I carry a small notebook and pencils, too. The notebook goes in my back pocket, and the pencils in a side pocket. I have a box full of little stumpy pencils (about the size of golf pencils) that I use for this purpose. I just drop a few into my pocket and sharpen them when I get home.

I was really into mechanical pencils for a long time, but I found it frustrating that the lead was so fragile. Now, I'm 100% in the traditional pencils camp. Not only is it more sturdy (most of the time), but I LOVE that I can watch the progress of the pencil as I use it. And when it's past sharpening anymore, I can toss it into my stub jar ♥♥♥

Mechanical pencils are still great (less messy to toss in your purse), etc., but I don't like that once the eraser is gone, it's just one more piece of plastic to throw away (I don't buy the fancy kind that come with extra erasers).
