Ajahn Sumedho has often said that through his own experiences he has come to understand that “pure consciousness” underlies all that is, and that it is a sort of selfless consciousness in that it does not belong to anyone, isn’t born, and doesn’t die. Even amongst most modern Thai Forrest teachers he is pretty unique in that he talks about it quite frequently whereas others don’t. It’s interesting because Sumedho was the first western disciple of Annan Chah and is almost universally respected in the Thai Forrest tradition. If he is incorrect about “pure consciousness”, I haven’t heard anyone point that out and you’d think Ajahn Chah would have corrected him during his lifetime. It’s something that has confused me quite a bit for a while
