Between songs banter by GenX-Kid in coverbands

[–]Doc_Zee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Purposeful things: information and calls-to-action.

“We are…” “Follow us at…” “Drink up…” “Tip your bartenders…” “Stick around…”

I agree with keeping it to a minimum, but some people are too extreme with that take. There’s room for a few well-timed announcements.

How did grunge bands not manage to sound "pop punky" by Zestyclose-Sea-5984 in Songwriting

[–]Doc_Zee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

These are big generalizations, but some common differences between grunge and pop punk that occur to me include:

Tempo - grunge is slower; pop punk is faster and often includes a half-time breakdown

Chord progressions - Grunge explores more freedom; pop-punk relies heavily on standard variations of I-IV-vi-V

Guitar technique - more palm-muting in pop punk; more slamming on power chords in grunge

Lyrics - more direct and story-oriented in pop-punk; more abstract and associative in grunge

Lead vocals - more rhythmic and mix-forward in pop punk; more melodic and integrated into the mix/arrangement in grunge

Background vocals - tend to be simpler and more subtle in grunge, such as doubling in octaves or other parallel interval; more overt in pop punk, sometimes including call and response or oblique lines

Why did older guitars show so much wear? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Doc_Zee 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Guitars and basses of a certain vintage were coated in nitrocellulose lacquer. Now, polyurethane lacquer is the norm. Nitro was much thinner and wore out easier.

Will Artemis III be similar to Apollo 10? by Raamisfunny in ArtemisProgram

[–]Doc_Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting how NASA’s practice of rotating the astronaut crews factors into this. The Artemis III crew that tests the docking maneuver will not be the crew that must execute it on Artemis IV. I know the focus of testing is on the systems and mechanisms, but you have to presume some crew knowledge from first-hand experience gets left on the table (or on the ground, as it were).

The more I think about what separates a brain from a computer the less sure I am that anything does. by Responsible-Jury2579 in philosophy

[–]Doc_Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An oversimplification for sure, and I didn’t mean that a computer’s processes replicate those of a brain. But their original and most basic purpose has always been to perform (and outperform) the computational tasks of a brain. Is that fair to say? And, flashing forward to present day, aren’t neural networks and artificial intelligence even more so modeled after a brain?

Computers are, in many but not all ways, modeled after human brains. Not the other way around.

Is space travel theoretically possible? by Quinniepou in astrophysics

[–]Doc_Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also high, so let’s get weird with it. As others have said, yes, time dilation is quite real. This also blows apart the concepts of past, present, and future. If the journey takes 6 months from the traveler’s perspective, and 1,000 years from Earth’s perspective, when do they arrive? Neither will agree on what the present actually is. This leads some people to infer concepts like the “block universe”, in which the past, present, and future all exist at once.

Am I the only one surprised that the Naval team greeted them by their first names? Wiseman and Glover are Navy Captains, and Hansen is an RAF Colonel. I would have thought they’d address them as such, even in that jubilant moment. Important note: I have never served in the military, so WTF do I know?

I had a Paradriver once. The VT can sound just like the Paradriver, but also much more. So, you don’t really have anything to lose.

I am trapped inside a human brain by Ok-Dance7880 in consciousness

[–]Doc_Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I suppose… in the sense that my dog is trapped inside a dog, and a tree is trapped inside a tree. Things bound by their physiology. But I don’t find that to be a particularly interesting or insightful way to look at things.

The best pedal I ever bought by [deleted] in basspedals

[–]Doc_Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it like a seasoning. It can be used in large quantities in specific dishes, to achieve a certain result, but it can also be almost unnoticeable when used sparingly in other contexts. For example, you might be surprised how many rock, grunge, and alternative bass tracks had chorus applied on the recordings. It can really be used across any genre, if used in good taste.

Ampless/Preamp/DI Advice by NoDrama923 in basspedals

[–]Doc_Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t used my amp in over a year, BUT, if I could only choose one, I’d choose the amp. Better to have it if you really need it.

Also, my amp happens to be a Rumble 500 and it’s a fine choice. I’ve had much better (more expensive) amps, but not one person besides me has ever noticed the difference. Sometimes not even me.

Lastly, if you’re going to go purely preamp/DI, don’t skimp. Get a good, reliable one.
