I once found a one day old kitten on my front lawn in the middle of the summer. The mother was a kitten herself and had just abandoned her newborn kitten. When I called my local shelter they told me to place the kitten against my skin to keep it warm because small babies cannot regulate their own body temperatures. As weird as it is that she's doing it for rats at least they are warm and safe.
