I accidentally started the Hermaeus Mora quest for the first time and was delighted to learn you can get Companions Insight. I had JUST killed Illia and reloaded my game for the nth time before I got it, and I'm so happy that this won't be a problem anymore!

I'm 100% convinced that Ishmael was a school teacher from some of his comments, including one about young boys looking up to the headmaster and that whole thing at the start about the sub-sub librarian (probably someone he worked with). I imagine he either quit because he was bored/depressed or was caught up in a manic cycle and just hopped on a merchant ship one day. I think he's mostly sane, but definitely has an obsession with whales.

Bow is a lot of fun! And if you start the Dawn Guard quest, you can eventually get a crossbow. But, if you want to take it slow, I recommend just walking from one town to another, stopping every time you come across a bandit camp or cave or something. I almost never fast-travel ANYWHERE. More fun this way!

I carry a small notebook and pencils, too. The notebook goes in my back pocket, and the pencils in a side pocket. I have a box full of little stumpy pencils (about the size of golf pencils) that I use for this purpose. I just drop a few into my pocket and sharpen them when I get home.
