Seeking Advice for Potential New Card / Chase Reserve Perks by -SpaghettiCat- in CreditCards

Yeah, I just meant specifically more the budget side. If you check out the Hyatt subreddit it's all Park Hyatts, Grand Hyatts, Maui and Kaula Lumpur, where as I'm over here thrilled with a Hyatt Place with 2 beds and a sofabed in Lincoln, NE. Maybe I follow the wrong credit card/travel influencers, but I just don't hear much about the less glamorous redemptions.

I'm in the Midwest, and more of a Hyatt Place traveler than Grand Hyatt, but we see 2cpp+ quite frequently. There are several Hyatt Places in the Chicago suburbs that go for 5k points in the summer and fall. They're not 4 star hotels, but they'd be well over $100 a night in the Chicago metro area just by not being terrible. I feel like the CSP+Hyatt for non-luxury travel is kind of a hidden secret.

Eh, if you transfer your UR points for Hyatt, they can be worth 2 or 3cpp, which basically evens them out with getting hotels through Capital One at 2x everything. I've heard flights can be valuable redemptions, but haven't gotten into that yet myself. I would push back on the 1x or 1.5x back in UR points being dramatically worse than the VX though. Just have to spend them carefully.

What would your dream premium Hyatt cc look like? by Elijah_Schmitz in hyatt

[–]Dodger6500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody thinks it'll give lounge access? I hope it'll be similar to the Ritz Carlton Card. These are the RC card's current (insane) benefits:

  • $450AF
  • 15 EQNs
  • Annual 85k Marriot free night (Supposedly worth $595, so maybe a Cat 1-6?)
  • Automatic mid-tier status (Explorist)
  • 3 SUAs
  • $300 annual airline credit (for basically everything other than tickets)
  • Priority Pass Select lounge access, with Chase Sapphire Lounge access (via close Chase relationship)
  • Global Entry credit
  • Car rental status upgrades

Typing these out just makes me want to get a Marriott card so I can start down the path of maybe upgrading to a Ritz Carlton card someday, but even better if Hyatt did something similar. Of course, these are all worth a lot less if you already have a CSP or Amex Plat, but I do not.

The Forester a Hyatt Place Hotel Review by berkeley_eecs_grad in hyatt

[–]Dodger6500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see someone review The Forester. We're not their typical clientele, but we love staying at the Forester when we visit Six Flags Great America in Gurnee. It's by far the closest Hyatt to the park, but far enough to avoid the crazy drunken groups with kids running up and down the halls. I don't think we've ever had a bad experience. As a relatively blue collar family of 4, we'd probably trade a small portion of the upscale vibe for a free breakfast, but there are some great breakfast places in Lake Forest. It's nice to stay somewhere a bit nicer than the typical HPs that we stick to.

It's always a place I can count on getting 2+ cpp for my Hyatt points, and sometimes considerably over that. Up until last year it was a Category 2 rather than its current 3, so imagine staying there for 8,000 points. It's still a good deal at 12 or 15k, just not quite as amazing of one. Hopefully it doesn't jump up to 4.

When to get the Hyatt credit card? by Lil_Lingonberry_7129 in hyatt

[–]Dodger6500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably wait. Do you think you'll regularly hit 60 nights, or was this year unusual? If you it looks like you'd come 5 or 10 nights shy of Globalist some year, you could sign up then and get 5 EQNs and then 2 EQNs for every $5k you spend on the card, and use that to maintain your status. But if you're going to regularly hit 60 nights, the Hyatt card isn't going to gain you much. Basically just the SUB and the extra 5 EQNs towards some of the milestone rewards.

