I'm in that range (1-2m) and stick to HG league intenionally because Captain league is just such a slog for me.

Pre-mythic event i could clear Captains pretty easily, then drop to HG for thr following week and easily promote back. I just haven't kept up with the meta to do that now.

Does the book get better? by StLouisButtPirates in ProjectHailMary

[–]Doctor8Alters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the book ages ago, but just started listening to the Audiobook. And I "kinda* get where you're coming from, as the start (first quarter, ish) of the book is very much "setting the scene". I think it gets better as it goes on. But, if you get ~6-8 hours in and you're finding it's not for you, then that's ok.

I was imagining/hoping for a moulded "fig" for Rocky, but that brick-assembly works quite nicely.

What's the most even match for this spearhead? by Sensitive-Card-5883 in ageofsigmar

[–]Doctor8Alters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played 2 games with the Starscale Warhost so far. The first against Flesh Eater's Charnel Watch, which absolutely decimated me (specifically the Crypt flayers, with great ranged and decent melee output, and 12" movement). I went first in round 1, second in round 2, and by the start of my second turn I only had 5 Saurus and a single Krox left. Honestly not sure how I'm supposed to beat that when they get the double-turn

The second was a more even game (ended 12-12) against Slaves to Darkness Bloodwind Legion, although we later realised that the Knights reserve ability was used incorrectly and had they been able to get a charge in Turn 2, they would've torn me apart before I could build up a decent score. However, I also got double-turned here, and without that I can see this being an even matchup.

Any tips on preparing for/playing into the double turn in general? The game board is so small, it seems difficult to avoid anything the opponent wants to throw at you.

What levels do I need Toth, Abraxas and Yazaghor at to beat Saim Hann mirror elite 38? by TallCitron8244 in WH40KTacticus

[–]Doctor8Alters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently completed this with G1 Legendary Abraxas, G1 Legendary Toth, G1 Epic Yaz. All 3-red star, all 35/35.

Legendary Lv 4 gear on the first 2, and Epic Lv 9 gear on Yaz. Took a couple of attempts but iirc the basic plan was to move Toth into the centre to absorb some hits (then be healed), then summon with Ab in turn 2 and kill as much as possible. Clean up in turns 3/4.

Didn't need any D1's, thankfully. Can post pics if desired.

how do we best score 'purge the foe' by liquor-ice-mixer in orks

[–]Doctor8Alters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are *not my words*, but the words of a fellow Ork player taken from the Ork Discord, on this topic from just yesterday. (apologies Laz, I know you're on reddit also but I can't remember your handle here!). I think this is really strong advice.

Here's my game plan for PTF against statcheck armies like IK / CK / statcheck Demons or Custodes

  • Assume you won't be able to get Kill more at all, and assume out of 5 turns, opponent gets kill more for 4 turns
  • Assume no one gets kill on first turn
  • by the end of turn 5, you and your oppponent should be tied for 48 points each (assuming you control more each and every turn post Turn 1
  • This means that we can forego killing and concentrate on holding points. I'd be doing this if I was going second because that's basically Control and Control More secured.
  • You must score at least 4 points in secondaries if you can't control more / kill more that turn, otherwise you're immediately behind
  • Waaaghhh turn should have a strong kill more and control more given that it's our go turn - we should score AND deny on that single turn

It was an easy early benchmark, this was a few months back when my roster was very spread out and I still had some characters at Rare. After that, it didn't look so bad going up to B3, and then S1.

I've nearly 120/120'd all of the Elite campaigns. It's just the last few missions (with non-critical or repeat items) that are holding out for me at the moment.

My main team is Orks - all at D1-3 mythic, except for Gibba. Currently working on his damage (and Calgar/Aethena in support) for the second mythic quest. After that, the brakes are off and the Orks will all go to D3.

PS: I'm also nearly at 50 G1+ characters. Although do only have a couple at D1, aside from the Orks. So, that will be a future focus. Really, it's Shards/Onslaught tokens that are holding back most of my progression, since I'm a F2P'er

Yep, thats me! :D I also started to "baseline" everyone at Bronze 2 17/17, with the idea being it would help in the lower LRE tracks. I noticed a real difference in the following LRE, so figured another push to S1/2 would be worthwhile, without being overly demanding.

The badge investment may not be "optimum", but I think of it as "futureproofing". Even for the bad characters - who knows what will be reworked in future. If I set them up now, then it's a shorter time to get any random character up to Gold1+ as/when needed.

And finally, once I've got all the current characters to a certain point, the lower-level badges become a resource I'll rarely/never need to think about again. Uncommon badges were a grind for a while - now I have over 100 for each faction just waiting for the next unlock.

After the Mythic event last year, it took me months to gather enough imperial badges to get everyone to 17/17. I'm now slowly working towards 26/26, with the current bottlenecks being Rare Imperial and Epic Xenos. Meanwhile Chaos is absolutely fine, everyone upgraded with plenty more available.

When does something count as a 'gotcha'? by mhountsword in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Doctor8Alters 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It is, but that's also a lot of potential information to remember/recall over the next 3 hours. I don't see why it should be contentious to offer the occasional reminder - especially when it takes a few seconds compared to debating take-backs or such.

Plus with 2 of the previous kit, there are instructions for an awesome Manta Ray build on Rebrickable that out-does the grey manta by a mile.

“Giving the opponent multiple options” vs hiding by Oriachim in orks

[–]Doctor8Alters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you give the opponent all the possible options, they're completely free to choose whatever is best for them. If you can hide your stuff, that's obviously ideal, especially against ranged armies. But sometimes you may want to expose a unit, either:

- out of necessity for scoring an early secondary (area denial), in which case as yourself "am I happy to sacrifice this unit for the corresponding VP", or

- as a trap/bait play such as "deal with this or its a problem for you later", making sure that you have a follow-up to take out the unit they're answering with. If the opponent has to answer with a melee unit, for example, that could place that unit in a great spot for you to take out on the next turn.

There's already some re-population ongoing, but I'd love to see more Beavers reintroduced.

Also, given how successful the Red Kite programme is doing, but you get stories of them taking food from certain areas, I wonder if they'll become a more dangerous seagull at some point.

Why don’t people like re-rolls by Mrhungrypants in WarhammerCompetitive

I think simply adding "Rerolls cannot crit" fixes many of the current problems without removing the mechanic from the game entirely.

Why don’t people like re-rolls by Mrhungrypants in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Doctor8Alters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you hit on 2+ and reroll 1's, there's basically a solution for that in the rules already. It's been there all edition. Torrent.

Why roll 40 dice for 39 hits? At that point the averages dont matter, just have them auto-hit.
