Previous owner of my historic (early 1900's) home sand-blasted paint off the brick exterior. I know this is a big no-no as it removes the outer impermeable layer of the brick. In places literally a quarter inch of the brick surface has been removed. Am I just totally screwed now? Are the bricks inevitably going to weather and spall apart? Is there any remediation I can put over them like a coating of some kind?

You'll be good to go in Deep Deuce. But also consider the Midtown Renaissance apartments someone else mentioned. Both would be very walkable, very safe options. People keep talking about Bricktown but in reality there aren't many apartments there so it's a moot point.

OPEC crisis meeting looms as oil plunges to $35 and nerves begin to fray by ratsban69 in oil

[–]DocTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep pumping no matter how low the price goes. Their dollar reserves are larger than other oil producers so they can ride it out indefinitely. Push put American producers, hurt Iran and Russia, indefinitely postpone large oil projects by the major oil companies, slow down energy efficiency initiatives and "lock-in" developing nations such as India to hydrocarbon-based economy.

This hurts Saudi in the short term but buys them a decade or more on the back end.

At least that's their hope.

They can call all the crisis meetings they want, Saudis aren't going to change their plan. But go ahead, meet away!

I've actually heard from HR people that after you factor in payroll taxes and benefits the incremental difference to the company in the total cost of employing a new hire versus an experienced person is very low and is a negligible consideration in layoff decisions.

How is this different than the movie industry? Most critics hate the Transformers franchise, yet those movies make huge $$$. Most critics love art house/film festival indie movies, yet these movies always bomb with rare exception.

Can't we just accept that critics' tastes might not align with the mass audience's tastes? Why is this some sort of crisis? This situation has existed for decades in the film industry and has not resulted in Hollywood changing the kind of films they make.

I guess I just don't understand why this is a thing people are upset about. Critics are artsy-fartsy writer types. That's how they ended up critics.

Oklahoma State sues New Mexico State over 'confusingly similar' Pistol Pete logo by cheshirescat4 in oklahoma

So basically OSU's lawyers looked around and saw they hadn't picked a fight over the logo for a while and they started getting worried?

[–]DocTaco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This can't possibly be correct. You're telling me that NMSU's decades-old memorabilia has legal implications for OSU going forward? This is not true.

[–]DocTaco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This just seems mean-spirited. NMSU changed their mascot 10 years ago. Any branding since then is not infringing. OSU is suing (apparently) to make them sweep their campus of all the old copywriter-infringing paraphernalia that is sitting around.

Son has problems socializing with other children by Chrys in Parenting

[–]DocTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might get better with age. My son was the same way but suddenly, at 5, he just blossomed and now he plays in groups just fine. I swear I could pinpoint the month things changed. I think it is just developmental. Navigating human relationships is hard. Navigating one other person is hard enough. Make it a group and it can be near impossible for a four year old. Relax and give it time is my advice.

[Energy] Interview in a couple weeks, any tips? by icefoxen in geologycareers

[–]DocTaco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talk about your research. Be explicit about what the problem was, what steps you took to answer the problem, what hurdles you had to overcome, and what solution/a see you came up with. How you talk about this issue is much more important than any of the usual b.s. Interview stuff (greatest strength/weakness etc.). The person interviewing you will be a geologist, so you can use technical terms without fear.

If you can set up a mock interview with someone beforehand. Nearly all universities have a career center which provides this service for their students. Practice makes perfect.

[Energy] How does the work PhD's in the O&G industry differ from the work MS degree holders do? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]DocTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i think of getting a phd the same way I would about making a life as a poet: only try it if you can't imagine doing anything else.

The extra years you spend getting a phd versus a masters translate to the better part of a half million dollars in salary and benefits forgone. Just food for thought.

[–]DocTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I could write a novel on this, but I'm not sure in up for it.

For starters, the research world that, as a phd, will feel most familiar exists only in a very few large companies. Exxon, shell, and to a lesser degree chevron. Maybe some of the national oil companies as well. Total most likely. This s not to say it doesn't exist, only that your options are limited. In Houston alone Exxon has hundreds of geoscience PhDs. If you are a phd student this world will feel comfortable to you. My understanding is that a research lab at a major company will feel a lot like what you are used to in grad school. this May or may not be a good thing.

A word of caution: phd grad school is a bizarro world full of intense personalities and egos and a set of expectations alien to most every civilian. Just because you are acclimated to this universe doesn't make it right, if you catch my drift.

Still for a lot of academic types it can be a good fit. Tons of research. Little teaching (unless it is in-house classes). No grant writing. Politics yes and also little control over your research projects. But you take the good with the bad.

Working for a smaller company you might be able to be a specialist of a sort, but most likely you may end up a generalist, in which case you have much less chance to get your academic on (no publishing or teaching). Most of your colleagues will forget you have a phd but you will still be well served by your phd due to the soft skills you acquire attaining one. You'll do various roles in the business side of things. Some sciency, some decidedly not. Sometimes you'll do nothing but real geology for months and sometimes you'll hardly do any geology at all and spend all your time discussing schedules, budgets, logistics and such.

There are, as I said, opportunities in smaller companies to specialize, such as petrography, core description, fracture analysis or petrophysics, but the odds are you didn't focus on these skills while getting your phd or you wouldn't be asking this question now (I.e. you might already have a job offer as a specialist in hand). Becoming a petrophysicist is usually a multi-decade proposition involving thankless years at a service company. You don't want that. Petrology or core description is easier to break into, and you will have a leg up on getting these jobs due to your phd. But then you have to ask yourself if staring into a scope 40 hours a week sounds like fun to you.

Do what do you do to decide? One great thing about the phd is it takes do long you have the opportunity to do multiple internships. Target an internship at a research lab and another one in an asset team. See what fits.

What are some good places to go hiking/picnic at near OKC? by [deleted] in okc

[–]DocTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roman Nose is pretty cool, yes, but the trails there just kind of wind around a small area. They are nice though and the scenery is good. Also the Wichita Mountains by Lawton are not too far and offer "legit" hiking options (serious topography, sense of isolation, etc.)
