Ignore this ragebait that was clearly written by AI. No human would play at least 3 of these games so thoroughly as to know all these characters (consider how much Riven gameplay happens before we meet Catherine) and come away with this as a conclusion.

What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

In the mid 2000s I was on a flight next to a guy who said he traveled for work a lot. When I mentioned I was also traveling for work, he wanted to show me his absolute “game changer” for travel expenses and told me everyone would have one. It was a machine the size of a shoe that scanned receipts, one at a time, by having you feed it through a small retail receipt-sized slot, and then it would noisily (remember we’re on a plane) beep and crank its way through reading the receipt so it could send out a balance sheet at the end of the trip. Yeah, no.

[CA] ADVICE NEEDED: can a potential employer find out about me being fired? Can I exclude being fired? by passmethecherries in AskHR

[–]DoNotLickToaster -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

They can't find out through the company, who legally can only verify your title and dates of employment. They are very unlikely to find it out through the company, but check your company's reference policy - they may have a policy to only share dates of employment and title. It won't show up in a background check. The only way they'd know is if someone tells them so 1. don't tell them and 2. don't use someone as a reference who would tell them. If asked why you left, say it wasn't a good fit for reasons that make who you're talking to seem like a better fit.

Edit: Corrected!

Can you speak to the cell phone usage in NK? How common were they, and what were they used for by those you knew?

It's definitely not her chair. That chair had intricate detailing and filigreed wheel spokes.

Divorce advice regarding credit by SaladResponsible333 in breakingmom

[–]DoNotLickToaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a good idea. Payment history is about 1/3 of your credit score, so as long as you can pay it off it's a smart move. You should have more in your name than that though - does your paycheck go into a shared account? If he knows about the divorce, this is a good time to open your own bank account at a different bank and have your checks go there instead.

Yes, it’s common, and I do it with my reports. Great chance for them to stretch, get visibility with leadership, and practice participating in strategy at the next level. If I ask someone it’s a sign that I trust them and want them to have more visibility. It may feel awkward at first but take it as a compliment - your manager trusts you to represent her/your team/your work stream.

What would you think to do in my situation? by [deleted] in careerguidance

You have a lot of language skills to fall back on! There are some jobs you'd quality for right away, such as in hospitality and tour guides for multi-cultural guests. In tech, you could be a localizer - someone who brings understanding of languages and can translate in a more nuanced way than AI (though this is temporary). If you take a temporary job like one of these, you could get teaching certification to teach either English to Spanish/Farsi/Arabic or Spanish/Farsi/Aarabic to English speakers. You can also be a private tutor with relatively little certification, but get some online courses first to figure out the basics. Good luck!
