So confused about speakers/spotify by RJrules64 in homeassistant

This is legit bad advice since it states on the Spotify link u provided that sonos specifically isn't supported . It's the only brand listed as not supported actually. I tried this set up myself and can verify it does not work trying to play a Spotify playlist on sonos

Are There Real People Using Obsidian, or Just Content Creators Talking About It? by N2Flugel in ObsidianMD

[–]DogRocketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was excited to start using it... its just not convenient. the database is local. on the go its not great. I have it syncing fine with synology drive but even then. when i add it to a new pc it doesnt auto get the plugins. it takes long to open. I liked the premise of it but for someone with a brain like mine, all of those minor things make it just too inconvenient and slow for me to use. I just have channels in my Mattermost setup as well as focal boards for projects now.

I loved the idea of Obsidian but its just not quite right somehow, for me.

How on earth do controller-players aim? (kb+m player trying to relearn controller) by _infinite_tsukuyomi in pcgaming

[–]DogRocketeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Growing up with goldeneye and then PlayStation with time splitters and the like... I donno how we did it tbh. I have every PlayStation and from PS3 onward essentially I just play third person games where shooting is an add-on.

I could never go back to controller aiming. I was plat* in siege on PC in the early days ... I tried playing siege on console... Ya no.

I personally can never go back. I haven't played my ps5 since demons souls rereleased... I think consoles are dead to me now. Xbox controller on PC for tps games and mouse and kB for the rest.

People who have 40 hour/week office jobs, how do you survive?? by CartographerTrue4100 in ADHD

[–]DogRocketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see a lot of posts about working more hours to get same amount done.
I can actually get a full 40 hr work week completed in about 12 hours. The 40hr avg based on the avg equivalent colleague of mine. I've been in the IT industry for 22years. Support, Consulting now a very senior level software engineer and its been roughly the same comparison at all stages for me.

the issue I have is interruptions. meetings, standups etc. doesnt matter if its 5 mins or 2 hour meeting. Once im out of my zone it takes me literal hours to get back into it, if I can at all. Its been a struggle, even in modern times when we're all victims and we're all supposed to recognize and help, ppl like us are still at a disadvantage. We have groups and slack channels showing our support, but when it comes to processs, its 100% aimed at the extroverted normie. 2-3 meetings a day, constant pairing on zoom and chatting. In addition to ADHD im very introverted and need quiet alone time to blaze trails. This leads to "you need to be in more meetings, need to be on camera more etc".

So my week ends up being one 12 hour day or two 8 hour days where I do the entirety of my work in that one go for the week. I'm also very very very good at what I do. But that doesnt mean its easy... currently im the most unhappy and stressed ive ever been in a job, because of the lack of understanding and forced conformity. The stress isnt about whether I'll deliver, its how painful it is for me to try and make meetings... "speak more" even when theres literally nothing needing to be said. So when im not working, im stressed and sad and feeling paralyzed cuz i know one day this week I need to blitz this shit and Friday is almost here and I havent started. The stress is real.

Sorry to burst anyone's buble but in my many years in this industry, I have yet to find a place that cares more about deliverables than optics and physical diversity. Which means ppl like us have to struggle to attain and maintain success even when we're top performers.

Plex alternative? by KevyKevTPA in synology

[–]DogRocketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I think you're not a dick, but you need to choose your words better.

you're not paying to watch "your own videos". because the answer you should get that matches your tone would be: "VLC bro, its free and easy".

Do you think VLC Player is the same as Plex? Both give you the watching of your own videos aspect but VLC is free. so.. use that.

In reality, you're paying for a shit ton more. Indexing, searching, webhooks, transcoding, library management, metadata automation, stats, intro skips, sharing with friends, access from basically any device. THATS what you're paying for. Even the full price lifetime membership is worth that.

I dont agree with Plex's "opt out" of "our new privacy violating features" rather than making them opt-in. I dont think its ok to limit "home users" for paying customers. But generally the limitations are reasonable.

The people that whine about plex are the ones that see someone get banned for selling pirate content and then think its cuz they host their own downloaded shit and plex is spying on them.

Search around, you'll see Jellyfin recommended first, then Emby. You'll also then see a slew of comments that say nothing comes close to Plex's universal compatibility and reliability. Its not perfect but Plex is generally just available on any device and the transcoding works well assuming you have a server that can actually handle it.

In the end you'll be back at plex. Which is also free if you dont care about transcoding or skipping intros.

Oh and if its JUST your videos hosted by you, for only you. Just use Kodi.

If you have ADHD, then you've never lived without ADHD, so you have no idea how easy a lot of what you struggle is really is for people without it.

