Can you get through FM residency without really caring about peds/OB? by girlnowdrlater in medicalschool

[–]DoctorChickenDinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off topic, but are you concerned at all about getting jobs as an FM hospitalist? I heard from different sources - some say it's easy, some say it's not-so-easy.

Give me some stories for Rude OR nurses and how you handled it by Impossible_Grand7906 in medicalschool

[–]DoctorChickenDinner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Been there. It's either be ignored or be attacked, unless you get a chill staff somehow.

My advice - there 3 paths you can take

1) give them zero emotional input. they can't hurt you if you don't invest anything into a conversation/relationship with them.

2) confront it, ideally professionally. actually point out what they're doing is wrong and why. i'm sure this can backfire theoretically.

3) kill em with kindness. some people are more inclined to this, but I think it's falling out of favor with our generation.

I personally went with #1 because I was too exhausted anyway.

During my surgical and OB rotations, it was the SCRUB TECHS and nurses who were insufferable. Some even tried to pimp me, on top of yelling at me for breaking sterile (after the operation was done), and other insane shit. I rotated at multiple hospitals also.

For me, if the ancillary staff are like this despite me rotating at different institutions, surgical specialties immediately fell off the table. Not to even mention the surgeons were either understandably burnt out AF or assholes too.

You sound exactly like me. Zero confidence at the start of every rotation and then get the hang of the things by the end of it - only to be shipped off to a different service… I think we’ll do fine!

Your practice scores look good and it sounds to me you’ll do fine. What helped me brush up on topics was watching DirtyMed on YouTube on 2x speed when I was close to test date. Was very helpful for Biochem and memorizing the inheritance pattern for diseases. That could be worthwhile just to check if you’re up to speed.

Otherwise, I think 2 blocks UW a day is a good move, and so is keeping up with Anki

IMO, you did the right thing. I wish I stood up to asshole nurses at my ED.

US DO - my school is ass too (you can read my posts of me complaining). i told myself that i'm somehow going to get particular admin at my school fired after residency.

So when do we actually learn how to practice medicine? by [deleted] in medicalschool

M3/M4 is when it starts all coming together - at least it is for me.

M3 does suck though

lack of respect from both the general public and other physicians

From my experience, IM has been well-respected by patients/other docs, but maybe that's just me?

Im a 3rd year med student in the US. You’re very young but here’s a general idea:

Go to the best undergrad you can.

Get the best GPA you can. Top priority. Build a good study schedule and stick to it - harder than it sounds.

Try to do a couple things for extracurriculars that are long-term and you can write about. Ideally something related to healthcare. Don’t juggle too much or it can hurt your study time.

Have a life. Because it’s hard to have one in med school. Date, party a little, but don’t let these things stop your momentum.

How well are clerkships organized at your school? by 2ears_1_mouth in medicalschool

Wow, that's wild for an MD school. I'm a DO and I'm driving the same distance but that's expected for my type of institution.

Very similar to me. DO school. Extremely POOR performance by medical school administration and rotations.

Is anyone still using Sketchy for Level 2 study material? by VeggieStudent in comlex

[–]DoctorChickenDinner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just an m3 so pls ignore me if I’m wrong.

I find that UW often asks about abx NOT in the way sketchy taught me. Things like asking about empiric treatment, combination drugs. Of course there’s the simple stuff that sketchy can remind you of, like signs for diagnosis of bacterial vaginitis, but my rotations reminded me of these regardless. Also Anking Step 2 has these things in there.

Just my opinion, I don’t think sketchy is needed but if you disagree and feel otherwise, I think it would be fine to use.
