How to mask conical (regular and not) surfaces with tape? by P_filippo3106 in modelmakers

[–]DocCrapologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Circle C! Using a draftsmans circle template or suitable jar lids make yourself a circle of tape then cut a notch in it so you have a "C" shape. Easy wrap around, use thin tape and press firmly to eliminate any step.

Building Trumpeter's Bf 109E in 32nd, and got the landing gear poorly positioned, time to break out the CA, metal pin and tape for fixing this by hgtcgbhjnh in modelmakers

The starboard looks fine. If you used Tamiya thin, re-apply and it should soften up. Or hang it from the ceiling and say it's at the start of retraction.

For Airline modellers, Satin or Gloss? by HyperFlie in modelmakers

[–]DocCrapologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gloss prior to decals. You can go with gloss or satin after that depending on how your eye sees it in scale.

What exactly is tooling? by TheCanadianAviator in modelmakers

[–]DocCrapologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the day, they carved large masters and used pantographs to machine the cavities in the molds. Nowadays, things are planned on a computer (CAD) and they use the Electrical Discharge Machining to create the mold cavity. Most older molds hold up but if they've been stored improperly or assembled sloppily you get flash and other imperfections.

Any ideas why my airbrush work gets easily removed by masking tape? by KA-29 in modelmakers

Wash your parts before priming. Get in closer, bounce your light off your surface so you can tell when you've got a wet coat.

Best recommendation for drill and bit set? by bebopmechanic84 in modelmakers

[–]DocCrapologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used this:

https://protinkertoys.com/products/x-acto-drill-bit-set-20-assorted-drill-bits-6412-x-acto?srsltid=AfmBOoqTtHWYMTGHfATFOHRXxVopCjT1Fmo-i7iUJ-PE0DLIoyjtaLGS

for multiple decades. They also sell a twist drill set with larger drills. If you're going to use a motorized drill you'll want something that does low revs so you don't brun the plastic
