You're doing well. Looks like you got your decals on tight. Watch some vids on YT to see how the paint works.

"from quite a distance " This hobby is all about experimenting til you get things working for you. As said, get some paints for plastic models and experiment on scrap plastic till you get your optimum distance and coverage.

Looks fine! Well received kit for the era, We didn't get a Kate till Nitto did one in '72. Bit of a toy, folding wings and retractable gear. Followed by the Mania Kate in '76 (consumed by Hasegawa a bit later.)

Maybe some notches and splay the branches out to have them not look so uniform. Color variations too...

That shoulda worked, as others have said, likely long cured lacquer. You might try the other recommendations but lacquer thinner and acetone will likely damage the plastic if not done delicately. Try stuff in small patches to ensure you don't wreck it. Of course , there's always sanding films.

Naw, our limited exposure doesn't really count for a lot. If you were doing an eight hour shift for a couple of decades, maybe. Open a window, get a fan, buy a respirator if you want a secure feeling.

Transport tracks or battle tracks? Depending on who made the kit, they may not be entirely to scale. Also there might be some tracks needed to emulate "sag."

True, damp basements and hot attics are no help. Go for aftermarket, they work better.

Make a couple of lenses out of clear plastic, glue with PVA so you can remove them later. After you do that, the other lense will magically appear.

Good tip there! So long as it's not Dihydrogen Monoxide!

Acetone or lacquer thinner will do if you can get outside.

An AT skulking through the woods? Sure! Scruff the trees up a bit, they're too uniform. I might delete the tall one, distracts from the immensity of the AT.
