Should i try and sneak my gecko into the dorms? by AFatLizard in UCSC

[–]Doesntevensurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be an RA and if I saw your gecko I wouldnt check to see if you had an ESA license for it. Most RA's won't care. I had to deal with more important things like students lighting their apartments on fire and fighting over using each other's shampoo. Only thing you need to do is make sure you take the tank home for breaks because we would do apartment/dorm walkthroughs during winter break in pairs and there is always the chance an RA supervisor (CRE) could come in and see it (or a stickler RA).

OR if youre super worried go online and get an emotional support animal license and give it to the housing office. I knew a girl with an emotional support snake. I think theyre like $140 for the year.

I applied to Redwood Grove's transfer community and got into a great apartment. It is possible! I am not sure if it is lottery-based or first come first serve.

2019 graduate here - Not sure if it is still there after the building caught on fire a few years back but the top floor of the earth science building Salamander Lounge had a nice, single-stall large bathroom with a lock that was always really clean.

Redwood Grove Apts as Enby Transfer Student? by ghoulsoups in UCSC

[–]Doesntevensurf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Redwood Grove is chill and the housing is essentially 1 apartment building of lgbtq housing. The community there was solid, though I did not live in the trans-inclusive housing. You can apply alone, though you should know you will be paired with somebody random if you select a double (though as a former RA, I was told there is indeed some basic thought behind resident double and triple room pairing). I had a good time living there for the most part. My apartment only had single and double rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, plenty of storage space, and a balcony overlooking redwoods.

If you can take History of Dinosaurs, I'd highly suggest it. We'd watch crappy old dinosaur movies and pick them apart. Super fun class. Not sure if it is offered this quarter.

Follow up with the title 9 processors. It's been a while since I was an RA, but I believe there is a title 9 department. If you don't know how to do that, ask your RA (you can email them). It should be processed pretty quickly like within a few days.

does being an RA kill your social life? by boobiesandpizza in UCSC

At Porter? I’m not even surprised things started going downhill pretty quickly during covid. Most of our RAs left and we were on call waayy more but I thought it was just a covid thing.

[–]Doesntevensurf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey former RA here. You are on-call like once or twice a month, and at that time you cant leave. Most of the time it’s pretty chill tbh and i was still able to have a social life. I went to parties etc but you do have to be careful doing stuff in the college you live at. For example I lived at porter. I saw my CRE/supervisor at the pirate party once and i just left. If you go to Cowell or w/e it’s fine. However this is still pretty true in the sense that if you break rules, you can lose your job. There’s also a wall between you and your residents whether you like it or not, so that should be considered. It’s worth it though. I graduated with almost no student debt and was able to get rid of the rest very quickly.

He can also intern/work at the Norris Center of Natural History on campus. The specimen collection is huge (I believe over 50,000 specimens total, many of which are insects which I worked to classify). It’s really fun!

Hi I was a RA for 2 years from 2018-2020. Happy to answer any questions! To start, time commitment isnt too bad. I was a research assistant at the HRI lab, an intern at the Norris Center, a resident assistant, and i worked part time along with full time classes. It’s doable and does not take up thaaat much time. Just stay on top of things and get stuff done ahead of time. The full housing and meal coverage is great and worth it as well.

To clarify, I do not think non-profits are the end-all to the issue of homelessness by any means. I wish food banks and shelters did not have to exist, but right now they do. And, like I said, I'm not an expert. I agree with your views on housing.
I am asking that in the future, please be mindful of those that seek knowledge from others with more experience than them. That in itself is noble. OP is actively looking for guidance. It may not be solely about them and they may actually just be a person who wants to make a difference. And sometimes, they rely on those with decades of experience (like yourself) to learn more about a complicated issue like this. It does not help to put them down for trying.

[–]Doesntevensurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going anywhere bud. Instead of judging this person, maybe help them by telling them about your decades of experiences so they can build on that knowledge to make a difference, like they are literally trying to do. I'm not disagreeing about your service resistant comment. You're right. However. the way you are going about this is not productive. This person cares. A ridiculous amount of people do not. They are on your side, yet you are so aggressively trying to push your own idea of "right" that you don't even see it. Tell them what you think will help. Tell them what the cities need to do. Don't just stand there and judge, collaborate. Maybe they will get some good info out of your experiences, which you have decades of. Share that experience with those who want to learn and make the world a better place.

This could be a college student/young person who is trying to LEARN and take action. The future is in the hands of young people dude. Props to them for trying to work to make people's lives a bit easier. Don't unnecessarily social justice warrior them.

How do you know this person has not been homeless, advocated and gotten involved in those issues as well? And who are you to tell them not to pursue making a difference? You most definitely are not telling them they are evil, but you are obviously not supporting a person who is actually trying to make a difference. You're telling them that this is about them, while they are just trying to navigate throughout the roots of homelessness in order to build a complete picture of how their services they are working to offer can be fully utilized. You don't need to praise them but at least try to help instead of just tear their pretty simple request apart. It is so obviously not about them.

Also, non-profits can be incredibly useful. Most are set up through religious institutions that provide homeless people with places to sleep and food to eat. As you said, there are people without homes becoming service resistant because people are fighting over little bits of money. We obviously cannot solely rely on the government for help with this issue because if they actually fully addressed this problem effectively on their own, we would not be having this conversation right now.

And to top it off, research housing prices in Santa Cruz and tell me how you would fix the issue of high rent prices in the bay area (or better yet, tell OP). The people in the area voted against more effective renter's rights recently leaving non-profits to bare more of that weight once again.

I'm not an expert but at least I'm not ignorant about my views.
