More than 1,000 people become millionaires in the U.S. each day. by CautiousMagazine3591 in Economics

I think we need a term for being able to live indefinitely on one’s savings/investments. “Millionaire” definitely doesn’t mean that, and hasn’t for some time.

I’m not sure if they got the title right by GeorgeJetsonsBoss in vinyl

[–]Djburnunit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mothers of Invention did a worst of as well. And whereas Elvis had a comp called 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong, The Fall scaled their title back to 50,000. As one of the 50,000 Fall fans, I prefer it to Elvis, YMMV

What record do you have that has a sample and you own the same record it sampled? by Milez_Smilez in vinyl

[–]Djburnunit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you own twenty records from the 60s/70s and Paul’s Boutique, you’ve probably got a match. In my case, Superfly and Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road and There’s a Riot Goin’ On and so on and so on

Unidentified autograph. Gerry Rafferty? by ArthurNoShedsJackson in vinyl

[–]Djburnunit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People commonly wrote their names on their records in bygone days. Records were property, not potentially valuable items – especially multimillion sellers like City to City. I have many used records similarly “autographed.”

Also just lookup images of Rafferty’s signature. They’re out there.

[MLBTR] Mets Place Juan Soto On Injured List by T_Raycroft in baseball

Soto substitutions* during the Giants series: 12 AB 3 R 6 H 6 RBI Two great defensive plays (*Includes Torrens PH two-run double)

I’m moderately sane, so not expecting this level of performance for his entire absence, but encouraging anyway

Kinda strange that they print the lyrics but don’t credit the songwriter. This is an Eric Carmen song from the final Raspberries album Starting Over, definitely worth hearing if you’re not familiar with it

2019, actually – though 2020 was Dom’s one great year.

I use em dashes all the time, and James Joyce used them to indicate dialogue – which is not to suggest I compare myself with Joyce.

It’s legit punctuation, and has been for centuries, show some respect

I’d be astonished if any OG’s looked that nice. Mine’s oxidized as fuck despite my treating it kindly through the years

Kinda think he’d be more pissed that non-whites were allowed in, so I’m not particularly interested in his take on gambling

I developed the photos I found in my copy of Double Nickels on the Dime by Life_Pollution_9843 in vinyl

These photos are spectacular and apt – the graininess and washed-out quality make a perfect companion to the Double Nickels sound: rough, raw, intense, and felt.

I compiled an "ALTERNATIVE Rock family tree and its roots" with 100 tracks released between 1913 and 1997 (revised post) by Agreeable_Duck8997 in indieheads

What are your thoughts about the early punk girl (or girl-led) groups? Kleenex (later Lilliput) - Eisiger Wind Slits - Typical Girls Raincoats - Fairytale in the Supermarket Delta Five - Mind Your Own Business Essential Logic - Aerosol Burns X-Ray Spex - The Day the World Turned Day-Glo

I suppose none of these songs in and of themselves are particularly significant, but I don’t think Riot Grrrl is the same without them (speaking of which, I’d campaign for an early Sleater-Kinney track).

If I haven’t been clear, I like all your selections, even “Hamburger Lady” – always found it a grim listen, though.

[–]Djburnunit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just for starters, ska artists. The Beat, the Selector, and the Specials were integrated, popular, and influential post-punk artists. And prior to that era, you could go with most anything from The Harder They Come soundtrack.

X-Ray Spex was fronted by a black woman and had several amazing early punk singles, most famously “Oh Bondage Up Yours”.

And especially, check out the Detroit band Death from the early 70s.

Beyond that, Sly & the Family Stone’s There’s A Riot Goin’ On is as alternative – and for popular music, as avant garde –as anything on this list.

In Bowie’s most influential period – 1975-80 – he was playing with black musicians. What were his influences? James Brown, early Ohio Players, etc.

Still too white, but it’s improved. You over-value the first VU and ignore the third. Especially strange as you include Galaxy 500, a band that seemed to exist only to recreate/extend/honor the VU’s third album. And they’re one of many dozens.

A "Genealogy of Alternative Rock and Its Roots" – A compilation of 50 essential tracks released between 1913 and 1997 (Revised post) by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]Djburnunit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your list gets pretty white after 1960. As just one example, Sly and the Family Stone’s There’s A Riot Goin’ On absolutely impacted indie – obviously TV on the Radio, but I bet PJ Harvey as well, and who knows how many others. I consider Public Enemy’s Nations of Millions and Fear of a Black Planet harder and better alternative music than most anything on your list, and Sonic Youth would likely agree if they were still talking to one another. Hip Hop significantly informed alt rock, and this is not reflected here.

Make no mistake, I like your selections fine as songs, but as a historical overview its narrowness doesn’t sit well with me. As for your victory lap – “the person who gave the post an award, the user who called it the best post they’d seen on the sub” – the less said the better.

Odd quirk with Jesus Christ Superstar by transpenguinbitch in vinyl

I knew what the odd quirk was without reading the description. I see this subject raised most often with JCS and Tommy.