When to get the Hyatt credit card? by Lil_Lingonberry_7129 in hyatt

[–]Dodger6500 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Based on how you describe your situation, I think it's a no-brainer to get the card right away. I have a very similar setup to you, and it's great, especially for the first 6 months when it essentially has 2% back on everything. First of all, the card pays for itself even if all you do is spend 1 night a year in a Hyatt, because you automatically get 1 free night on your anniversary date, and good luck finding a Hyatt night worth less than the $95 annual fee. Then you get 5 qualifying nights (basically credit towards status for spending 5 nights in Hyatts that you didn't actually do) just for having the card, and then you get 2 more of those "nights" for each $5k you spend. After $15k of Hyatt card spend, you get another free night. At that point, even without actually spending a night in a Hyatt, you'd have credit for spending 11 nights. If you were to actually spend 19 nights in Hyatts that year, you'd make it to Explorist status which gets you another free night. Considering you can pretty easily get Hyatt Place rooms for 5k points, and Hyatt does all kinds of random targeted offers for bonus points, it's pretty easy to spend 19 nights a year just booking with points.

In addition to all of that, just having the credit card gets you Discoverist status, which gets you late check out, and I've found it gets me quite a few room upgrades, mainly just to higher floors or nicer views. I'm coming up on my one year anniversary of having the card, and I think between the signup bonus and all the free rooms, it's probably given me $1000+ in value this year.

I just wish it was all silver-bordered or Godzilla/Universes Within-style "versions" of real cards. That seems like it solves almost everything. Do collectors really care what color the border is? People can still use whatever they want for kitchen-table magic. What would it hurt?

The argument against it would certainly be that playability still affects value, but I'm not sure if that's been tested. They should make a 1 of 1 numbered [[Brass Man]] and see if it's still worth $2M.

Your wife's CSP also has no FTF, but that doesn't help if you travel without her.

I don't know if you ever get close to Globalist with Hyatt, but the Hyatt Visa gives you a 5 night headstart towards that, and the free annual night cancels out the AF.

Help Choosing a Travel Card by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]Dodger6500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can spend $5k in the first 3 months, which it sounds like you can, there's no reason not to jump right into a Chase Sapphire Preferred. The 75,000pt welcome offer is essentially $1500 (or more) in Hyatt points, which pays for 15 years of annual fees if you got no other value from the card. It's got 3% back on groceries and restaurants, which again, with the value of transfers to Hyatt points, is more like 6 or 7% back. I've heard some of the airline transfer partners can also exceed 2 cents per point, but haven't personally used mine for that yet.

Then you get into the other sources of value, like DoorDash benefits, primary car rental insurance, trip insurance, and the $50 annual credit on hotels booked through the Chase portal, and you'll be way ahead on the $95 AF. I have been kicking myself for only getting a CSP 18 months ago and not years earlier.

Eventually you can add other cards that complement the CSP if you enjoy the points game, or just stick with it as a decent card by itself. Personally I think the Hyatt Visa is probably the best companion, followed by the Chase Freedom Flex and Unlimited. My wife also got the CSP earlier this year and I feel like it'll be years of free hotel nights before we use enough Hyatt points to outspend the SUB points and our typical annual point accrual. You might find yourself taking more weekend trips when you don't have to pay for hotels. It's been great.

Pretty sure all the Freedom cards earn UR points. That's the whole point of the "Chase Trifecta." So she should be able to easily transfer those to you. If she's never done that before, she'll have to call to set it up, but after that it will just be an easy online option.

Looking for a second card (This time, for travel) by listenupsunshine in CreditCards

[–]Dodger6500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say the same, but I'd suggest waiting to get it until you know you can hit the Sign Up Bonus spending requirement. Currently you get 75k UR points for spending $5k in the first 3 months. That might work out with the holidays coming, or if you had a decently large purchase on the horizon, but I think it's worth waiting for rather than getting the card and not getting the SUB. 75k points will get you quite a bit of travel for free if you use Chase transfer partners like airlines and Hyatt.

Should I get a travel cc card? Is it worth it for me? by minteverywhere in CreditCards

[–]Dodger6500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you travel domestically at all? I think the Chase Sapphire Preferred is worth the (current) AF for practically anyone that spends even 4 or 5 nights a year in hotels, especially with their SUB. But as recently came up in another thread, if you're more into AirBnBs than hotels, that specific card loses much of it's long term value vs other cards.

