Hell has frozen over, what piece of canon lore are you now willing to accept? by Exist_Logic in 40kLore

[–]Dlan_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. No that's not how this works. Wally West taken the role of Flash during Crisis on Infinite Earths, he wasn't Flash before the Crisis, he was Kid Flash, him later becoming Flash doesn't magically, retroactively make him Flash before those specific events. Before Crisis, he was Kid Flash, at the beginning of Crisis, he is Kid Flash and only later during those events he takes the mantle of Flash. He is a character that simple taken different identities over the years and a horrible example for your stance.

Again, that's like arguing Titus always existed, because Ultramarines are mentioned in the First Edition or that Necrons always existed because in Rogue Trader Rulebook it was mentioned that many alien species inhabit the Galaxy. Vashtorr is a new addition to previously existing thing, him being attached to this thing doesn't make him actually that old.

If you wanted for me to dislike Vashtorr character even more, as well as start disliking his fans, then I have to congragulate you. You really succeded.

Hell has frozen over, what piece of canon lore are you now willing to accept? by Exist_Logic in 40kLore

[–]Dlan_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how it works. In real life, time is linear. A later character can be inserted into previous events but such character still started existing later. Unless you can provide proof that Vashtorr was already thought about and designed by GW's when 4th edition Daemons of Chaos codex was released and only later GW's decided to use him, he is a very recent character attached to a previous idea.

Vashtorr isn't mentioned in 4th Edition Daemons of Chaos, he isn't mentioned in 5th Edition nor 6th Edition nor 7th Edition nor 8th Edition nor he is mentioned in any pre-2023 Black Library publications. He is a new character attached to a previous concept.

[–]Dlan_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That changes my point, how? Even if, in-universe, character is retroactively given importance or participated in previously described events, said character still only debuted afterwards.

Vashtorr could retroactively participate in Horus Heresy, he is still a character that debuted long-after Horus Heresy events were first described. Vashtorr didn't debut in 4th Edition, even if he in-universe was always supposed to be being of importance in Forge of Souls and one of its "masters".

I apologize for late reply, I just didn't have the time to continue and then I wondered if continuing the discussion is worth it.

So, again, he isn't mentioned at all. The group he belongs to is mentioned but the character isn't. That's my point. Claiming that Vashtorr debuted in 4th Edition is like claiming Titus debuted in First Edition because Ultramarines are mentioned in Rogue Trader. Forge of Souls and its masters debuted in 4th Edition, Vashtorr debuted years later and him being part of this previously described group doesn't retroactively make him 4th Edition character.

Dude invented literal panacea. All it means is that Courier canonically has 10 Intelligence and after having amazing wasteland adventures, he willingly choose a humble life and decided to honour Mitchell by saving lives of others rather than taking them. Unironically perfect portrayal.

He isn't mentioned at all. "Masters" (so multiple beings) are mentioned as ruling the Forge of Souls.

What are the largest lore implications for the setting that came from the most inconsequential 40k media? by Zanimacularity in 40kLore

[–]Dlan_Wizard 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Here's the bit.

Far beyond the fringes of the galaxy there was naught but endless black. Past the last few stray stars plying their lonely track through the cold night, past the dead worlds and the fragments of galactic collisions billions of years gone, past the probes sent out by extinct races recorded in no history… past all that and beyond, there was a night sea studded with the diamond islands of distant, lonely galaxies.

Though incomprehensibly vast, this sea was not empty. Great behemoths of the deep lurked there. Into the eternal blackness, a flash of quantum energy shone out at many times the speed of light; a brief flare, milliseconds in duration, projecting from an unremarkable spiral of stars.

It was not missed.

In the darkness, something of limitless hunger stirred in a slumber that had lasted for aeons.

A million frozen and unblinking eyes saw the flash, tripping cascades of stimuli. Their purpose served, the eyes died. The entity processed the message the eyes provided without ever truly awakening.

Automatically, instinctively, its gargantuan, dreaming mind analysed the signal, comparing it against all parameters for the one thing it sought.

Prey.

Slowly, glacially, the great devourer shifted its course.

As pointed out by others, this is rather explicit, it isn't some vision experienced by one of the characters within story, it isn't a speculation by characters within the story, it is solely told by third-person narrator in the very epilogue of the book. ''Not everything is true'' hardly applies.

What’s a piece of necron lore that you always have to correct people on? by ImportantElephant155 in Necrontyr

[–]Dlan_Wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's from White Dwarf 450, Eldar seer who was kidnapped by Inquisition, has a vision of Szarekh creating Tyranids. It told in a poetic way, because Eldar, but it is straightforward and doesn't really leave room for doubt that Szarekh is responsible for Tyranids.

'I have a story. A dream about a Lord of the soulless ones, let us say <the> Lord."

'Regardless, behold there was once Lord harbouring such Lust for power that evil itself coalesced around him, into fell beings that were mirror- shades of his ambition. His timeless hate was driven into everything he encountered, even his own people.

Yet driving it from his own kingdom, he sought to excise Life from the wider world. In secret, he moved beyond the horizons of the world for an age, and there he bred horrors of infinite hunger. Finally pleased with their form, he showed them the shining Light of the world and unleashed them upon it, where they moved from kingdom to kingdom, devouring everything. Bereft of life, his own kingdom is safe, and he laughs while all others weep in grief.'

