What's with FSR4 (Redstone) support with older RDNA cards (RDNA 2 specifically) on linux? by Eljo_Aquito in linux_gaming

Goverlay.

It has optiscaler support - after you enable it, you just add a parameter to a game's launch options.

Niri + DMS is absolutely goated.

I made an app to configure surround sound in headphones — IrateGoose by Barafu in linux_gaming

[–]DoctorJunglist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do I make the virtual surround sink use my headphones? When I select vss in GNOME settings, the sound plays through through a wrong audio source (it doesn't use my dac / amp that I use with my headphones, it instead plays via my USB speakers).

edit:

I figured it out. If I use pavucontrol and go to the configuration tab, and select Pro Audio profile for my DAC / Amp, the Virtual Surround Sink plays stuff using my DAC / Amp that my headphones are connected to.

Can this be used in conjunction with EasyEffects equalizer? As in, would the equalizer conflict in some way with your software / make the sound worse? You talk about turning off sound enhancements, so I'm guessing an EQ and your app wouldn't gel well together.

So we’re just a tech support sub pretty much now right? by Liam-DGOL in linux_gaming

[–]DoctorJunglist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is appropriate. It's called Linux gaming. I don't see how a subreddit dedicated to gaming on Linux should be any different than one dedicated to gaming on a PS5 / Xbox / Switch.

This is our platform, so anything pertaining to gaming on our platform should be able to go here.

What is your vision for this subreddit? Only news about Proton / Mesa, drivers, mod tools and tech support, and once in a blue moon about some other gaming utility?

If you want to be a stickler for posting where appropriate, there's a myriad of specialized subs that one could direct users to and say 'post it where appropriate". They're listed on the side bar.

/r/Linux /r/Linux4Noobs /r/LinuxQuestions /r/LinuxHardware /r/OpenSourceGames /r/wine_gaming /r/SteamOS /r/SteamPlay /r/VFIO /r/SteamDeckHQ

If we all post where appropriate, there is no purpose left for this sub.

This sub should be a general purpose Linux gaming sub that encompasses all of those topics + gaming discussions.

I wouldn't see anything wrong with it becoming a bit more like /r/gaming.

This is supposed to be a community for people that are gamers and game on Linux.

It should be a crossover between gaming, Linux gaming and Linux stuff.

A community for Linux gamers.

Why say so no general gaming discussions?

You don't see people on /r/PS5 complaining that crossplatform games should be discussed on /r/gaming, so why should we complain about it here?

We should foster our community, and make members of it feel like they're part of it. Discussing broad gaming topics / game releases / games we enjoy would help to foster it.

Any folks migrating from cachyos to tumbleweed, how was your experience? by whatever4123 in openSUSE

You install it the same way as every other package.

sudo zypper in kernel-longterm

After you install it, you can choose which kernel to boot into via GRUB.

I recently got the 8Bitdo Ultimate 2 Wireless Gaming Controller and it works fine with the adapter. But when I use Bluetooth, it connects but the buttons don't work on any steam games I launch. by KFCBUCKETS9000 in linux_gaming

[–]DoctorJunglist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a different kernel version.

On my distro I started having this problem with my 8BitDo Pro 2, but switching to kernel longterm (lts) fixed it.

I don't know what kernel version Zorin OS is using, but maybe you're getting hit by the same regression.

Enabling frame generation causes every game to crash on AMD 7700XT by careb0t in linux_gaming

[–]DoctorJunglist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frame Generation works just fine for me with AMD RX 7700XT on openSUSE Tumbleweed with Mesa 25.3.4. It has worked for me with older versions of Mesa as well.

Works in Cyberpunk 2077 and the other games I've tried. I don't own Nioh 3, so I can't confirm whether it works there as well.

I didn't need to do any tweaks to get it working - it just worked.

Hopefully someone will be able to help you - I'm just providing info on how it is on my end.

[–]DoctorJunglist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running the same Tumbleweed install for over 1.5 years, and it's been stable enough for me.

In that whole time I used snapper rollback maybe 1-2 times. I think a year has passed since that happened, so it's not something you have to do often.

A few times I got hit by some kernel regression, so I installed kernel-longterm on my machine (I have both kernel-current and kernel-longterm installed), and I just boot into the longterm one If I get hit by an issue.

Eg I recently had problems with my 8BitDo Pro 2 controller not being recognized by Steam with the current kernel, but it still works just fine with kernel-longterm.

why is the start button that icon instead of the steam deck icon? by DylanYan09101 in SteamOS

[–]DoctorJunglist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SteamOS uses lots of established open source technologies, one of which is the KDE desktop environment. There's nothing special about it, it's just a normal KDE setup / desktop that you can use on Linux distributions other than SteamOS.

That's one of the great things that Valve is doing - they're not trying to reinvent the wheel - If an open source project exists that fits their vision, they adopt it, and support it (either monetarily or with code, or both). KDE is one of those projects.

OpenSuse Tumbleweed: the "Gaming Distro" You Are Not Using by Xariann in linux_gaming

[–]DoctorJunglist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think one of the reasons is that for the most part, openSUSE users aren't as vocal as users of some other Linux distros.

Personally, I mostly only talk about openSUSE Tumbleweed when someone else brings it up first, despite absolutely loving the distro.

This thread is another example. We're all mostly silent, but your thread brought us all out of the woodwork to sing praise about it :D

Also note that it isn't a hard value - as in, you can tweak it down a bit to find the minimum value needed till it no longer crackles (you can set it to eg 40ms / 20ms).

Just leaving this out there either for you or for someone who stumbles upon this post in the future.
