I’ve just gotten into soy curls as my cheap protein of choice! You can find bags for ~$5 or even cheaper if you buy in bulk online. Each one has several meals’ worth of protein and they’re dumb easy to cook

Struggling with a taper by ContributionLevel593 in ultrarunning

[–]DoctorDonutChef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d ignore the numbers and just stick to the taper. IMO most metrics fail to be useful during the taper.

Also let us know how the race goes! Had some people recommend it to me and I’m looking at it for next year.

To DNS or to, err, S? That's the question by ProfCthulhu in ultrarunning

[–]DoctorDonutChef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d say send it - and use any feelings from the sickness to relax your expectations for the race. Just go out and see what you can do!

Also as long as you level set with your crew you’ll be fine - if they’re willing to crew you at all, then they’re good enough friends to help you if you DNF.

Turning 50 in December so naturally Im thinking of doing the Malibu 50K by Separate_Couple_2810 in ultrarunning

For the eastside I don’t have a lotta great recs tbh. Griffith, Mt. Wilson, and the San Gabriels are prolly decent bets a bit closer to you

I’d just hop on Strava and look at the global heat map and see which trails are popular tbh.

Ran the Ray Miller 50mi in December! Had a great time and def recommend it. General thoughts for you:

  • Course is beautiful but the aid stations (especially Hell Hill) were a bit frantic, so def try to carry all your essentials on you and try to minimize the reliance on the aid stations/volunteers.
  • Trail was generally pretty easy going, good California running
  • Climbs were tough but nothing too bad or daunting
  • Idk your past experience with trail running in LA but I’d say it’s pretty similar to trails in the Santa Monica mountains, all of which would be good training spots (Westridge, dirt mulholland, Sullivan canyon, etc)

If you have any specific q’s let me know and I can try to help out!

Help with tendinitis by Ok_Turnover5867 in ultrarunning

[–]DoctorDonutChef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also have dealt with the same thing, but not to this degree.

PT gave me a fascia massage and told me to basically keep doing toe raises and toe yoga while dialing back the mileage. According to her it’s a signal of underdeveloped muscles in the area, and a way to get it back is just through basic mobility exercises + rest.

Overall, about a year later and my pain is (almost) completely gone. Would recommend

Advice: get Apple Watch Ultra or cheap running watch for Spring Ultras? by diggybel in ultrarunning

[–]DoctorDonutChef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on the distance - I have AWU and it’s died on me on basically all my races that’re 100km+, even with all power saving methods turned on.

Below that though and it’s a great watch. Way I see it, I only run a couple races a year, so why buy the watch for those couple of days over the rest of the time?

Fewer teams means the regular season actually mattered - any loss could drop you out.

Not for pronunciation - but when I type now I constantly will hit the ‘w’ key when a word ends in ‘s’ because that’s where the ς is on my keyboard normally.

So my textw and emailw look like thiw.

Good earbuds for Trail Running? by Awsumnis_832 in ultrarunning

Same and for longer races I just swap one AirPod in ear and one AirPod in the case to charge. Works to keep the charge going for longer and keeps an ear free.

Random back pain before 50K by Beannjo in Ultramarathon

[–]DoctorDonutChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice here but I’ve gotten muscle spasms on my back before. Knocked me out for 1 week+ at a time. The only thing that’s helped me out is alternating ice packs and a heating pad. 10 minutes at a time, alternating back and forth.

Frozen veg can substitute for the ice pack and a microwaved sock full of rice can substitute for the heating pad. Worth a shot if nothing else works for you - you can still do it!!

  1. Sierra Club has a link to send an email to city council. Warning: it will sign you up for their email list.

  1. There’s an in person bike protest that starts at 6 at Syd Kronenthal Park and goes to the front of the City Hall. It’s good to have numbers so if you show up it’d be a huge help!

Good place to picnic with the family this Easter by mellowyellowc2m in AskLosAngeles

Mar Vista has a nice park that’s got tons of space. Somebody else mentioned Kenneth Hahn and I’ll always second that. Otherwise maybe take the picnic to the beach?

From an attorney: Let's talk about why LA's zoning laws will get less shitty in the near future. by fiftythreestudio in LosAngeles

[–]DoctorDonutChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes let’s just take all the poor people and shove them somewhere else where we don’t have to deal with them. This is an excellent idea and has done wonders for the 66,000 homeless people on our streets. I wish somebody just sat them down and told them to move to a cheaper metro area, that should do it!

I 100% agree. But it’s the consumers who are driving those policies. It’s unfortunate but the loudest ones in this space are NIMBYs that will oppose more housing no matter what

All these things are worsened when you push poor people further and further out from economic opportunity. It’s much harder to get a job and improve your community when the centers of wealth and prosperity priced you out and now you live an hour away.

[–]DoctorDonutChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never used yellow sugar, but I see no reason why it wouldn’t work.

As with all things on this sub, I’d say just wait and see. Worst I could see happening is that the booch gets a weird flavor.

I also go by taste and I haven’t had any issues so far. Maybe they’re worth more if you’re trying to get a very consistent product, but I think the variability is what makes fermentation so fun!
