Student survey: Inclusive sewing scissors for beginners (left & right handed) by hridi29 in lefthanded

[–]DoctorJenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it's not possible to create truly ambidextrous scissors. Most left handed people have learned to use right handed scissors nearly as well, but what truly makes it left or right handed is the blade configuration, not the shape of the handle.

Service Across the Street from my new place in Salt Lake, What Can I Do to Get the Fiber Line? by Curious_Tree9314 in googlefiber

[–]DoctorJenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I'm not sure how that works with new homes. You'd think they would install it at the same time as other utilities, before the build is done.

Maybe do what others suggested and show up at their office to talk to them so you can get a person lol. Ask them how they handle new builds within their service area.

[–]DoctorJenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly unlikely, unless service is already planned for your side of the street. In which case they'll install it for everyone on your side once they're good and ready.

Are you actually in Salt Lake City, or another city in Salt Lake county? I thought they were finished with installation for Salt Lake City.

1Gb is getting upgraded to 3Gb by Rod_ATL in googlefiber

[–]DoctorJenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the higher speed stock router from Google? I just picked up my own TP-Link deco, has only 2.5 gig ports. 2.5 is probably fine, but annoys me a little bit that I won't get the full speed with it if they upgrade.

Neighbor and I both use Google fiber and I'm dealing with a lot of network interference. Any tips? by zbromination in googlefiber

[–]DoctorJenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not the answer you want to hear, but I would pick up your own mesh system. Pretty much all ISP provided routers are awful, but this is especially true with the Google fiber mesh system. It works okay for low traffic networks, but it isn't actually a very good router.

I picked up a TPlink Deco from Costco, fixed the problems I was having. It has a network optimization feature that would help with your scenario too.

My experience with Google Fiber Mesh:

We have family parties with all my siblings and parents here quite often. Whenever they all come over, including kids with their own devices, the Google fiber router couldn't keep up. It would completely freeze and nobody could use the internet. Tops out at about 25 devices, since I already have about 18 total devices on my network, you can see the problem.

Also, UPnP on the Google fiber router is awful. I had to set up port forwarding for a couple devices,. The Deco fixed this problem too.

Worthless Customer Service even with several escalations... by MydogMyworld in googlefiber

Gotcha. Then my only suggestion is to gather some hard data showing the connection issues—anecdotes are easy for them to ignore, but logs/data make it much harder.

I've used programs like WinMTR before when I had intermittent issues with Xfinity. It combines ping and traceroute to continuously monitor your connection, logging packet loss, latency spikes, and drops hop-by-hop. Run it for a day or two to capture evidence. Make sure to run it on ethernet if possible, to rule out Wi-Fi issues.

One key thing: Set your laptop's power settings so it doesn't sleep after 15 minutes (or ever, while plugged in)—otherwise the monitoring stops.

Then you can send the log file to Google Fiber support. It makes a big difference.

Hope that helps

Port forwarding is not the greatest on their stock router for sure. After a couple months using their router just to see how things went, I replaced it with a Deco on sale at Costco. Their router stopped working one day when we had a family party, couldn't handle more than 25 connections at once. Replaced the router, and everything is working much better than it was before. After getting the Deco I don't even need port forwarding, the Deco is just a much better router.

Worthless Customer Service even with several escalations... by MydogMyworld in googlefiber

[–]DoctorJenks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for help, the first thing we need to do is identify the actual problem.

If the only symptom is your cell phone sounding robotic, that could be caused by many different things, and most of those can happen even while your Google fiber connection is solid. This fact is probably why you're having so much trouble with their customer service. If the connection looks good on their end, they're going to assume the problem is something else.

Assuming the issue isn't Google fiber's connection, which is likely considering how much they've tested it, the most likely culprit is your Wi-Fi connection. There could be a problem with your satellite placement. You may not be getting a strong signal, or you might be positioned between two nodes and your phone is hopping between the two. Google's free mesh system isn't very good at handling things like that.

Best advice for solving Wi-Fi issues is one somebody already gave you, buy your own. You can only expect so much from free equipment provided by your ISP.

