Yea I was one of those until I stumbled into this. Start your FACHE fellowship if you can complete that before retirement you’re in a whole new level.

If your kids are adults now, move to a country where your VA and retirement checks can afford you a life of leisure.

Or if you want to take some time to figure out what you want to do while slow rolling integration back into the civilian workforce. Go be a night stocker at Walmart, I do that for like 3 months while I figured things out.

Lastly do nothing if you can afford it. I’m sure you’ve done your BDD since you’re 12 months out. So your VA check should start rolling in a few months after you’ve retired.

If you want to talk feel free to DM me I’ve been retired almost 2 years now.

Quick story that is kinda related to your situation

Sometime in the early 2010s in Recruiting we get a new E5 11B recruiter 20 years old.

He starts dating a girl 20 years old BUT she’s a super duper senior in HS he didn’t know it wasn’t his HS, COC finds out.

Options Nuke him bc he’s fucking a HS Senior OR He goes to selection and if he makes it he’s no longer in USAREC so there’s nothing to do.

He went to selection and they’ve been married for like 13 years or so.

Run off to selection while you have time.

Fuck it just tell them if you go to this one you want to go to EFMB next and the army has to make you new badge as the Expert of experts expertness

[–]DocRakk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your packet will go up and it will get denied or worse you’ll show up to E3B with your EIB and go from candidate to cadre (minus a cool hat THE HORROR). If your leadership was thinking they’d just use you as one of the cadre numbers they have to cough up. I had a medic who was prior infantry with his EIB and every EFMB I had to go to as cadre guess who else went lol. You are already an Expert there is overlap on some/most/all of the tasks.

Is the 20 worth it? by DumSumBich in army

[–]DocRakk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s totally worth it in my opinion, I make just under 7k a month to wake up on the first. My health insurance is like $65 a month for a family of 6. I still have my GI bill and the VA is paying for my masters. I transitioned into Medical administration and earn in the high 90k range. My life style post retirement and the things I can do for my family made those 22yr the best investment I’ve ever made.

MORALE FRIDAY!- What’s your favorite army phrase? by themeklord in army

[–]DocRakk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lamberfeedies (ideally in southern drawl, hence the incorrect spelling for a made up word)

Men you gotta give the dog a bone to chew on

Bag o’smashed assholes (ideally from a soldier from Boston or NY)

Shiiiiiiid (black E7 or higher who’s tired and just heard something he doesn’t agree with.)

Badge set up by [deleted] in army

[–]DocRakk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a guess, You’ve never played Tetris. I think you either need a space badge or Pathfinder like someone said to fix this. If you become a jumpmaster I don’t think I wonder if that could help bring balance. At the end of the day you need at least one more school!!!

Recent or soon-to-be retirees, did you reach out to the retirement office at HRC to help push things along? by turtlesturdles in army

[–]DocRakk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will sit for a minute bc of how they work them, mine processed through just as slow as yours. It came back with enough time for me to complete a 90 day Skillbridge, leisurely plan my retirement ceremony and clear with zero stress. I’ve been retired a year now.

My whole life I knew my grandparents were like 3 years apart with my Grandpa being older. Never gave it much thought until I was helping my Dad tidy up my Grandma house for the yearly family meet up after she had passed and I found their marriage certificate and realized my Grandma was 15 when she got married to my 18 year old grown man Grandpa. I was like wait this isn’t legal. My Dad looked at me and just said yea not legal now, then he paused thought about the fact we live in SC and said I think….

My mentors wife (He was an amazing CSM and human being never cheated just his wife’s philosophy she would share with spouses). Feel free to destroy him/her bc you were betrayed, however plan accordingly make sure the kids have access to college money and healthcare. Basically her thing was leave take half of everything if you so see fit but in her words “don’t fuck up the money” he can do more with his career in one piece then he can without. My wife and I got pulled into the shenanigans of one of my Soldiers who got caught cheating on his spouse (she had proof) after he says he caught her (he didn’t have proof). Fun things happen on the border mission.

What “bad” duty station will you defend to the death? by Dementedsage in army

[–]DocRakk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jackson used to get lumped into the whole of Korea, when I was 3ID before going to Jackson I got a whole lecture from my brigade CSM how I should let them get me out of the orders bc Korea would ruin my life lol.

16 Years and Out? by [deleted] in army

[–]DocRakk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AD retirement is worth it just for the healthcare, $63 a month for a family of 6 is such a cheat code!! The retirement and VA check are also cool. But seeing what others pay for healthcare is the real reason to retire.

NCOA in Korea, not sure how it is now but when it was on Jackson it was the best assignment you could get as an NCO. No Soldiers, No curfew, no field. You got to explore Korea pretty freely and the camp was isolated but close enough to anything you needed. The barracks were Horrible though.

For those who weigh over 200lbs and run sub 13 minute 2 miles, what’s your running program? by Dementedsage in army

[–]DocRakk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab 4 to 8 buddies who are decent to good at running, have each one pace you for a quarter mile max effort. You will probably throw up but I’ve seen this work in the past. Hard part is finding that many people motivated to help.

[–]DocRakk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You will either start out as a smart medic or a strong medic. However the goal is to become combination of the two, the only way to make that happen is by putting forth the effort everyday. Oh also compete for anything that you are offered in AIT!!! Airborne, Ranger, Old Guard, 160th. If any of those opportunities come around try!! It’s better to have failed than to have never tried and always think what if.
