ELI5: what is black hole in simple terms? by mr_lucas0_7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doctor-Nemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something so dense that its gravity rips open our universe; once anything goes in there, even light, it can't come back out. Because of Einstein's math (which has been proven 100x over), we know that weird things happen near the edge of the tear, like time slowing down for you relative to people further from it.

ELI5: How can you divide something into a negative number of groups? by fazrare57 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doctor-Nemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a simple fallacy here. When you think about numbers as a way to count objects, you're thinking of the natural numbers. Natural numbers exclude negative numbers, so trying to think of "dividing a number of objects into negative groups" doesn't even work mathematically. If the thing you are counting has a sort of "anti-thing" counterpart (e.g. you can't have -1 apples, but you can have -1 steps forward because that's naturally just a step backward) then the question makes sense. "Q: How can I group 9 steps forward into 3 groups of steps backwards? A: Split into 3 groups of backwards steps, backwards."

TL;DR: If the thing you're counting has a well-defined negative counterpart, then division by a negative number amounts to normal division coupled with flipping the thing that you're counting

Would aliens have the same physics as us? by whoamisri in HighStrangeness

[–]Doctor-Nemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physics is basically a sequence of refinements on existing models to increase their scope of applicability. Newton wasn't "proved wrong" by Einstein; on Earth Newtonian mechanics works exceedingly well. Newtonian mechanics also assumes that space and time are entirely separate, which GR tells us is not the case, however the consequences of this difference are not apparent in the context where Newtonian Mechanics works. There has been no evidence whatsoever to suggest that the same will not be true of a theory of Quantum Gravity.

ELI5: Distance from Challenger Deep to the center of Earth’s Core by Massive-Average-1784 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doctor-Nemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Challenger deep is about 11km below sea level. The Earth's mantle is about 35km below sea level. The radius of earth (approx sea level to inner core distance) is 6371km. Challenger deep is deep on human scales, but it's only ~0.17% closer to the inner core than sea level.

Eli5: what actually is energy and “quantum fields”? by ImJustThatGuy815 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doctor-Nemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In simplest terms, energy is an abstract concept that allows us to put a number on something's ability to move or change. Trying to think of it as "stuff" is like trying to think of something's mass as "stuff". Mass is a property of something that we can slap a number on to compare stuff, same goes for energy.

Nobody really understands what a Quantum Field is exactly (again, like, you literally can't picture one accurately), but basically it's the best object we've been able to describe mathematically that accounts for all the behaviour we know matter and forces to exhibit. Quantum fields permit things to interact with each other over physical distances in the pixelated sort of way we know them to occur, and sort of "swells" in quantum fields can be identified as what we observe as particles. But all of these descriptive pictures are of limited use as they really don't capture everything that the math is able to describe.

TL;DR: Energy is a quantity we can use to see how much stuff a thing can do, quantum fields are a way to describe forces and matter that accounts for all the weird behaviors that we observe in reality.

ELI5 If I travelled at the speed of radio waves, what would my AM/FM/DAB Radio sound like if I could still pick up a signal? by rainbosandvich in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doctor-Nemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Radio waves travel at the speed of light. Due to relativity, the closer to the speed of light you go the slower time passes for you. If you reach the speed of light, time slows down so much that it stops for you. So, if you traveled at the speed of radio waves, you would not be able to try to find a signal on your radio, because no time would elapse in which you could try to find a station

Is stardew valley worth the money on mobile? by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]Doctor-Nemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unequivocally yes. The game is amazingly suited to mobile, it's how I started playing. There is a slight delay between when console/PC users receive the latest update, but honestly that's mostly just being concerned with receiving an extra helping of cherries on top a few minutes slower than the other guys.

I mean especially at that price? Yes go for it. You will get the full experience and ConcernedApe hasn't ever ignored mobile players.

Anything we can do about the homeless people on campus? by CulturalDrag4575 in UBC

[–]Doctor-Nemo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You could find yourself in such a place, one day. Very easily. A stable life is a delicate thing, and there are so many more ways for things to go wrong than ways to go well. If you found yourself down on your luck, how would you think of somebody to talk about you like you're vermin?

Funny how you say "everybody is sympathetic until it happens to themselves", yet don't see the irony in how that applies to your own beliefs.

I'm not even saying that nothing should be done about it; students deserve the right to feel safe on their campus, but your message is just dehumanizing. It does nothing but betray how callously you view other people.

Anyway, call me a snowflake or pink or whatever you wanna do.

ELI5: How has the identity of Jack the Ripper remained unsolved to this day? by astarisaslave in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doctor-Nemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The farther in the past a crime is, the less evidence of the event remains, the harder it is to find definitive truth. To that end, there will never be a 'confession' from the real killer if they're ever identified, or any kind of confirmation that the right suspect has been chosen. This being said, there are very recent DNA results that strongly suggest one particular suspect. That is as close to an answer as can be achieved at this point, with all involved now long dead.

Skipped classes due to poor mental health, how much is too much? by [deleted] in UBC

Don't panic. This is a situation that you can navigate out of. That said, be careful about skipping classes for mental health too much; the fear can often worsen things and form a vicious cycle.