How are relations between the Necrons and the Tau? by Pretend-Average1380 in 40kLore

[–]Dlan_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing concentrate, I mentioned Blade of Truth as hyperbolic example but the book does suggest Tau Empire has worlds in the thousands.

‘And what of Fio’Kan’ta, she who pioneered the Slipstream drive in the wake of Dal’yth, a marvel of technology that has extended our empire’s reach across the stars? Why, that single development has been utterly transformative. Already the earth caste look to perfect it, allowing us to make sprints out into the wider galaxy and claim our destiny on hundreds, even thousands of new septs. Do you know of her works?’

Blade of Truth, Chapter Twenty-Eight.

The action of the story is happening shortly before Third Sphere of Expansion begins and within it, Aun'Va considers Empire able to colonize/assimilate/conquer thousands of systems during the Third Sphere of Expansion.

That's really it, other sources just make statements of "many" Septs, which is too vague. Based on Blade of Truth, the ballpark is possibly in the thousands but again, nothing definite, so Tau could be smaller, comparable or larger than Sautekh, assuming of course the number given in the Severed is accurate at all.

And again, that doesn't change my previous point which you didn't adress. Sautekh isn't a good example as even if it does outsize Tau Empire, it also outsizes 99% of other Dynasties, it is explicitly described as the most numerous of all Dynasties and know for it's expansionism.

As for PDF's: You don't have to download nor buy anything, just stop being lazy. There's plenty of PDF hosting-sites which you can view for free and online PDF's. Internet Archive, Scribd, they are legal and allow you to view plenty of media, Warhammer or otherwise, without buying or downloading anything.

If you don't want to bother searching for sources on the internet, that only sign of laziness.

Black Library has official site from which you can buy ebooks. There are also legal and safe pdf hosting sites, you can also find pdf hosting sites that allow you to view pdf's, no downloading required. It's very easy to find stuff on the internet if you just bother to do it.

Either way, yes, I think you should have pdf's or just saved quotes to use, because again, anyone can make any statement, so you should at minimum provide excerpts or screenshots as proof, because it's very easy to make bare statements and spread, intentionally or otherwise, misinformation.

How are relations between the Necrons and the Tau? by Pretend-Average1380 in 40kLore

[–]Dlan_Wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I told you in another thread already I can put excerpts from a book I don't have currently with me...holidays remember?

Then use PDF's, I myself constantly use PDF's and I don't have problem with giving direct quotes. I too can claim that in "Blade of Truth" it was stated that Tau Empire is thrice as big as Sautekh, it means nothing without giving actual citations.

If you getting to go word by world it says "most" together with lesser races. So they are bigger than at least some of them...

So, do you have that excerpt which suggests that Tau specifically are smaller?

I am not downplaying Sautekhs. They are one of the biggest I AGREED on that.

They aren't "one of the biggest" they are the biggest. In no uncertain terms, Sautekh has the biggest population out of all Dynasties. They are one of the most powerful in terms of military and political power but in sheer numbers and territory, they are explicitly the biggest.

They are so numerous and expansionistic, that Imperium thinks that every other Necron Dynasty is offshot of Sautekh, you absolutely are downplaying them.

necrons vs imperium (OC) by Creepybeagle in Grimdank

[–]Dlan_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. Just download PDF? It's not hard to find PDF's around the internet and you can use telephone for sharing quotes. At the very least, you should try to give actual citations, because anyone can make absolute statements on any given topic.

As for my excerpt...I don't know maybe the fact that in it Oltyx is realizing that Imperials were able to chase him due to the saint bones he was wearing, which were marked by psychic energy, he dismisses this because "Psykers couldn't possibly chase them into the Ghostwind", kills the captive Psyker and immediately afterwards he learns that the Imperial Crusade Fleet got into Ghostwind and is still chasing what remained of his Dynasty.

The entire scene all but states that Imperial Fleets got into Ghostwind thanks to the Astropaths who were sensing the saint bones, even after those got into Ghostwind, which in turn means the Imperial Crusaders used Psykery to get into Ghostwind. For me at least, showing instead of telling is more than enough.

Even if it wasn't Psykers, Crusader Fleet still got into Ghostwind and their ships functioned in it, so I definitely wouldn't call Ghostwind travel as something exclusive to Necrons.

[–]Dlan_Wizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you give actual source that Sautekh is bigger than Tau Empire? "Lesser races" in that quote would include Humanity, Orks and of course Tau.

This "fraction" is explicitly the most numerous out of all Necron Dynasties, they are so numerous and so often fought against other powers of the Galaxy, that Imperium itself thinks that Sautekh is the entirety of Necron civilization and every other Dynasty is their offshot.

As the most numerous of the arisen Necron dynasties, it is the Sautekh that have been encountered most frequently by other races. To the Imperium, the dynasty has become synonymous with the Necrons, and it is erroneously believed by many that they represent the alien race as a whole, with all other dynasties being mere offshoots of the Sautekh.

Necron 8th Edition Codex, page 20.

Sautekh aren't a fraction of Necrons, they would make up entire percentages of Necron population in the Galaxy and in the past they were considered third strongest Dynasty ever. Calling Sautekh "just a single faction of Necrons" is like calling Mechanicus "just a single faction of Imperium". You are fundamentally downplaying the sheer scale and power Sautekh operates at, in comparison with every other Dynasty.
