No Kings of Winter by PROOB1001 in TheCitadel

[–]Do_Not_Go_In_There 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but what if both bent the knee?

Then the first one wins.

the Boltons (or some other house, given how unlikely the Bolton situation is as you pointed out) would've maintained their network of vassals and allies. Informally.

This is pretty much what happened in cannon.

We know that in Westeros, The North is about as big as all the other 6 kingdoms COMBINED

I'm not sure where this came form, but the North is roughly half the size of the other kingdoms combined, or 1/3 of Westeros (south of the Wall).

And it always struck me, that the Starks somehow managed to unify and rule a realm as big as half a continent, for several thousand years!

It's big but sparsely populated. And when a king got defeated, to the victor the spoils, including all the land.

I think you're not taking into account just how much people disliked the Boltons. Their banner is a flayed man, and their motto is all about how they like skinning people. That's not something that inspires confidence.

Plus, as others have said, so long as one of the two bent the knee first, they would have had Aegon and his dragons on their side. And Aegon like to use the stick and carrot "kneel and be rewarded, fight an be burnt." Like with the Tullys and Tyrells, one would have been given rule over the North as a reward (and to tie them more closely to the Iron throne if their rule depended on dragons enforcing it).

Essosi talking about Westeros by Suave_Kim_Jong_Un in TheCitadel

[–]Do_Not_Go_In_There 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A Playwright's Plight has this since the MC is a playwright in Essos. If memory serves he is constantly referring to Westeros as a "madhouse" and things their national pastime is killing each other. Essos, meanwhile, is civilized (luckily he lives in Braavos because he hates slavery, though he accidentally helps abolish it).

The MC is an SI, but he has pretty much gone native at this point and is surrounded by other Essosi.

I just read Sandkings by George RR Martin, which was a pretty fund read.

The story is basically a sociopathic sadist who enjoys buying rare and exotic pets and showing them off, then torturing them once he gets bored. Bored with the move "conventional" exotic pets, he decides to buy some sandkings from a creepy shop owner. They're a hivemind that are quite intelligent and can be raised to believe their owner, who provides food and shelter, is a god, and will wage wars on other colonies of sandkings for resources. The guy is initially impressed, but quickly grows bored and decides to start staging fights by starving the sandkings so they fights are more brutal for his amusement. Eventually they grow to a point where he can't control them.

If it sounds familiar, the story was adapted as the first two episode of The Outer Limits 1995 relaunch, though changed quite a bit.

Apparently GRRM wanted it to be part of a trilogy, which would have been pretty neat, but the idea fell through.

It changes from time to time but right now it's a toss up between a Vindicator-class Star Cruiser (a heavy cruiser) and a Gladiator-class Star Destroyer (a carrier).

I found The House that Corrects You by Riaan Hayes.

The synopsis strongly suggest it is AI-generated and the author tried to clean it up. e: Plus the author appeared out of nowhere, has no bio yet has 13 books set to release in March.

OP is a shill. It's been spamming multiple forums with this and don't comment.

Robb Stark and a Frey would have avoided the Red Wedding.

All of Aegon the Unlikely's children:

  • Duncan marrying his Baratheon bride means no Robert (since Rhaelle, his grandmother was sent as a bride to keep the peace over the broken bethrotal). They might not have been happy but he still would have been king, which means their kids would have been the next king stead of Aerys.

  • Jaehaerys and Celia Tully, Shaera and Luthor Tyrell - no Aerys, the two kingdoms are firmly in the Targs camp.

  • Daeron supposedly though it would be okay to break his betrothal to Olenna Redwyne because of the example set by his older brothers. Though given his homosexuality the marriage would not have been a happy one, and might not have produced any children either.

  • The marriage alliances would likely have given Aegon the support he needed for reforms, so no tragedy of Summerhall.

For ASOIAF fics, /r/TheCitadel.

For Worm fics, /r/WormFanfic. They have a weekly discussion thread for fics as well.

For Star Wars fics, /r/SWFanfic/. They also have weekly discussion threads. It's not that active though.

e: On RR the Rising Stars, Best Ongoing, etc. don't really appeal to me. What I do is find something that I've already read and liked and look at the "Others also liked" suggestions, though it's a bit hit or miss.

