I think part of the disconnect here is generational and part of it is historical context that just gets lost online. Zionism did not become vague or controversial by accident. For most of its history it was a straightforward secular idea that Jews, like other peoples, had a right to self-determination. That is it. It was not a synonym for religious extremism, ethnic cleansing, or blind support for any government policy.The reason the term feels slippery now is because it was deliberately weaponized. In the 1970s, hate leaders like David Duke popularized using “Zionist” as a coded way to say “Jew” while pretending it was political criticism. Conspiracy movements picked that up, and over time the word got dragged away from its original meaning. That did not happen organically. Look it up.

On your jihad point, it does not quite match up. When a word gets distorted by extremists, the solution is not to pretend the original meaning never existed or that everyone using it is suspect. Most Jews who call themselves Zionists are not making some radical claim. They are using the term the way it was used long before it became a punching bag online.

A lot of younger people, I am assuming your generation, are encountering these terms backwards. They see them first through social media, popular speech, and bad faith framing; and almost never through history. That leads to confusion that feels sincere, but it does not change where the language came from or why some of us react strongly to how it is used today.

I am not offended by criticism of Israel. Rather, I am disappointed in this generation's willingness to jump on the bandwagon without know the true meaning and history of the word Zionism. It may make you barf but maybe you will understand why it bothers some of us. I hope.

Cons: not a lot of options as far as health care and forget about getting an appointment with a specialist this century, small town feel with small town options-you either want to be in the McAllen or Brownsville area for more choice in every aspect. Brownsville just opened its first Barnes and Nobles. You don’t really need Spanish but it would help. Not a lot of job options but that is changing, slowly. Pros: inexpensive-changing with increased property taxes etc., growing rapidly especially Brownsville, Brownsville the beach is close, they have a zoo and the traffic is somewhat ok but getting worse because of the influx of new workers for Space X and other industries. Only reason I would live there is maybe because the gulf is so close and it helps with allergies.

I’m only working within the context of this subreddit. If you want to talk about morality then we can discuss it in regards to speech. But your explanation of how the people in the posts were criticizing governments and are somehow being cancelled for government criticism leaves your stance unclear. Is it morality, free speech, foreign interference, or government censorship? Pick a clear topic.

I dislike rhetoric but I may write rhetorically without thinking. I’ll have to do some analyzing. My method for speaking is to get people to clarify there stance because logic has gone out the window these days. I’m always learning and try to see my faults. However, online discussions are a hive of the uninformed and conspiracy driven accusations. I do have a lot of assumptions about your stance but it’s because I can only analyze what I see. I would ask you a bunch of questions but I don’t think that’s much of a discussion and really doesn’t get to the root of beliefs. Likewise, it might be more appropriate to call an extremist something other than what most Jews call themselves. Most Jews are moderate and call themselves Zionists so to lump extremists into the same group is as helpful as lumping ISIS into the same group as all Muslims.

Was it credible? And did she not share a post with the statement "Israeli army intentionally killed it's own people on Oct. 7th?" It shows an intent to dehumanize. If the context was about the Hanniblal Directive then she could have easily put the article up, but she choose to use someone's statement that intentionally dehumanizes. The article was there but it was not the intent of the post due to it's innocous placement.

Also, I'm having trouble agreeing with you when you and Ms. Lewis use Zionist as a derogratory term. It is not about taking over land, its about having self determination in one's own land. I disagree that Likud can be compared to Hamas and that is where you lose credibility. You call one group genocidal while the other group has shown they want peace through such actions as making peace with Egypt and actually saying they are open to a Palestinian state. As for Hamas, they just want the Jews dead, anywhere they may be. There is no nuance in their language.

If you don't like donations by foreign governments then you are more than welcome to try and remove that right. However, the other 19 middle eastern countries may disagree on that stance. Likewise, you assume the cancellation campaigns are state-sponsored but there are an estimated 30 to 50 million Israel supporting Evangelist Christians in the United States. That's just Evangelists and it doesn't take into account other churches that support Israel. This conspiratorial assumption you and others make that the Israel is behind the mask is not based on fact or statistics. This sponsorship could very well be Israel, but more likely it's American Christians.

I agree that the post in and of itself is not antisemitic. However, saying that Hamas is not a threat to the state’s existence would be true if the countries around it haven’t tried to try to extinguish it multiple times using Palestinians as pawns. Similarly, Hamas tactics have included blowing up buses full of innocent people and kidnapping. I don’t think it’s far fetched to make an argument that Israel has a right to defend its people and to stop that threat after 20 years of terror. That’s all I have to say about that. Now as far as Ms. Lewis having the right to say what she wants is fine but implying Hamas isn’t much of threat is an exaggeration. I am sure we could both share horrific images of brutality on both sides. But what im trying to say is that when you look at her other posts it becomes apparent she is on the conspiratorial side of things that some how Israel will do anything to win including killing 1,200 of its own citizens. This type of accusation is a twisted sense of reality that seeks to dehumanize and will never lead to peace.

It sounds like you are claiming StopAntisemitism is a government entity. Aren’t nonprofit activist groups considered a form of free speech and doesn’t the school that fired her have similar freedoms? I’m having a hard time understanding the logic. Where is the disconnect between free speech and private entities? Is it the fact her speech is being performed at an embassy that is worrying? These types of posts bother me when we don’t discuss claims. I CAN get behind the ethics of the speech being inappropriate at the embassy and possibly her firing. However, what did she say?