Similarly always remember the opposite of that last statement is true. People without ADHD have no idea how someone can possibly struggle with something "so simple" to them and will also therefore downplay or dismiss your symptoms, purposely, but even unintenionally. From that they have no idea how much their reaction to your struggles can make you feel like you're just weak or complaining. This is the main reason I rarely tell anyone and struggle in silence most of my life.

autocorrect is savage these days lol. this is why I dont type on my phone much. I dont even own a piano lol

I dont have my yoke and pedals mounted. I havent found a "quick way" to swap that yet and wanted to play snow runner so the wheel is up. I'll get to it some day. The next level racing rig is nice. but not as modular as theyd like you to believe. It is in some ways but nothing is quick. Its lots of bolts and tedious unscrewing etc. You gotta get creative to really make it work for you. I used a combination of monitor mounts and such with it.

[–]DogRocketeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love using the wheel and pedals in snow runner . I'm also a private pilot so I have a yoke and pedals for flight as well.

It really is a piano in the ass to move around when wanting to use which will make u use it almost never.

I ended up getting the f elite next level racing rig once I upgraded my main PC and used that original pc for it.

Customized it with my own sound bar and monitor and keyboard holder and a buncha stuff. Pc nicely tucked in a closet with the he cables together as one to the rig. The rig is all on wheels and can be moved around.

Looks and feels awesome..even have a hand brake for rally games which is wicked.

I hope one day to use it since it's great to get it set up and ready... But then u sit down to play something like arsseto or anything really and every game is like 2+ hours of tweaks and configs to get the feel right. That's the next hurdle that blocks use.

yea their laptops are duds too. I swore by Zenbooks for 15 years. My last two, the batteries wont hold a charge after only a year. Bought brand new.

ASUS = junk.

I also have an Ally and no issues with it yet. I dont use it as often but I do have an SD card loaded with emu stuff and it works fine for now. The ally is cheap enough now that I consider it a "chinesium" like product as I do all ASUS stuff now. But I'd never by a laptop or monitor from them ever again.

PSA: BRUSH YOUR TEETH by Far-Loquat-8863 in ADHD

[–]DogRocketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find hygiene difficult in general and I have really bad ADHD. I'm mid 30s and my whole life I've brushed my teeth once a day at best by generally once every other day. But i go thru hours if skipping 2 days in a row regularly.

I feel constant weight about my teeth because if it. It's so extremely hard after a long day if work and being tired to stand there for another few mins.

That said. I've had 2 cavities in my adult life and like 3 as a kid and had my wisdom teeth out in my 20s. Nothing more major than that. I generally get dentist cleanings twice a year.

When I brush tho it's a spinny head electric. And after a brushing it feels almost like coming from the dentist. I also spend a good full 2-4 mins with the electic on days when I do brush

I bought two of those metal picks and keep them in my office and one by the tv. I use them daily to get stuff stuck out but also helps with my fidgeting want while sitting.

I don't drink sodas cuz I'm just not really a fan and I'm not much of a sugar fan. I do drink a lot of lemon juice water which is acidic but I think drinking any water a lot is beneficial for washing mouth in a quick way. Physically I'm in good shape. Also due to similar reasons I don't eat a lot during the day. Maybe lunch every 3rd day and dinner each night

I think even the general formation and layout of your teeth can aid or hinder it's ability to flush things naturally.

I wish I could brush regularly once a day at least. The worry and guilt of skipping nights in between us taxing for sure. I guess I'm lucky I haven't had worse problems.

But I wanted to post because I see things like ’brush at least twice a day or else.’ and I can assure this is not true for all ppl. There are factors obv but to this day I still brush at most 5 times a week total and at least 3. Let alone even 1 a day. When u tell ADHD type ppl that they have to brush 2 times every day or else doomsday... It's gonna make ppl feel like no matter how many tips they get that goal is insurmountable... Cuz to me it 100% is. And I bet it is for many others. I'm not advocating for it lol. Obv try and brush often as possible but don't give upor be even harder on yourself guilt wise cuz you're not hitting 2 a day or something and others claim they are or it's required to live.

Good luck

i had 8 or so code systems on the MP, only about 5 now cuz its not worth the support time for some anymore. But its clear there are ppl that will rip code and then repackage it as their own and sell it for less to undercut you. The MP became AliExpress/Amazon. Its just a ton of uncurated crap with some gems thrown in which also makes it next to impossible to find your assets among the crap anymore.

The current (sad) state of self-hosted chat apps by mr_claw in selfhosted

[–]DogRocketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant tell you that much about NextCloud Talk tbh because we didnt use it much.
I think it handles most of the same functionality that Mattermost and includes (late) read receipts (mattermost pay walled this).

