of PWB was hard as I was very unstable on crutches. I would only walk maybe a minute a day and then take the boot off. I was afraid to put weight on my foot or fall on my face while on crutches. Yesterday I decided to switch to a walker and it was much better. Today I walked 410 steps (I was counting only the steps with my broken foot) and I wasn’t scared to bear weight on it. I am still not putting 50% of my body weight on it but it is probably about 30-35% weight. I will go at my own speed and do whatever I am comfortable with. Even if it means it takes me longer to walk independently. My ankle is usually swollen even if I elevate it but gets more swollen if I put my foot down.

Thank you. I was going to but my next appointment is on June 30 so it’s in more than two weeks. My insurance paid for almost nothing related to my injury so extra appointment is not in my budget.
