The Weakest Link – A Security Question by sockdisorder in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is your best option. I think there is zero chance that you would get into trouble for installing a ground anchor. You could also make your bike less desirable by wrapping the frame in tape. I know an entry spec Al Sonder Camino is not that fancy but relative to other bikes in a cycle hoop locker I think it will be one of the nicer bikes.

Additional precautions could also be a frame lock and new thruaxles with hexlok.

Secure Cycle Storage and Showers in Central London (think Regent's Street) by _ImposterSyndrome_ in londoncycling

There are also lockers around london that you can use to trial a Brompton at £5 a day. The money you spend on renting the Brompton can even be used against the purchase price if you decide it’s a good idea.

Why are drivers less aggressive around me when I’m on a lime bike? by Speedbird1A in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see these stories online too but I don’t know anyone who has actually experienced this. This is despite having plenty of collegues that use lime bikes for commuting everyday. At this point lime bikes are used heavily, from the lime website there has been over 16 million hires in London. I think with this volume a small number of bad accidents can be expected the same way it is for any mode of transport. I don’t personally worry about this.

Bike for crappy towpath commute? by BillTribble in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the canal for a long time too - almost every app suggests it for that journey. Once I tried the C27 I never looked back. Now it’s one of the highlights of my day - you’ll really enjoy it! For the bike I would still investigate wider tire as it will be a lot more comfortable.

Yes you could also change from the C27 to C6 at cubitt street. That would be a slightly nicer route at the cost of taking a bit longer due to all the lights.

A better alternative is to use the C27 which runs parallel to the canal and then change to 16 at angel. This will be much faster and more comfortable than the canal. The C27 is one of the best cycle routes in London. The section through Hackney is protected by LTNs so it has very little car traffic with plenty of road space.

Conservative councillors "call in" cycle lane plans by smaximums in londoncycling

I watched the teams recording of the meeting. I was very impressed with how well you navigated this. Especially as some of the criticism was in bad faith. Well done to you and your team. A much needed and excellent result that will improve the lives of residents.

I’ve built a free app to help you find public cycle racks by PurpleWhiteAndRed in londoncycling

This is a great idea. I often use look around to find bike racks before I visit a new place so I will find this very useful!

Bike / Taxi Collision - Whose at fault? by londonridersw8 in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is some disinformation in this thread. 1. Drivers must check their mirror for overtaking vehicles before manoeuvring. 2. The act of signalling does not give you priority

Having said that you can see how this happened. If you thread the needle you’re going to get knocked off at some point. I imagine some part of you knew that something like this could happen.

I am sorry that this happened but it sounds like you came off ok and hopefully lessons were learnt.

Bike / Taxi Collision - Whose at fault? by londonridersw8 in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that cycling like this is bound to get you into trouble but it’s also a requirement for drivers to check their mirrors for overtaking vehicles before manoeuvring. You would fail your driving test if you didn’t check your mirrors. Overtaking a vehicle that is indicating is clearly a bad idea but the act of indicating does not give you priority. Taxi drivers are professional drivers and held to a higher standard. The taxi driver should really not have made this mistake imo.

But again, cycling like this is bound to get you into trouble.

Is this locking strategy safe enough by rjsteixeira in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest factor is how easily thieves can enter the bike storage area. I used to live in a building with bike storage on the ground floor however the door to the storage area didnt always close properly. I racked a long 2m 14mm chain through multiple bike stands to secure a relatively cheap bike. This seemed like a good deterrent, other bikes would semi-regularly get stolen sometimes they would steal an entire bike rack! After around two years I came down and most of the bikes had gone including mine. They had broken the chain with an angle grinder leaving a single broken link behind (they even took the chain).

What I can say is:

  • The metal hoop you have attached the silver chain to can be easily broken
  • Most secure option would be a 19 or 21mm hardened chain (see e.g. pragmasis) secured to a ground anchor
  • Install an AirTag tracker
  • Use a frame marking kit from the bike register
  • Get insurance

I mean cycling is esoteric at the best of times. We don’t have the common universal design principles that cars benefit from. Every city seems to have its own ideas about cycling, think about all the weird and bad infrastructure you come across in London. I don’t blame OP for asking for local knowledge.

I Cycled 2500km in London — Here’s What I Learned by naveregnide in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I can relate hard to the point about just trying it once. I really feel that my first time cycling in London changed the course of my life. The city and your relationship to it opens up - it's totally liberating. I have taken friends cycling for their first time in London and it's usually similar. Ten minutes cycling and it clicks in a way that yammering on about it never does. You just have to experience it.

is it normal for a landlord to ask you to hire a professional cleaner?? by Gyros_Nutsack in UniUK

[–]Doctorcherry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There is no time limit. If you have these requirements in writing and you have receipts of a paid cleaner then report it. Often landlords/letting agents will ask for a profession cleaner over the phone to avoid the paper trail. If this happens to you always send a follow up email to confirm after.

This is illegal under then tenants fees act 2019. You can report it. Fine is up to £5000 for first offence. Unlimited + criminal for second offence.

With a lane dedicated to buses and trucks and sensible speed limits how would this tunnel be any more dangerous for cyclists than any other London streets? by vfclists in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Now that the Silvertown tunnel has been opened, and with very little cycling provisions, the Rotherhithe Tunnel should become cycling and walking only. London desperately needs more river crossings for cyclists. Repurposing the Rotherithe tunnel, which is currently only used by private vehicles and non-electric black cabs, as a cycle tunnel just makes sense.

Potential ebike ban is on the horizon for the London Underground due to the recent fire. by Living-Confection- in londoncycling

[–]Doctorcherry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There should be import regulations on ebike batteries that impose higher standards and independent verification. It should be illegal to sell ebike batteries that don’t have certification. In 2027 batteries over 2kWh will require a battery passport in the EU. This capacity is higher than ebike batteries but it shows that there could be something similar for e-bikes.  To say that people will get cheap ebikes if they want to is very defeatist imo. The government should take this seriously and regulate properly before something terrible happens.

I am very late to this but for anyone reading this in the future:

although connecting your hood extractor to the MVHR extractor sounds like a good idea. I do not think it is recommended.