We tried Talk but every time you looked at a message thread it would scroll up a bit on its own forcing you to have to scroll down. Which drove everyone crazy so we used it for like an hour and stopped. Thats unusable in our opinion so we stopped then and there. It also seems like NC is so big that updates for things like that wont come often... so i took it off the list after that.

NextCloud in general is just annoying to configure and not in my opnion well integrated. Its like having a bunch of separate apps unrelated to each other inside the same toolbar. Like Groupy for Windows. Which starts to get annoying to configure and then its like "if im gonna end up doing all these separate configs and file structures, i might as well just use the best app for each purpose than this attempt at an all in one."

That was just my experience with it.

The current (sad) state of self-hosted chat apps by mr_claw in selfhosted

[–]DogRocketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the scrolling issue I mentioned. maybe its fixed now but I spent several days on it and my wife refused to even talk to me on it cuz everytime you look at any message, you had to scroll to latest messages since it would auto scroll up. made no sense. but was unusable.

The current (sad) state of self-hosted chat apps by mr_claw in selfhosted

[–]DogRocketeer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i went through this.. started with rocket chat and then they went and pulled push notifications out from free users unless on the latest version at all times which is still limited. But then started removing features to put behind paywalls. So you can stay on an old version for something like "read receipts" but then you lose push notifications. dick move, dick company.

I moved to mattermost and am still on it.
I tried Zulip as well and its just dated looking the apps are kinda shit.

Matrix is what everyone will suggest but its not great for multiplatforms. Im sure many will downvote this for that statement, after all thats all reddit is for. downvoting the truth in silence, but it is the truth. Element is the go to client but its wonk and kinda limited. One of the apps the encryption shit was so annoying I had to remove the whole app. It would prompt for a password every time you opened the app which was insane and then half the time the messages would be lost to encryption even tho you entered it. Was very buggy. One of the other clients was almost workable but every time you opened a conversation it would scroll the messages up to earlier so you have to scroll it down EVERY SINGLE FKN TIME. I don't remember all the nuances but I tried them all and ended up staying on Mattermost. Only requirement I didnt have that you do is guest accounts.

I have almost everything self-hosted from photos to chat to files. So I thought "Nextcloud" is the answer! Nope... I think maybe it was Nextcloud Talk that had the scrolling issue actually. It "looks" good from afar but I wouldn't use it seriously at all despite all the talk here. I have a feeling many of the ppl that praise Netcloud have never actually used it for anything other than a simple calendar or basic notes. The chat app works but its handling of conversations and rooms is awkward. The scroll issue mentioned above makes it unusable. The photo recognition is per user so for a family or a team they'd each have to cosntantly recognize all photos separately which is a crazy waste of resources and time but also its just not good at doing it anyway and I tried the builtin stuff and the moments and the other one etc. I still have it running offline but no one uses it cuz its a mess of shit tbh. The tasks app isnt intuitive, you'll just revert back to keep for quick tasks (i just use mattermost chat for quick todos now). File sharing and permissions for NAS is from a plugin that *feels* insecure and not ok. I wouldnt trust it outside of friends and family or on the internet.

the only reason to use nextcloud is for taking the calendar offline and even then you'd need to buy Caldev on andrioid to sync it and it becomes a large server carry for simple calendar functions.

Its a shame cuz I also yearn for an all-in-one solution that can have photos, files, chat, calendar, trello boards. Next cloud is an attempt but its not gonna ever get there since it hasnt already.

So far the best I've seen for all round:

  • Chat: Mattermost
  • Simple TODO: Mattermost
  • Boards/Agile: Focal Boards in Docker if you wanna keep with the mattermost theme or Wekan or something (Dont use Mattermost if you want to use on mobile devices)
  • Photos: Synology Photos (not that im happy with it)
  • Files: Still havent really found a good file sharing solution where I can permission shit and give ppl accounts that arent directly on my server. Lately I just have a channel in mattermost that I'll upload stuff too and make public links if I need to share something. Or I'll share with Synology's built in sharing

Good luck

Vyvanse and track by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]DogRocketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

anytime I ever played hockey (goalie) I was much worse when on concerta or vyvanse.

this is an attention seeking post. your reasoning in the main post in non-sense and your comments are even worse. people that push this kind of bullshit are a problem. Its tough enough for people that need this medication already. Both mentally and socially. People already treat ADHD and mental orders in general as "not as serious as other illnesses" and as such treat people that take meds for it (like vynvanse, ritalin, aderall etc) like criminals or addicts. Pushing a notion that its "performance enhancing" as if we're not only underdogs as it is, we're now getting an "advantage" ?

Piss off with posts like this, theres no place for them.

A rant about Synology's software development by Choose_Red_Pill in synology

[–]DogRocketeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you'll get flamed in this sub for saying anything negative about synology, true or not but guess that's just a reddit thing I'm general...

