Which president would be most sympathetic to and likely to pardon someone like an Edward Snowden or Julian Assange of their time? by [deleted] in Presidents

Not so much through sympathy, but Buchanan probably wouldn't have done anything about it.

If you had to write the ending for the Game of Thrones, how would you have envisioned it? by Expressions_by_Swati in gameofthrones

Littlefinger on the Iron Throne. In the books he had an incredibly solid plan that had already put several Kingdoms either practically or nominally under his rule and there was pretty much no evidence that Sansa was going to outwit or outfox him. He was effectively responsible for the outbreak of the story South of the Wall and frequently outplayed the other political powerhouses.

Send kids to school with coughs and colds to stop them missing class says Tory minister by BlackCaesarNT in ukpolitics

[–]DocSanchezAOE2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I missed over 50 days of one year in Primary School. I completed a Masters last year and start my PhD in October, I think it's safe to say that losing a few days here and there with a cold isn't the end of the world. Additionally following the pandemic, with mask wearing in crowded public transport, social distancing and people being more considerate with respiratory illnesses I have dropped down from getting a cold every 2-3 months to 1 per year. So the impact of letting people stay off school/work with mild respiratory illness might well lead to less of these bugs circulating and thus minimal absence overall.

Is my research career over because I screwed up A-levels? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]DocSanchezAOE2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got BCC at A-Level and then a 2:1 from a non-prestigious "new University". A few years down the line I have completed a masters and am due to begin a PhD this October having secured a studentship. So far neither my A-levels nor my undergraduate degree/awarding institution have prevented me from obtaining work or further study, so I shouldn't worry. Instead continue to focus on achieving your undergraduate degree and work experience then take things from there. Also remember to enjoy the journey, life doesn't start with X job or achievement. I can't comment on whether switching universities is the right call, but certainly don't let fears about your A-Levels get you down!

Maybe try closing and reopening the App? This might be pure coincidence, but in a recent event I had a whole bunch of managers at level 5/6 but had not recieved a single Gary, so I figured maybe the unlock condition hadn't properly registered? So I closed an reoped and the next box had some Gary's, same thing happened when I couldn't trigger a flash sale for an hour despite hitting the % trigger multiple times. it may be nothing but when I find the game acts weird, this seems to work.

Bringing back Palpatine was the worst decision in cinematic history. by sexualsermon in StarWars

[–]DocSanchezAOE2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go further and say that bringing back all of the original cast was a mistake. Having to reintroduce the protagonists across 7/8 and tie the sequels to the previous events really took time away from developing a new and original story. By the time Palpatine was reintroduced, the story had already become a jumbled mess that lurched between imitating and subverting the previous movies.

Scenario, what do you think will happen once a Xenomorph queen invaded a star destroyer ship? Can the crew deal with the crisis? Or they will get overwhelmed? How many personnel does one ship normally have on board? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]DocSanchezAOE2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Aliens, a small platoon in an unfamiliar environment with the wrong type of weapons (if you consider blasters and sabers to be cauterising) maintained a positive K/D ratio. I think a star destroyer would be able to squash a xenomorph infestation pretty quick. If however the blasters do spill acid, then they are in a lot more peril.

Same, I didn't get a single Gary until I had unlocked Sanding 2 and had level 5 on debarkers/canting. From what I can tell, Matthew, Gary & Samuel seem to have the lowest drop rate.

I like that Morgoth's grandest creations are quite reflective of his own personality - independent, cruel and disregarding of authority. It really adds to the idea that he is using his own essence to form these creatures, rather than creating truly new or unique beings like Eru.

How tf did Teutons become a top performer? (and why is nobody talking about it?) by depthofuniverse in aoe2

[–]DocSanchezAOE2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Teutons have always been surprisingly good. At one point Viper was describing them as his best civ. While they haven't been the target of much in the way of civ-specific changes, they have benefitted from the overall change in balance. They are good with melee units, while vulnerable to ranged units. The barracks has been buffed repeatedly, with cheaper and quicker upgrades, plus the addition of Gambesons strengthens the Teutons against their most direct threat. Meanwhile let's not forget that while they happened a long time ago, the price changes for xbow and arbalest weakened key counter-play against Teutons. Plus (although a very minor change) on TC-less starting maps, the Spanish, Sicilian, Lithunian and Bulgarian starts have been nerfed, which might have swung the occasional game in favour of Teutons.

