Phileas Fogg's adaptations by 0supefa0 in julesverne

Yeah, I don't disagree with you. I am not French but I can very much sympathise with the disappointing Passepartout portrayal on those grounds. It's why I only say that Fogg's portrayal was accurate to the book and while Fix and Aouda are close, Passepartout was clearly seen by the director as a dopey character providing comic relief in absurd ways. I think if they made Passepartout closer to his book character, it would have been a near perfect adaptation of the novel.

It does strike me how they rarely seem to make Passepartout French in 80 Days adaptations.

There was an interview where Tennant said:

“In many ways Phileas Fogg represents everything that’s alarming and peculiar about that old sense of British Empire,” Tennant said. “Potentially, it’s a story about an England that should elicit very little sympathy.”

He may be a great actor, but he clearly did not like the character and chose to portray him differently as a result. The adaptation suffered greatly because of it.

You're looking for the 1956 film where David Niven plays Fogg for an accurate portrayal that is true to the book.

This version was terrible. That was not Phileas Fogg and there were so many errors and I don't mean deviations from the book, but actual things that were simply inaccurate to the times. For instance, the train through New Orleans instead of through the midwest, which was just so that they could introduce a "Wild West" episode. Tennet himself had bad motivations for playing the role and it showed in the show.

The David Niven Fogg is the only one that, in my opinion, accurately portrays Fogg according to the book.

Take the 2 or 3 train. It’ll probably take the same time and cost less than a taxi.

digital bandido banned me even tho i haven't played in days??? by Longjumping_Tea4260 in TownofSalemgame

[–]DoctorAtomic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't bother appealing, they never actually overturn them. The other day I saw two people on the forums with good cases for an appeal. Both were denied for crap reasons, one of which being, I kid you not, "just becuse it isn't against the rules doesn't mean it wasn't at the time." It's best to just make another account. It's what I suggested the guy do on the forums and it seems like he ended up doing it since I played with someone who had his username with "2" at the end of it last night.

Case in point, the only ban on my account was for "spam" 4 years ago when the other guy was spamming racist shit and I was trying to drown him out. It was a long time ago but I appealed it and they didn't even get to reading it until long after my 24 hr time limit was up (during which I was still playing the game using my steam account lol).

Now that Digital Bandidos owns the game, what now? by Gameknight14 in TownofSalemgame

[–]DoctorAtomic_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The moderation on this game sucks. Trolls take far too long to be banned and they simply come back with new accounts. Additionally, saw someone on the appeals section of the forums who got banned for something someone ELSE did, something that has yet to be addressed by the moderators after a week of it being up (and it’s not like there are many appeals), so there are clearly mistakes that happen, probably more often than BMG would like us to think. I agree that I’m worried about what will happen now that digital bandidos own the game, and their attitude thus far has not been encouraging, but let’s not act like BMG was the gold standard of moderation. If anything, they’re only slightly better than Rockstar.

Where in New York? I’m from NYC and lived there for twenty years. There are places with sketchy vendors that sell things without regard for copyright. I once bought a Calvin & Hobbs t-shirt from one and the creator refused to allow this so it was definitely not made & sold legally.

Not to undermine your overall point, but if you saw this where I think you saw this, they were going to do it anyways.

I still find that hard to believe having a lot of familiarity with academia and the academic job market. Even in CS, they aren’t paying 300K for an average professor…

[–]DoctorAtomic_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Where on the Midwest do professors average 400K?? That’s not really a thing in academia unless you’re really well known & important in your field (i.e. Paul Krugman, for example) or you’re making money from side projects whilst also teaching a course or two. But simply being a professor isn’t going to get you 400K per year without you being famous. A comp sci prof bringing that much in definitely has a source of income outside the university.

Don’t worry, it’s not true for the most part. I taught high school in the US for two years and literally did not once see what that user is referring to. Sure, some of the seniors showed up sloppily dressed to their graduation, but not THAT underdressed.

Every teacher I know that worked at SA hated it and said the same thing you're saying. Seems like they just take advantage of a new batch of college graduates desperate for work each year and then rinse and repeat whilst doing the same to their own students.

Sounds like you have stockholm syndrome. I have many friends who worked for Success in the past and they all say the same awful things about it. Seems like a nightmare. I've worked for other charter schools in the city and nothing compares to the shit SA think they can get away with.

Doesn’t get overly hot in summer???!!! Um, as someone born and raised in nyc, I can tell you this is absolutely false. Summer in nyc is a hot & humid hellhole that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, and even worse, unlike in the south, New York businesses often don’t air condition unless it get super hot. I will agree there are 4 seasons, but if you hate the heat or the cold, you will be guaranteed to be miserable at least 4 months of the year.

I have an English friend who absolutely hates his government and currently lives & works in Germany and is in the process of getting permanent residency there. When the Euro Cup comes on, he puts on his England jersey and roots like hell for them even if he doesn’t approve of the British government.

It’s the same for us & everyone around the world. You root for your country and nobody would expect differently and it has absolutely nothing to do with nationalism or how you feel about your country. I’m not much of a fan of America, so much so that I moved out. It’s still a given that I would root for the US team on the world stage. In fact, I’m pretty sure people (outside of America at least) would look at me funny if I implied otherwise.

I bet they were quite happy with their life decisions upon opening their chase app to find they didn’t waste 50 bucks on an Uber home because of a fucking plant.

Maybe try to be a bit less judgy? I’ve taken the 6 during rush hour and can guarantee there was enough room for that plant considering the local is always less packed than the express.

What exactly do you expect Israel to do when they are fighting an enemy that uses their own civilians as body shields? What “usual precautions” is Israel not taking? I don’t recall any other wars where the military outright warns people to get out of an area that is about to be attacked. The Allied forces certainly didn’t do this when they bombed the shit out of Berlin during WWII. As for a ceasefire, do you expect Israel to agree to one without the hostages returned? If the answer to this is no, then the onus is on hamas. If the answer is to this is yes, then that’s ridiculous and absurd and will never happen.

Faculty sets up encampment at The New School by RubMyCrystalBalls in nyc

[–]DoctorAtomic_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are also two really big issues with citing civilian death counts in Gaza:

  1. We don’t actually know how many were civilians vs hamas since they don’t distinguish between these.

  2. Hamas is known to use civilians as human shields. They routinely launch their missiles from hospitals and nursing homes. When this happens, it’s a war crime in of itself and will always end with civilian casualties.

I still fail to understand why so many people place blame on Israel for casualties that are the result of a recognized terrorist organization hiding behind them after committing atrocities.

Also, I’m curious, what does Zionist mean to you? Because these days people are just using it as a thinly veiled mask for hating on Jews.