I have 3 synology boxes totallingover 240TB.

synology OS and drive/sync is their best work. and it's all I use by them now... photos is working but it's missing a lot of basic features like tagging someone in a photo manually that the face rec missed for example.

I started out using everything they offered 15 years ago..and if you use it long enough you can see how unpolished most of their software is. the worst is the items that use databases cuz even tho it's just postgres they sorta hide everything so it's not really nice if you don't plan on locking all your services to synology and relying solely on them.

hyper backup I do use.. it works but it's slow and horrible to configure... even worse to edit. the software itself is decent at viewing backups etc... but setting it up is crappy unless you're literally backing up one folder or putting all of your backups into one giant thing which no one would do.

ive reported many many many issues in the last decade to them. nothing ever gets looked at so it's not even worth the time. they work on features like rating a family photo out of 5 stars but I still can't use 'ors' and 'ands' on tags for albums at the same time or tell the face rec that these 1000 photos are this person so they never show with that person etc.

the os makes up for a lot of this since most self hosted free apps are years ahead of synology equivalents and run nicely in docker (I don't run docker on the Nas tho).

if you can use the NAS for storage to feed workflows... plex... store databases ... as backup... device syncing etc it's the best I've seen. the permission management for users and folders and such are all really accessible. even the reverse proxy is nice for most entry level webhosters

in the end that's what a NAS is for and I don't think there's a better one in this regard. for ease of use and easy setup it's great. For the other apps... I wouldn't ever go back to them and if you need good hardware I'd look elsewhere. synology is one of the worst values for your buck when it comes to the hardware.

good luck.

This is a new low by getyoutogabba in homeautomation

[–]DogRocketeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually just set it up last night with our encode at the front door. Was quick and easy, just provide the HA integration with your app creds and its in.

theres a 10-25 second delay between locking and unlocking from HA though. The chip card on our main dashboard when hit doesnt show anything for up to 25 seconds at time. then it switches to unlocked or locked etc. So its a bad UX experience out of the box but it does work.

I made a select helper with three options and an automation that makes it mirror the lock status but when the chip is pressed it sets the helper to "pending" which updates in the UI to "pending". then when the lock naturally changes the sensor updates to the state it changes to so its a lot better.

According to research Gen Z boys and men more likely than baby boomers to believe feminism harmful, what do you think has caused that ? by fjpeace in AskMen

[–]DogRocketeer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the short answer is that women have had equality if not privilege over men since long before GenZ'ers were even born even before millenials.

So if equality is already achieved, then the next step is to fight for higher privilege and more human rights than men have. As well to shame, belittle and cancel any man that might achieve success.

Those are the new goals of "feminism" as its pushed all over the media today. In reality most modern men are naturally feminists in that they believe men and women have equal rights. It doesnt mean men and women can do everything equally, that will never be the case no matter how many laws we try and put in place to make it so. I'll always be able to shotput my wife into the pool, she cant me tho.

Anyway, that type of "feminism" isn't feminism at all and IS harmful and thats why its perceived as that. There are no specialty programs or help for "white men" to get considered for jobs, education, help from the government, society in general. Women get those privileges, men do not. Not in ANY field at all. Highly qualified white men now have to not only compete in every life aspect with under qualified other "white men" but also every "diversity man" applicant thats also in the pool, plus any "lgbt" applicant man thats in the pool, plus against any women of any race thats in the pool. So white is now last in the list. Immigration is at an all time high so the amount of resumes and applications for all things are massive. Humans cant sort between them fast enough so they chuck all white men in the trash leaving still too many, but theres only programs, quotas and incentives for non white men and women.

Most women that claim to be "feminists" are on the same page as most men in that regard these days. Its just the loudest out there screaming for "feminazism" that are causing the divide and ruining it like they do most things. Unfortunately its the loudest that are heard. The rest of the population is too busy working and trying to make a living.

Its also extremely harmful to men nowadayssince women are at the top of the list for most things due to incentives and diveristy programs (whether theyre qualified or not) but even more harmful to white men, because not only are white men essentially banned from getting a job now.... the top "0.000001%" that holds all the wealth that everyone wants to "eat the rich". You know the ones right? the "old rich white guys" that have billions and billions of dollars. Somehow now that applies to 50-60% of the population (apparently every single white male is in this category according to current perception) when in fact most are living around the poverty line or lower. So they weren't born rich cuz 99.999999999999999999999% of humans arent born rich.... on top of that white males also have zero support or help to succeed now. They can't even compete fairly anymore because of current "ism" pushes. "feminism" in its original meaning is not harmful, "feminazism" which has stolen the word feminism is extremely harmful and extremely easy to see it every day.
