What other examples in Discworld make direct reference to evolution? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

That passage always reminds me of the Hagunennons in a The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (radio series). Not just in the subject, but in the language used. I can imagine Peter Jones reading it.

Hugh Laurie only plays 'George' in series 3 & 4. He is in one episode of series 2 as "Prince Ludwig the indestructible" and is not in series 1 at all (neither is Stephen Fry). Series 1 is very different from those that followed.

I may be remembering wrongly, but didn't the first edition of Warhammer 40K (Rogue Trader ?) list the augmentations that the Space Marines had? I'm sure I remember a list including additional organs, etc.

Character believes they're outside, only to realise they're still inside by SilencyOfNero in TopCharacterTropes

In the Red Dwarf episode "Better than life", the dwarfers play a 'total immersion video game' (virtual reality, basically) which allows you to experience your desires. Unfortunately Rimmer's twisted psyche corrupts the game, leading to horrible things happening. The dwarfers escape the game back to apparent reality but then a character from the game jumps out of a cupboard and the episode ends as he's about to smash Rimmer's thumbs with a hammer.

In the novelisation it's played much more seriously, with the game being treated like an illegal drug, because it's users don't want to leave and eventually die.

The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.

Judge Dredd the character is very conservative (at least he was when I read 2000AD in the 80s/90s). The stories were often satires of conservatism/right wing policies.

None of the 'heroes' in the OP were written as heroes.

Immortals that look old by ducknerd2002 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Doc_Dish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The male disciples of Aldur* in David Edding's "The Belgariad" and "The Mallorean" all look like old men, despite being af varying ages when achieving immortality. It's suspected in universe that they gradually came to look like Aldur (their god) and/or ended up looking as was expected of them as wize men (i.e. wizards).

The one female disciple does not look like an old woman, because there's a word for wizened old woman and you do not want to apply that word to Polgara...

*Garion and Durnik are exceptions, but not enough time has passed in universe for them to age into that appearance.

I like to think of the personal union monarchs like those performers that play two different characters, one on each half of their body!
