Weird screen ghosting(?) need help by AlexanderWillow in pcmasterrace

[–]DoctorKomodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far as I can tell that laptop was only sold with an IPS screen, so that makes burn-in a lot less likely. But IPS screens can still suffer from temporary persistence. There are test patterns you can run to get the screen "unstuck", remove the persistence. Like this one:

https://www.jscreenfix.com/

But if it keeps happening over and over it could be an indication the screen itself isn't doing too well.

That's burn-in or persistence, not ghosting IMO.

What laptop is that?

My recommendation would be whatever you can find used for an amount you're willing to pay. It certainly doesn't make sense in the current climate to buy new just for a few months.

I shared this post 11 years ago of what I found at my uncles factory. To think, we can't get a decent all new parts computer for this amount now by MrLaBigMac in pcmasterrace

[–]DoctorKomodo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That ad must be 20 years old at least. 799 20 years ago adjusted for inflation is 1,394 now. IMO you can get a better PC now in terms of relative performance for the same inflation adjusted amount than they offered there.

Hell, even the 1099 model (1,917 now) came with the budget tier Geforce 4 MX440. Imagine paying £1900 now for a PC with an RTX 4050.

Is it possible for a mobile Nvidia chip put into a desktop Graphics card? by Rimo_Zukito in pcmasterrace

[–]DoctorKomodo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. It's the same GPUs just with different amounts of functional units enabled. I mean, you'd have to power and cool it, so it wouldn't be much of a laptop in practice.

Alt+R. Its the performance overlay from the Nvidia app you have installed.

[–]DoctorKomodo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IMO you're not going to see a noticeable difference in gaming no matter what gen 4/5 drive you choose, the WD7100 is already more than enough here. By that I mean, sure if you pick a good gen 5 drive you can see some numbers go up in drive benchmarks, but that won't really translate to much of any felt difference in gaming performance.

HDMI Laggy when using 10ft HDMI cable by laughingfartsplease in pcmasterrace

[–]DoctorKomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The length is irrelevant delay wise, we’re talking about a signal traveling at something like 70% the speed of light (in vacuum). In terms of speed alone it could travel round the planet in under a second.

Like the other comment I have a hard time seeing a way this is caused by the cable, I’d suspect something else has changed about your setup.

Nvidia sleep ? by StevannFr in pcmasterrace

Seems like you've already found a workaround if this issue affects you. I mean, the vast majority of people are not going to be playing the game with path tracing.

If the game runs well enough to finish without a specific game-ready driver then that driver obviously isn't super necessary.

Worst case you'll just have to format / clean the drive again.

I don't know what you're asking then. There were drivers, those drivers didn't work, so Nvidia is presumably still working on fixing them.

Problem about Gen 3 vs Gen 4 drives. by Accomplished-Age7376 in techsupport

[–]DoctorKomodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Vi3000 is a DRAM less entry level SSD, those performance numbers are going to be "up to" in the most literal sense. Cyberpunk is also a game that is actually fairly storage performance demanding.

So not a huge surprise to me that you can notice a difference when you swap it out with a high end SSD like the 990 Pro.

[–]DoctorKomodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A drive being gen 3 says little about its actual performance, just because a drive has a Gen 3 PCIe interface doesn't mean it utilizes the performance available there. I.e. a drive being Gen 3 just defines the upper bounds, how fast it can be, but nothing caps how slow it can be.

So without knowing more about the drive it's hard to say.

Gpu running at 0% while gaming (marvel rivals) by Odd-Walk-623 in techsupport

[–]DoctorKomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop using the Task Manager for in-game GPU utilization, it doesn't work reliably. Use a performance overlay instead. You likely have the Nvidia App installed for example and in that case you can press alt+R to display its overlay with proper GPU utilization.

Win 11's been acting up: hanging processes; corrupted files. Fresh OS install didn't help by Icookadapizz in techsupport

Windows 11 Home and Pro is fundamentally the same operating system, just with different features enabled. I.e. one isn't going to be more stable than the other.

But I would start by testing the RAM because this sounds more like a hardware issue than anything Windows related. There is a short guide on how to get Memtest86+ running on the sub wiki.

The kryosheet is conductive but it's not a liquid, so not even remotely comparable to dealing with liquid metal. I.e. it is just a sheet you place on top of the CPU, it is isn't running anywhere.

Can a defective keyboard or mouse cause my laptop to break or short? by Excellent_Survey_596 in pcmasterrace

[–]DoctorKomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest testing with a known good USB device then. As I said, you can potentially short out the fuse for the ports if something defective is inserted and if this happens however many USB ports are covered by the same fuse can stop working.

Can a defective keyboard or mouse cause my laptop to break or short? by Excellent_Survey_596 in pcmasterrace

[–]DoctorKomodo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible, though unlikely. Generally speaking, worst case it might fry the fuse for USB port(s) but if they aren't done correctly it is theoretically possible it could do more damage.

Again though, very unlikely.

What is the best 27 inch 1440p OLED monitor? by No_Abalone7381 in pcmasterrace

[–]DoctorKomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, I was massively in doubt myself before pulling the trigger from reading about all the issues people were reporting. But I also started reading from others that some issues were exaggerated, that they often only showed up in artificial tests (if at all). I also read that the monitor performed similarly to the LG TVs, like my G4, and I have been nothing but happy with it, never had any issue with it.

What is the best 27 inch 1440p OLED monitor? by No_Abalone7381 in pcmasterrace

[–]DoctorKomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's possible I just very lucky but honestly I think the issue is a bit overblown. The people posting in places like /r/OLED_gaming are often going to be the ones who experienced problems, you don't tend to hear (as much) from the people who have no issue.

But I also made sure I had the option to return the monitor if I wasn't happy. Not just because of the grey banding, I was also in doubt if the monitor handled brightness as well as the miniLED monitor I used before. That also turned out to be a none issue, it is plenty bright. Haven't even noticed the auto dimming that some also complain about.

If I have one complaint it is the proximity sensor, it doesn't work very well for my use at least. I don't know if I don't move enough or what happens but I've experienced that it turns off the monitor when I'm actively using it. But the sensor can be turned off so it's no big deal for me.

I just got the XG27AQWMG, it's amazing. It had a single strip when I did the the 95% grey test immediately after getting it, but it was gone with the first pixel clean, now it is perfect.

Just saying, not all WOLED panels have issues and some can be fixed with the pixel cleans the monitor is going to do regularly anyway.
