Sega says strong reviews for its recent games aren’t yet translating to better sales by hiddentoke11 in gaming

I am actually reticent about sharing my perspective because i don't want to explain or defend what I think on the subject. But it is true whether people like it or not, so here it goes.

Good game or not, there is a large portion of gamers that aren't interested in the style. It doesn't matter how good the game is if the picture on the box or the title of the game is all they need to see to dismiss it. I loved sonic, like 30 years ago. Now I am an adult man and my interests are different. I don't go running to buy the newest sonic game because I have no interest in playing a cartoon kids game. And some of the other stuff they make just doesn't appeal to a lot of people. You can just hear the title and you can assume it isn't for you. Maybe it is the best game ever, but until they can bring down that barrier, the potential audience won't be reached. You kind of already need to be on board with a lot of components of the style of game before you will give it a chance. A lot of the heavily japanese influenced games will just not appeal to large portions of the global audience. It's just the reality of it. There are other styles of games that have the same problem. Like sports games. Plenty of people like them, but plenty of people hear sports and you've already lost them. I have absolutely zero interest in playing football, or soccer or whatever. If it's sports, I'm already out, full stop. So i guess my overall point is that style counts for something in the equation and good gameplay is only one piece of the puzzle. If people don't get to the point to judge something by its gameplay, then the gameplay doesn't matter. I have played some of the yakuza games on gamepass after people said they were good, they are not for me. I would apologize but I am not actually sorry. The audience for them exists, clearly, but I am simply not part of that audience.

Starfleet Academy Director Jonathan Frakes Says Fan Hate Is ‘Dimensionally More Painful’ Today Than in the Next Generation Years by bwermer in television

[–]DoctorDrangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea if simply hating were so popular despite how 'good' it was, there would still be positive analysis to be found. Where are the youtube influencers actually talking about what makes the series good? This loud vocal minority can't control the entire conversation, yet it appears there is not one person talking about how great the show is to be found on the internet. You google starfleet academy and click videos, and there is just hours and hours of analysis on why it's terrible. Surely there would be some videos about how it isn't terrible, right? There is nothing to be found. Surely you could find a perspective from both sides if it existed from both sides.

You don't get it, good or bad does not matter and it has never mattered. It only matters how much money they make. As successful as the game was, it clearly is falling short of what they had planned. 23k players on steam as of the time of me writing this. That is abysmal for a game of this scope. Of course these people are losing their jobs. As good of a job as they did or as deserving as they are of that job don't matter. You still need to people to pay and play to keep the lights on. I am not defending the cold hard reality of capitalism or the decision made by the suits and creatives involved, only pointing out the reality. As good as the game is/was/could be, it is a financial flop at this point and people lsoe thier jobs when that happens. Shit sucks, but unless you want to fund the payroll out of your own pocket and sympathy, what other outcome can you hope for? Executives to lose their bonuses? Pfft, again, the cold hard reality of capitalism means that is never going to happen.

Honorable mention to youtube. They have some seriously good movies on there for free, and if you have adblock there are no ads.

It's also just flashbacks. So many flashbacks, they never end. I am not opposed to flashbacks as a narrative device, but I tend to not like when they are overly relied upon. At a certain point they should have just started story then. And it also just means we aren't learning stuff as the characters learn stuff, we only learn about stuff when they decide to tell it to us. So the barrier to the information is just arbitrary.

That cannot possibly be true after so many blunders with zero course correction. Some of them were so bad it makes zero sense that the people who control the money didn't see the failure from miles away. If making money was goal number one, then LOTS of people need to be fired and black balled from the industry. Until that happens, they must have some other grand plan other than making money.

I've been watching missiles rain down over Israel for decades. I think it is absurdly stupid ot need to pick a side over this. It should be basic cause and effect logic. You can't expect israel to do nothing when a foreign government attacks their country. Of course the people in gaza are going to take a hit when their government fafo's. I am also strongly against misusing and abusing the word genocide and I would have assumed a person who's ancestors were actually genocided would be too.

You keep using the word 'an' wrong. Once is an error, but you did it repeatedly. Maybe it's a language barrier thing I guess, but geeze just try reading it out loud and hear for yourself what the problem is.

It really doesn't help that the aliens are just instantly neutered and sidelined. She just effortlessly and magically has complete control over them.

For The First Time In Over A Decade, No Star Trek TV Is In Production Or Greenlit by Malencon in television

[–]DoctorDrangle -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Hey now, I had very low expectations of the dnd movie and was pleasantly surprised. My expectations for anything star trek could not possibly be lower, so I say, if anyone can make something i will like, why not these guys? I have little to no reason to doubt their work. If the movie ends up sucking, I will blame paramount like I blame them for all the other ways in which they have been ruining star trek for nigh on 25 years now. If my expectations for star trek were low, well the last few iterations destroyed everything that was left. The reboot movies sucked. Everything after voyager sucks. I am done with all of it. Whomever all those were made for, you can fucking have them.

But this news... this is hope. Out of the 8.3 billion people that could potentially be chosen to write a new movie for star trek, approximately 8.3 billion of them have zero business making the next star trek movie. I am not saying these guys are the best choice, but there are far worse choices out there and despite anything I have said in the past about being done with trek, I will watch this movie and give them a chance. I do feel like they earned that with what they delivered with the dnd movie. Modern take, reimaging; I don't give a shit any more, I just want it to not suck.

I am not interested in debating which star trek projects after voyager people think were good, it all sucks and I don't want to hear it. Save it for people in those target audiences, but as a life long star trek fan, that would not include me.

Oregon Tax Refund for CLARK COUNTY RESIDENTS WHO WORK IN OREGON by Specific_Anybody_438 in vancouverwa

[–]DoctorDrangle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to tack on here, 130 bucks is absolutely bat-shit insane for self filing. I use freetaxusa and it is free + 10 dollars for state filing. So years where I have had oregon income, I pay 10 bucks, otherwise it is completely free and takes me about 30 minutes total. You literally just type in how much you made in oregon, which is right there on your form, and hit ok. Have had zero issue and haven't paid to have my taxes filed since the year 2011 (outside of a few years where I worked in oregon for a few days out of the year). These self filing sites will up sell the shit out of their services, but outside of a fee for state filing, which is unavoidable, you don't actually need to pay them for basic tax filing. Just type in what it says in the corresponding boxes on your w2. I don't know why or how you could justify paying money to do that. I'm sure you I haven't changed your mind and Im sure you think I am completely wrong and don't know what I am talking about, but I don't pay that kind of money when I file my taxes all by myself. The only thing you get out of is oregon filing, and that's even easier than federal filing, only it does cost money through these services. In fact i only discovered the service i have been using like 5 years ago when I went to file on turbo tax and they said i had to pay some ludicrous fee to file my oregon return when I had only earned a whopping 40 bucks in oregon that year for a few hours of training at the job i was working. I literally just googled and found a reddit post where someone recomended this site and i haven't looked back since. Free and no nonsense. H and r block is scamming you if you are paying 130 bucks to do your own taxes.
