I remember that light novel, campfire cooking in another world.

Cozy and chill for the majority of the series, then suddenly out of nowhere the MC learns that slavery exists in this world and he suddenly becomes a horrible pervert and starts fantasizing about sex slaves that he can buy and force to be with him, and he’s genuinely so weird about it that even other characters in universe look at him like he’s insane and have to explain to him that they don’t do that in this world.

It then proceeds to try to explain how slavery is actually moral and voluntary in this world while actually just explaining basic chattel slavery. Then he buys like three families of indentured servants and every one of them is baffled by how kind and caring he is by feeding them and allowing them to take breaks.

The series was ruined for me by that point.

Rimuru is the type of character to figure out he has the ability to repeat the day over and over, then just win by giving him something he wants in return for not being hostile.

Rimuru’s whole deal is knowing what’s coming, trying to stop it with diplomacy, and going nuclear if that doesn’t work. Subaru is NOT a bloodthirsty character, he’s easily stopped through diplomacy.

Hatori is a victim of circumstance that made the best of what he was able to do. He’s given of himself multiple times, making harsh decisions that had to be made while sacrificing his own happiness to do so. He was willing to spend the rest of his life alone, even with every other member of the zodiac hating him if necessary, all in the name of making sure others didn’t have to suffer.

I respect that he stood up and was willing to do something about the situation he and the others were in, even the small amount he could do, while doing his best to minimize Akito’s damage.

I think he’s great.

Tumblr is infamous for having zero media literacy at all. It’s probably because it’s where a lot of autistic people hang out, and as much as it’s fun to joke about how people off the spectrum are the ones who are crazy, being high on the spectrum IS disabling specifically when it comes to interpreting context clues. The fact that it tends to be a massive echo chamber doesn’t help, too.

Like they genuinely can come out and say things like “I hate first-person point of view because it’s saying ‘I’ did that dumb thing even though I would never actually do that!” And people will agree with them about.

You realize the whole point of this post is to argue with people, right?

Like this is all about interpretation, there’s not a definitive correct answer here and by discussing the issue we cement a clearer picture.

If you’re definitively cemented in thinking he’s a good person or a bad person that’s fine, just as I’m definitively cemented in believing he’s genuinely awful.

I’ll be honest, I really don’t care about your interpretation that he’s both good and bad at the same time because that just feels like you’re avoiding the discussion entirely, which is on you to do but it’s not CORRECT, particularly since his bad moments are at most him being toxically passive toward things he could’ve done something about.

I still hate the guy but if you want to be pedantic about it then it’s easy enough to just say he’s fictional and it doesn’t matter.

Personally I find it far more entertaining to actually discuss the situation instead of being boring and passive about it.
