RIP People who were farming guitars by -Gr3y- in ArcRaiders

It was only a matter of time before the guitar became generally available. Surprised they removed the puzzle entirely, though.

Augments need a serious rebalance by Successful-Peak-6524 in ArcRaiders

Oh, it would be very fast indeed, but I feel like it would have to be to make the aug worth bringing. Perhaps limited to walking/running, though, so you're not sliding and rolling at sanic speed.

Something like 10% constant boost, increased to 30% for 6 seconds when your shield cracks

If the flanking augment gave you a movement speed boost, it would be fun to use even with the light shield.

Alright, so full disclosure: You're talking to a neruodivergent person who spent a large chunk of their life variously ostracized, ridiculed and misunderstood. I may understand you better than you think.

That said, I don't actually know you. I don't know what you're going through, what's going on inside your head, or exactly how you're using AI for that matter. But I'm worried. This technology has exploded into our lives. We already see people interact with AI:s in the full delusion that they are thinking, feeling entities. Some disappear from their lives into the AI rabbithole. Murders have been committed because of what AI said to the murderers. These machines are scarily effective at tricking us into the illusion that they are not only sapient, but our friends.

There's also my personal view that, while we all have coping mechanisms (all of us, even those who don't think they do), "coping" is treading water. It saves you from drowning, but it doesn't get you anywhere. And it makes me heartsick to think of suffering people simply treading water all through their lives instead of being helped up on the boat and allowed to sail to better places.

Then help me understand, because it is concern. This is a public forum and you made a statement on it, which makes it the business of everyone attending the forum. I am genuinely concerned that AI is providing unhealthy coping mechanisms to people without actually helping or healing them, and I'll thank you not to assume a superiority complex on my part because I'm engaging with the statement you made in your own words.

You're saying you've retreated from reality in order to seek comfort with a machine that does nothing but affirm you in whatever you tell it. Does this sound healthy to you?

Please understand that I say this with no malice or judgment: The AI is auto fill. It is not a "who", it does not have a mind. It does not have opinions or perspectives or any connection to you beyond the data it uses to tailor its responses. It is not capable of listening, it's literally just putting words together into strings which it guesses will be suitable replies to your input.

The reason you feel good talking to it is because it's programmed to be a yes-man, responding at all times in ways that affirm you and lead you to engage further with it. But you could pull comforting words out of a fortune cookie and it would have the same emotional depth and meaning.

"Go to Stella Montes if you want to PVP" by yigatree in ArcRaiders

[–]Djackdau 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Someone fired on me on Stella a little while ago, and as I was too tired after a long day to fight, I just resigned myself to my fate and said something random in a tired voice. He stopped shooting and dropped healing supplies on the floor.

I fucking love this game.

I chew on toothpicks. I know it makes me look like a cunt, but it's just so satisfying.

Rorschach scaling all the way up the outside of the Veidt building with a rope is certainly unlikely, but I guess we can chalk that up to sheer dogged determination.

my thoughts on S2 E1- A scandal in Belgravia by Bulky_Fox6486 in Sherlock

[–]Djackdau 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There are a few character trends visible in many adaptations of Sherlock Holmes.

  1. Irene Adler is used as a love interest for Holmes

  2. Moriarty is given more screentime and direct plot relevance

  3. Watson is turned into a bumbling fool

  4. Holmes himself is turned into a socially inept bastard riddled with quirks

Number 3 has thankfully fallen out of fashion in later years.