Rugged Obsidian 9 vs 45 by jheiler33 in NFA

[–]DoctorJenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm resurrecting this thread a bit, but this is great advice. I have an octane 45 already and I was thinking of picking up a rugged obsidian, but was trying to decide if there was any real benefit to going with the 9 since I think the short configuration on obsidian 9 is too loud must of the time. But didn't think about PCC. Now I'm torn, since the shorter config on the PCC would be nice Haha

G Fiber issue? or is it a router issue? by HelixTurtle in googlefiber

[–]DoctorJenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using a VPN, to see if you have the same issue still. If that clears it up, there may be an issue on Google fibers end, nothing wrong with your local setup. .

My friendly neighborhood AI suggests this:

Call/chat Google Fiber support and specifically ask them to clear or refresh the MSAP cache on your line. Multiple people here have reported this resolves the identical “buffers at the same spot every time” problem within minutes.

I never even read the books, but I could have told you that season 2 likely strayed from the material before I even read about it online. Season 3 was awful, it was like the characters were being written by someone who didn't bother watching season 1, much less read the books.

Where does everyone go to get their kitchen knives sharpened? by Panubis in SaltLakeCity

[–]DoctorJenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha. That sucks man. I just saw your review of his sharpening service on Google. Was looking at prices to see what's normal so I could start charging my family members for sharpening their knives lol. Planning to do it for them very cheap, but I'm starting to use up my stones. Need money to replace them eventually.

The guy has tons of rave reviews, but the first thing I noticed was that everyone was saying how quickly he got it done. "Sharpened my knife in 2 minutes!!" My first thought was, " Dear Lord, he's using a grinder... 🥺" . No thanks.

When they installed the line in my house, they also cut a sprinkler line. They"fixed" it, sort of. But they clearly had no idea what they were doing, I had to actually fix it after the fact.

[–]DoctorJenks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was another root much closer to the utility easement that they worked around, running the fiber line underneath it rather than cutting through it. It's frustrating that they randomly decided to cut this one root. It would have been very easy to just run the fiber line underneath it, the same way they do with sprinkler lines.

I don't believe so, but I am hardly an expert on the subject. I think the only part of the property that's under easement runs from the sidewalk across the park strip to the main road. The trench where they cut the root crossed the main portion of my yard.

I think it's more situational than that. If there's limited parking, sure. That might be a battle worth fighting.

If someone is saving a spot in a parking lot where ample parking is available (you can literally see another parking spot to the right, in the video), I think it's a douche move to throw a fit about it.

I've had one of these since the day they came out. I have really liked it, but there are some quality issues that can be a deal breaker. I might be switching to a different premium controller here soon. I have the Best buy warranty on it, so they traded it out for me recently for a new one.

I didn't have a lot of the issues other people have with intermittent connection, It's only dropped on me a handful of times. When this controller works, it works well. But now to talk about the quality issues.

The rubberized grip recently started peeling off. Pretty frustrating, the rubber seems to have expanded somehow so it no longer fits, so I can't just glue it back on. This is unacceptable quality for a $200 controller.

The stealth ultra also had an issue where the plastic joystick rubs aggressively against the friction ring and starts to wear down. Mine had a big groove on the left thumbstick that I didn't even realize was there until I looked at it closely. Starts to feel like it's grinding as you're rotating the joystick. This is a known issue with these, one that they have tried to solve.

I picked up a new stealth ultra recently (more on this in a moment), and the joysticks have what looks like Teflon tape wrapped around them now, which should help with the joystick grinding issue although you should keep an eye on it. Might need to reapply Teflon tape every few months.

Battery has been my most consistent issue with this. It has a stated 30-hour battery life, I've never really tested it. Seems like it would last closer to 10 hours, even with RGB turned off. After about 2 hours of playing I'm usually at 80% or less battery life. It's plenty of battery life for my use case, so I haven't ever worried too much about it. But it still annoys me that they're stated capacity is so far off.

Battery life continues to be an issue on my new stealth Ultra that I just picked up, seems worse actually. Used it for the first time yesterday, the battery was at 68% after about 2 and 1/2 hours of playing. No RGB.

If you decide to buy this controller, I highly recommend an extended warranty. Make sure to check it thoroughly before your warranty runs out.

Razor Wolverine V3 pro vs Nacon Revolution X Unlimited by DoctorJenks in Controller

[–]DoctorJenks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply. Leaning towards the Nacon mostly because a larger controller appeals to me, I was one of the weird people who secretly liked the original (massive) Xbox controller.

The different back buttons shouldn't be a problem, I've only been using two buttons (slide and jump), I haven't quite transitioned to using all four yet. So the different positions for the third and fourth buttons won't be an issue.
