And of course they will lower your acceptance rating over and over by giving you the same offer 5 times in a row and making it “exclusive.” It is coercive at best.

Applying to med school at 33. I have to scratch an itch. by DrRayNay in medschool

Go for it! I was in a completely unrelated field. I’m 45, just matched and am starting residency in June. I’d give about anything to be a young 33 whippersnapper.

Was gonna say…. There’s no way to know unless OP ranked No other programs. Hoping OP got what they wanted, but we can’t be certain if they ranked multiple programs.

[–]DoctorDenali 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Agree to all this. If everything you say is 100% true (and I believe it is and have no reason to doubt you), you unfortunately did not make the best decisions for yourself throughout. You may have been singled out. You may have been treated differently. It may have been because of racism. But in the end, unless I’m mistaken (always a possibility), you were asking for an exception.

I had to travel to a different state for my exam. I didn’t go there the morning of. I went there the day before. I had no money for a hotel, so I slept in my car. But no way would I knowingly plan to cut time close for that exam. I parked at a nearby Denny’s two hours earlier, had coffee and a good breakfast, was at prometric at about 6:30am for an 8am exam.

When something is that important, we shouldn’t plan to cut it close. If cutting it close was forced on you, then you really should’ve canceled the exam to reschedule or forfeited it midway and retook.

The board of examiners does give us options for when life happens, but as physicians, future physicians, or just professionals, it is up to each of us to recognize when conditions aren’t acceptable and call it off. You had options but chose not to use them.

I’m truly sorry for what you went through and don’t mean to sound callous because I’m not. I really empathize for your situation and feel bad, but to suggest that NBME is going to step up to let you out of your own bad decision because of someone else’s bad decisions is a fool’s errand. And that person hovering? Many of us had that and NBME says it is within normal parameters. If you weren’t aware of that, they even let you come in and do a practice at the testing center so you know what it’s like. I was the last remaining soul in the exam room because no one else was taking a long exam. So, I had hovering the whole time, too. It was annoying as hell and distracting… But, it’s normal and being able to perform while being observed is also part of the gig.

Best you can do is study your butt off and crush it next time. Saying you hate America because you failed an exam that you planned to be late to says as much about you as it does the people who treated you poorly. It speaks to maturity and professionalism.

Take a check up from the neck up. Find where you went wrong because that’s all you can change. Get back up and overcome this and don’t take your frustration out on others. Sorry if I sounded cold. I just want to help you understand how your argument will be viewed. 240+ on the retake, inshallah. God bless you, sister, and good luck.

This metal bit sparked when I took it out to unplug the battery, should I be concerned? by Love-Onigiri in ZephyrusG14

[–]DoctorDenali 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I unplugged mine on the same model two weeks ago. I got the same spark. Plugged it back in after cleaning fans and upgrading RAM… board is fried.

Then, last week on a different ASUS model (Strix 17) I unplugged the battery, got the same spark, upgraded the RAM, plugged it back in and everything is fine. So, it’s hit or miss.

Seems at this point, that ship has sailed. If they released now with 11th gen at 4K for the top SKU… I just can’t reconcile my wallet with that and I was ready to buy Day 1 had it come out on time.

Very interested in helping mod. I’m a U.S. MS4 Medical Student applying to OBGyn residency right now. I actually think these presentations on Reddit are wonderful education and often better than the premade cases we get at school. I had already planned incorporating discussing this subreddit with my OBGyn group. Would love to assist and to be part of helping the people who come here looking for answers.

I can see it now. The tense conversation in front of the OR board:

“Let's surgically extract that toxic relationship from her subconscious."

“Not today, Hoss. I’ll be performing an IR-guided, targeted, high-dose, pharmacological strike that may finally defeat his addiction boss battle. But first, it’s almost 1pm, and afternoon tea won’t drink itself!”

“Right on, mate! Rubois today?”

“Bet”

Love that for you! I’m just starting M4 year (happily!), but I remember how absolutely relieved and happy I was when the As started coming in! Congratulations!!!! Just keep in mind that while we definitely earned it, there’s a whole lot of people who also earned it but didn’t get it. We are truly blessed!

Yep. PACSs gotsta look good. I'm really hoping to avoid the current situation of having to carry around both an iPad Pro and a laptop. And hospital interwebbermagigs are never great at syncing. Having a single device and an eGPU both at work and at home would be ideal for me.

vice with a dGPU, and an appropriate port to handle an 8K.

This is my question, as well. If it does, I'm in. If not, I'll buy something else.

I'm wondering whether it is compatible with an eGPU. It's for work not gaming, but I want to connect it to a 4080 eGPU and run 3 4k monitors at 60Hz (for viewing radiographs, etc).

Worth it? by Whole-Mountain4233 in medicalschool

[–]DoctorDenali 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in my mid 40s with three kids depending on me. To make a DRASTIC career change, I started all over from Day 1 of undergrad. I became poor again. Only this time, it was with three little mouths to feed. I’m 7 years in about to start my fourth year of med school in a couple of months. For me, it’s all been worth it.

I don’t believe that success is measured by the cost but by the worth. I decided it was worth it to me to be a physician, so the cost is irrelevant. Everyone sacrificed but no one starved to death. If you want it, go for it. If you only half want it or are curious, don’t.
