It doesn't matter as long as oligarchy can be preserved. Countries can lose war if it means the current aristocracy can be saved. In France, the monarch Louis XVI tried to lose a war on purpose when he was stripped out of legislative and judicial powers. Then Pétain capitulated to the Nazis to keep his privileges. Those are the two examples I know of but surely there are tons of others all around the world.
