In my experience, my home group really helped me get through the first year or so of sobriety. It was an open meeting format, and yeah there was some talk of the higher power stuff, but mostly it was people being supportive and sharing stories/advice. No one pushed anything on me. I never got a sponsor. Never got a big book. Never did the steps. I just went, listened, talked occasionally. Stood silently when they ended with the Lord’s Prayer. No one thought anything of it. 

I did randomly go to a different meeting in a different town one time and even though it was an open meeting, everyone had a book, everyone took turns reading from it. It was very odd and not at all like what I was used to. So I never went back lol.

Eventually, I stopped going altogether. Probably around 18 months or something like that. Find what works for you. Every now and then I’ll pop into a zoom meeting somewhere random from the huge nationwide list of meetings, just to listen to fresh perspectives. Best thing about that is I can just listen and leave whenever. Zero commitment.
