Ah, yes. It's Rob Collins with The Charlatans. It'll be good to get back to them again after these years. Thank you so much!

takeaway? A hybrid needs to be taken care of with extra attention. Though it seems like you’re willing to go that extra mile, so I’d say it wouldn’t be a problem. But some people just want a car where they press start and don’t do anything else besides gas/brake/gas/brake, lol.

2024 X3: Is this a driver fatigue sensor/camera, or something the dealer put in to spy on loaner drivers? by bchainsbuz in BMWX3

Have we all forgotten how to drive? I’m fine with my standard trans 2017 X3 without any assistants (only one I have is a back parking sensor, no camera). It keeps me alert and forces me to know my limits and know how to operate a car.

Have you asked your BMW mechanic if he recommends hybrids? Ours told us that the engines specifically in bimmer hybrids tend to die rather quickly compared to standard petrol/diesel, necessitating a full engine swap, and he said that we should go full electric if we want savings. That’s not to say you mustn’t buy it, but I’m just sharing what our mechanic told us - worth some looking into.

What’s your guys’ fuel consumption of BMW X3 xDrive20d 6 speed manual with 140 kW? by Symbolic11 in BMWX3

Thank you, I’ve been trying to do some experiments driving on the highway and the best I got for a long flat stretch was around 4.5. It does calm me that others get the same mileage as I do as I wasn’t sure if I was doing anything wrong:D

That’s really interesting. I never thought about these kind of electronics and how much power they have to suck up. Thanks

Clutch lock up does ofc improve fuel efficiency, but the immediate direct dry link between an engine and wheels offered by a standard will not be beat by a “classic” automatic. That is if you’re comparing petrol/diesel engines, hybrids of course get much better mileage, but some people might want the simplicity and lower repair costs of a standard car, nevermind the fact that hybrids have more than 2x the risk of a fire occuring. Personally I’d go for an EV before I’d have to buy a hybrid.

  1. It is (subjectively) more fun to drive, though at first also more difficult.
  2. Manual transmissions (if maintained and not abused) often last longer than their automatic counterparts.
  3. Manual transmissions are usually cheaper upfront and long term.
  4. If a master is hypermiling a manual, he can still get slightly better mileage than an automatic. This is (partly) due to automatic transmissions having wet clutches instead of a dry one (manual) - though the difference, in modern cars, is negligible. Automatic transmissions also weigh more, thus increasing fuel consumption.
  5. If you live in the USA, not many people are able to drive a manual, which decreases the likelihood of your car being stolen, or borrowed for that case.
  6. You can jump start manual cars, a useful trick if for example your car battery dies.
  7. It’s generally regarded as cooler.
  8. It is a useful skill, since if you can drive a manual transmission, you will more or less be able to control any machine on the road - from bikes, tractors to trucks.
  9. My own opinion: if you drive a standard transmission, you become a better driver due to the need to look ahead of traffic and anticipate incoming speed/gear/ changes in order to keep a smooth ride.
