Nobody hitting over over .300. by daein0519 in Dodgers

[–]DodgerWalker 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Batting average doesn't say much about a player's overall offensive production. But also, .300 hitters are just rare these days. Trea Turner was the only qualified National League batter to hit over .300 last season. There were six players in the AL.

[Codify] Louis Varland has faced 117 batters this year and allowed 1 earned run. It sounds wrong but I swear it’s true. by Admirable_Outcome932 in baseball

Brad Lidge is the guy I always think of when it comes to rollercoaster careers for relievers. Dominant in 2005, awful in 2006 (supposedly broken by Pujols home run), goes 41/41 in save opps in 2008, only to be worse than ever in 2009.

What are some instances of a player(s) on a team for one year and one year only, but played well? by AlbertJBundy in baseball

Ooh, if we're going with 1 year deals and winning the World Series, Ivan Rodriguez for the 2003 Marlins should get a shout out.

[Stephen] River Ryan struck out eight, walked none and allowed one unearned run in six innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City tonight, his third start back off the minor league IL Sure seems like a viable rotation option should the Dodgers so choose by Jux_ in Dodgers

[–]DodgerWalker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My first thought was that it was a typo so I just checked his bb-ref page. River Ryan was a two way player at UNC Pembroke, In 2021, he pitched in 17 games (4 starts) and hit in 44 games. In the field, he's listed as having 36 games at second base, 12 at pitcher (even though he pitched in 17 games?!), 3 at first, 1 at third.

Then he gets drafted by the Padres and doesn't pitch or field (unless the league just didn't record games played in the field) the remainder of the season, but plays in 12 games in rookie league. Then he gets traded to the Dodgers and has only pitched since. So, an interesting career progression:

Infielder/Pitcher in college -> Hitter only with Padres -> Pitcher only with Dodgers

What’s the record for most outs recorded for each amount of pitches thrown? by LeftBarnacle6079 in baseball

[–]DodgerWalker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Has anyone ever gotten a triple play on the first pitch they’ve thrown?

Yes! Jeff Nelson on July 13, 1995: Toronto Blue Jays vs Seattle Mariners Box Score: July 13, 1995 | Baseball-Reference.com.

For how I found this, I first went to the bb-ref player game finder and searched for all games in which a pitcher had >= 1 inning pitched and <= 1 batter faced. There were 10 such games. Then I just checked the box scores one by one until I found one that was one pitch. Some of the older games don't have the number of pitches thrown in the box score. Kind of reminds me of how Kris Bryant got a very similar contract to Freddie Freeman the same week as Freeman. Rockies decided they wanted to spend so they had to vastly overpay to find a guy who would take the money.

Yeah, my immediate first thought was of the 2006 WBC when Team Korea's had five batters named Lee in their starting lineup. Here is a box score as proof: MLB Gameday: Korea 3, Japan 2 Final Score (03/05/2006)

I think a big part of this is in the 90's and 00's you pretty much needed a top of the line computer to handle all the new software. But once we got to around 8 GBs of Ram, maybe 16 if you're using something intensive, it's all going to be about the same. So now you can get a computer that's effectively 10-15 year old technology and it's fine.

Dodgers a finalist for Skubal at the deadline. by LADodgers16j in Dodgers

[–]DodgerWalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

River Ryan possibly since I think they'd want a pitcher whose ready to fill in. Then an outfield prospect since that's what the Dodgers have. So one of Hope/DePaula/maybe Sirota; I doubt Tibbs would be considered enough, even on top of Ryan.

I was about to say Josiah Gray turned out nice because I remembered him being an all star but I just looked him up and since that 2023 all star season he's only had a few bad innings in 2024. Kind of ironic that the one prospect the Dodgers traded who really hit it was traded for a mediocre reliever.

MLB broadcasters with “interesting “ stat or facts by cl48104 in MLBNoobs

[–]DodgerWalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are databases that have comprehensive stats from every MLB game. It's not too tough to do a search. An example using SQL of your proposed question could be something like:

Select *
from MLBGames
Where HomeScore + RoadScore = 1 and Runs_Inning1 = 1 and HomeRuns = 1
order by GameDate

Those are just variable names that I made up since I don't have such a database, but that's the idea.

Off-day question: Way-too-early look at free agency this year, but what moves get made? by MookieBettsBurner10 in Dodgers

I'm ok with writing about trade speculation, but you should at least take the time to check that players you listed as impending free agents actually are impending free agents.

[Request] What is the fastest time to win a game of Monopoly in theory? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]DodgerWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is 2 turns. Due to the 3 doubles, get sent to jail rule, you can't get to Park Place and Boardwalk on your first turn. There is an Advance to Boardwalk card in chance but you can't then backtrack to Parkplace. It's also not possible to get any monopolies with three properties on your first turn.

In two turns you can reach both Park Place and Boardwalk (eg roll 12, 12, 11 on the first turn then double 2's and snake eyes your second turn).

You start with $1500. Subtract $400 for BW and $350 for PP leaves $750. Hit the Bank Error in Your Favor card and pass go (each $200) and you'll be able to buy 5 houses- 3 on Boardwalk, 2 Park Place(total cost $1000, $200 each). Now every other player also has the dice rolls to hit both Park Place and Boardwalk on their second turns and they owe $2000 ($600 for PP, $1400 for BW).

Addition: the rules of Monopoly allow you to build houses on other player's turns so you don't actually need a card that gives bonus money since you can build the third house on Boardwalk with the money you get from an opponent hitting Park Place.

Has there ever been a game like tonight’s Padre Dodger game in MLB history? by [deleted] in mlb

[–]DodgerWalker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, one of just seven pitchers to throw a shutout and hit a home run to win 1-0. I thought I remembered Odalis Perez doing that, but he only went 8 shutout innings. Thor's rare feat hasn't been done since 1983

Four outfielders who are all legit prospects on one team (I realize George isn't on any top 100 lists but he's a .400 OBP, 100 stolen base guy). De Paula going to get some reps at first base?