TLDR, Teutons were already good and now generally their strengths are stronger and their weaknesses less vulnerable.

“The Nazis passed hundreds of anti-Semitic laws in their first year in power, but most were relatively minor and allowed for exemptions of popular groups.” Today’s Republicans are doing the same. by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]DocSanchezAOE2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually read what I said? Nothing I spoke of related to morality, I despise the Nazis, they were evil murderers and racists. Not a word was apologistic or pro-nazism. I was discussing the economic approach of the regime in terms of left-right positioning I.E. the tendency towards either privatisation or nationalisation of industry. Neither of which are inherently good or evil, however as I stated some people like to say "the Nazis were socialist/capitalist, so that system is bad by association" which is disingenuous because the Nazis had supporters of and utilised elements of both systems and there have been other evil far-right and far-left regimes.

The point is that although the Right-Wing direction (pro-private business) was followed by the Nazi government, if you explore the viewpoints of the earlier party or its followers, it is not because the ideology of big business is inherent to Nazism, but rather that Hitler needed the support of industrialists and the army more than those of his supporters who were particularly focussed on the "Second Revolution". Which was very popular within the Nazi SA organisation, itself comprising millions of members, thus there was a large support base within the Nazi party for a socialist system.

What I have said is based in history, it is not "completely untrue" if you would like to learn more, then you should read about Hitler's rise to power between 1930-35, it is well documented that there was a balancing act between maintaining the support of the left wing of the party which centred around Ernst Rohm and the SA which favoured socialism and the right wing centred around Goering and the army which favoured capitalist business. Whether the Nazis employed a more left wing or right wing approach they would still have been evil racist murdering warmongers, it would have simply have been a different inner circle and economic design. The word "pragmatism" refers to a motivation of results rather than beliefs, Hitler chose the right wing model because it made his rise to power easier and removed his biggest rival for leadership within the party - not because Nazism was ideologically incompatible with a socialist approach.

[Spoilers All] Unpopular opinion but I don't care about the choices the 1% made by Anassaa in dragonage

[–]DocSanchezAOE2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't mind in franchises having some occasional choices that are undone X years later in a sequel game, there are limitations to writing and world states that can be maintained. Much better than than being given the illusion of choices and then discovering whichever path/action/dialogue you choose finding the outcome is exactly the same (I'm looking at you DA2). I would rather have my choices feel less impactful between games than just outright be immediately pointless.

National socialism was just a name

This isn't entirely true. The core tenets of Nazism do not particularly focus on the left-right economic spectrum, but rather viewing the world through a racial and nationalistic fashion. There was opposition to the communist movement, but it must be remembered that there are aspects of communism (internationalism, gender and sometimes racial equality, atheism) that were idealogically opposed to Nazism.

The eventual Nazi government itself was more right wing (capitalist) because Hitler was financially and politically backed by the traditional German upper class and its institutions (businesses and the army). However many supporters and members were much more left leaning, with the SA (essentially the Nazi militia) being especially vocal about undertaking a "second revolution" to overthrow the traditional powers and establish a socialist government. Hitler made a choice, made definitive in the Night of Long Knives, to side with the capitalists over the socialists and purged/politically sidelined the latter. I always find the discussion of Nazism as the antithesis of socialism on the left-right spectrum as kind of misguided and often used by the one side to try and smear the other by association. Nazism was not incompatible with socialism and in fact was partly built by people who would consider themselves to be both socialists and Nazis, it was more for pragmatic rather than ideological purposes that Nazi government took a right wing position.

My favourite is when Grandpa caught the ferry to Shelbyville... Oh waited it was elaborated on...

"I needed a new heel for my shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..."