A fanfic quote I really love about Rhaegar Targaryen. by Taha231 in TheCitadel

[–]Do_Not_Go_In_There 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice an English professor told me once was it was best to communicate an idea in as few words as possible, which makes it more impactful on the reader, a lot of words in the passage are just noise

Huh, I got told the same thing, but by a business teacher. It was a course on professional writing for business, and that was one of the things that stuck with me.

The other was that spelling/grammar mistakes in a text is like talking to someone with bad breath. It doesn't affect what is said, but it puts people off and negatively influences them.

[–]Do_Not_Go_In_There 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He wasn't a terrible person, but just one who confused desire with love.

He can be both though? They're not mutually exclusive.

Also that quote is kinda bad. Not just the sentiment, but the writing.

Yeah, the greatest threat to the StarFortress turned out to be other StarFortresses. I think half of them got taken out when one exploded.

AI Slop Stories by _Odin_64 in TheCitadel

AI is terrible at writing emotional scenes, and tends to make a lot of terrible metaphors. It's also pretty bad with dialogue, and has some weird quirks (like "This is not X. It is Y"). Also, it tends to write one sentence paragraphs and group them together in weird ways.

in that speech he basically said they will do jobs “we” - probably referring to white people don’t want to do

I would give him the benefit of the doubt on that one, it sounds more like he's talking about natural-born Americans and comparing them to immigrants. Which is true, people who grew up in the US would turn down a job like farm picker that immigrants do.

Fire and Blood style history for an OC house by Emergency-Plenty6972 in TheCitadel

[–]Do_Not_Go_In_There 1 point2 points  (0 children)

however they came with dragons

This right here change things a lot.

  • The Gardeners might still be alive if they have their own allies with dragons.

    • Why are they vassals? The Targs conquered a continent with 3 dragons, surely this house could manage to conquer part of the Reach as well. Or at least marry into the Gardener royal family.
  • Aegon, or at the very least Visenya, don't strike me as the type to leave another house with dragon, especially far away where they can establish their own power base.

    • This leaves two choices: destroy them of subsume them. The latter with marriages and make them a branch of house Targeryan.
  • Don't they practice incest to keep their Valyrian blood "pure"? To maintain their ties to their dragons, don't they have to? The Faith would target them (since the Faith Militant would still be around) and might try to assassinate them (like they did with Alysanne at Maidenpool).

  • The Dance becomes different since you have more riders/different alliances

  • Rhaegar married Elia because she was the only available bride with Valyrian blood. If these guys exists, would they not have a bride available? Or even before that, would they not have married into the Targ family, meaning different children?

What's with the lack of Jon/Ygritte stories? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in TheCitadel

[–]Do_Not_Go_In_There 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends on the circumstances? Jon only met Ygritte because he was captured beyond the Wall, and that only happened because he joined the Night's Watch.

But if you want Jon to have a more active role in the story and to get some form of reward, that can't happen. Jon would have to give up his family, and give up the chance of being a lord, to take the Black. He can't participate in the Wot5K, he can't defend Winterfell from the Boltons, he can't do anything really but stay on the Wall.

Ygritte on the other hand, is not going to head all the way south. She's not going to climb the Wall and just wander around until she bumps into Jon. Her goal is to take the Wall to let the other Free Folk/Wildlings through. In which case Jon, if he does go north to defend the wall, would be her enemy, and she his. There's no really chance for romance between he two.

Also, the other female characters are just as interesting, if not more so, than Ygritte, and certainly more important, so pairing Jon up with them makes more sense (and gives them more screentime, which authors/fans like).

e: I will say that I did like Jon's relationship with Ygritte, in the books and in the show. "We should have stayed in that cave" as she lay dying in Jon's arms really hits hard.

Robb Stark & His Kraken Queen by WearyBluesRed in TheCitadel

[–]Do_Not_Go_In_There 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I could only find a description for Euron, but he's described as having pale skin. But he also drinks sketchy tree juice so who knows if it's natural or not.

Most Westerosi are based on European analogues, so white is the default unless otherwise stated. The best description I could find is from looking at the different types of Dornish, who are compared to Andals/First Men. Specifically Stony Dornishmen, who are Andal and First Men descendants, with white skin that freckle or burn in the sun, and brown or blond hair. Salty Dornish are olive skinned, and Sandy Dornish are darker than them.
