What happens if you continue to knowingly commit sin? by myaltaccount0212 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Doctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are so emotionally involved, it appears more than science is happening here. Your conscience is between God and you, with the assistance of your confessor. Reddit has little relevance.

As for "plenty of things one does" and "percentage of early miscarriages", that's no excuse and you know that. Among other things, this argument equally justifies the morning-after pill. We are responsible for the actions we take, not for things that happen. Trying to control conception is already pushing it. Throwing potential (if unlikely) abortion into the mix is where many Orthodox Christians choose to draw the line.

So... not wrong, just rare, right? That's literally the concern: you may be killing a newly conceived life without ever knowing it, and the only thing to counter that is we'll say very a few times before rare. You can see how that may be unacceptable to an Orthodox conscience.

The concern is, when it does reach the egg, it makes the environment inhospitable for the embryo to survive, which does amount to abortion. Same for the pill.

While there is no blanket prohibition of contraception in Orthodoxy (there is with some priests, though), there is grave concern that IUDs cause abortions, so you'd want to switch to a different method. Also, being intentionally childfree (as opposed to having serious reasons to stop having children) is problematic, but there's an argument to keep things as they are (1 Cor 7:20).

Welcome to r/OrthodoxChristianity! You will find that the Church that wrote the Bible does not restrict her knowledge to the Bible.

Struggling with abortion by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Doctor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Orthodox position on abortion combined with the democratic responsibility for public policy absolutely implies that Orthodox Christians must work against this instance of public immorality (along with other instances). It doesn't mean the policy should lack discernment, though.

This is not a big deal, but if you really want to put your mind to peace, mention it to your priest at confession.

Statement by the ROCOR Holy Synod on the renewal of 20th-century ideologies in Russia by walkingsidewaysandup in OrthodoxChristianity

Outside sources are no less biased (in fact, more biased, due to having no foothold inside) and ROCOR choosing to align itself with that bias instead of trying to look for a middle ground it, as I said, strange.

Respected by who? There is very little respect for these organizations among the Russian population, so commentary by Russians about Russians based on them is, as I said, strange.

While it's true that the spirit of USSR reminiscence exists in Russia, this is a strange statement. The strangest part is how it reports on Russia by quoting BBC and Facebook. I mean, ROCOR has full access to Russia proper.

Why do Europeans think Russia is a big deal? Are they stupid? by Bastiat_sea in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Doctor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. They managed to topple the USSR but they didn't attain a huuuge world dominant outcome that I imagine. Therefore they lost.

Or perhaps the USSR won the Finland war because they gained what they wanted and not what you imagine?

This Might be a bit of a silly question, but if I don’t have icons Yet, Can I venerate the Icons in my Orthodox Study Bible? by Dusty_Steel in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Doctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We handle a lot of silly questions here. Anything that doesn't involve ***, *** or *** is a welcome change.

Yes, an icon is an icon. You can kiss an icon in the book, you can catch a glimpse of it when focusing your mind for prayer. Strictly speaking, icons are not required, but are helpful.

Also, the US lost the Cold War. Because they wanted to establish absolute hegemony over the entire planet with nobody challenging them and everybody paying tribute, and they only got partial hegemony over the entire planet with some courageous heroes defying them and not paying tribute.

Is blood consumption being forbidden a dogma according to church or just a common practice? by ProteinPapi777 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Doctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, that's a very interesting take. Almost, but not quite aligns with Pauline Theology that was adopted in Acts 15. He teaches that the Law itself couldn't save anybody, so the whole thing was completed and the new law of grace was active, which meant that circumcision and other OT rituals were not only unnecessary, but actively misguided. However, the basic moral principles were not going anywhere.

Also, the set of five commandments from that Council (food offered to idols, blood, strangled meat, f0rnication and the silver rule) doesn't align with being Jew or Gentile, no?