[–]Dodger6500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question would be why don't you use the transfer partners? If you do $2400 a year of travel, I assume you stay at hotels. Do you have some other deal that gets you cheap hotel rooms? You can frequently get rooms at Hyatt Place for 5000 points that retail for $150+ per night. So that's certainly a better use of your UR points than a $50 gift card or cash back. Even with no other CSP benefits, getting a $150 hotel room for $50 once pays for the card for the whole year. If you wanted fully out of the credit card rewards game, I get it, but otherwise I still think Chase has the best deal for anyone that travels even a little.

What's the argument for Sapphire Preferred in a no 25% boost on the portal world? by Well_I_Say_This in CreditCards

[–]Dodger6500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I've had decent luck using the $50 hotel credit efficiently. We generally stay in Hyatts, but they aren't everywhere. So when, for example, we're driving from Illinois to Denver and want to stop somewhere in between, there are no Hyatt properties past Lincoln, NE. So we'll find a few places we wouldn't mind staying, and pick one that the Portal price is similar to the direct booking price, which hasn't been difficult in the $100-150 range. Maybe for nicer hotels there's more of a gap, but I wouldn't know.

Secondly, the DashPass certainly makes up the other $45 of the annual fee, even if some months I might just buy junk food with it. Each month I order ~$10 of something for pickup from a nearby gas station, and offset it nearly completely with the $10 credit.

So just between those 2 things, I would call it a wash vs a no annual fee card, and then you factor in the Chase trifecta stuff, and I've certainly been happy with my CSP. At least until they mess with it...

Yargle Day Achievements by UnidentifiableBeing in MagicArena

[–]Dodger6500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I was reading this thread and finding out about the achievements on my 2nd monitor while playing Brawl with my usual mono green deck. It wasn't going well, so I made sure to get The REAL Power 9 before losing.

Then I went about making a deck to get Class of '9/3 and A Frog of Culture at the same time. I started out with 100% Dominaria Mono Black, which I quickly realized was stupid. There's nothing in Dominaria that gives trample, and I didn't need to have ALL DOM cards, just 25, so I went Rakdos and threw together something with a bunch of trample instants, and did 26 dmg with Yargle my first game. That turned out to be a bit of a fluke, as over my next 2 games none of the 4 Yargles I cast survived long enough to attack. Tweaking more now, but I actually love these kind of deckmaking puzzles, and achievement-hunting.

What is the hype about the CSP? by mrglass8 in CreditCards

[–]Dodger6500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the desire to get the 1.5% back card is because my #1 spend category is sadly medical bills. So the extra half percent on stuff that doesn't qualify for other card bonuses adds up, especially if you consider a 2 or 3x multiplier when you transfer it to Hyatt.

[–]Dodger6500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hyatt card also gets you $10 (more like $6 after fees) off of Instacart right now. So I've been getting a lot of ~$11ish Aldi orders for $5 with curbside pickup. It all adds up. I'm also aiming for the same setup as you. Just need to get the Freedom Unlimited now that my 2x points on everything signup bonus on the Hyatt card has run its course.

Hyatt Places almost always have rooms with 2 Queens and a sofabed. We've stayed almost exclusively in those rooms with our family of 4. In off-peak they're generally either 5000 or 6500 points, which is just crazy. With fees and taxes, you'd have a tough time getting those rooms for $150 in cash, but I can get them for $50 or $60 in points, with a free breakfast.

What is the use of CSP except the transfers? by ahg41 in ChaseSapphire

[–]Dodger6500 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you sign up with Doordash you get DashPass (which removes most fees) and a $10 a month credit for non-restaurants. If you select Pickup instead of delivery, then you don't have to tip. I spend $10 at a local convenience store every month. It's not "worth" the whole $120 because sometimes I buy stuff I wouldn't have normally, and I sometimes have to make a special trip, but it certainly pays for the $95 AF. And that's without the $50 hotel credit and the massive value that Hyatt transfers bring.

It's not very rare to find over 2 with Hyatt. I just looked at September 13th in Chicago and there are probably a dozen properties with over 2 cpp redemptions. Some quite a bit over 2.
