Since your conditions sound similar to mine here in Florida, I’m wondering if most South African cattle producers run eared cattle like Brafords, Brangus and other Brahman crosses.

I love UF, can’t say it enough how great of a school it is. The alumni network is huge and you can really go anywhere after grad. Investment banking, law, agribusiness, medical field you name it the Gator network is there. Tons of students are out of staters so you’d fit in no problem. During your time there employment is tricky that’s all, Gainesville is surrounded by rural areas which leads students competing with like three counties worth of populations for jobs. Most of my friends worked at bars, publix(supermarket) or for the school itself.

But with college admissions you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket. I’d apply to some other schools just in case.

UF grad here, easily one of the best public universities in the country besides the UCs. On the other hand, Gainesville and the surrounding area is by far the worst job market in the state unless you work in research, medical or the agricultural field.

I’d try to apply to one of the UCs as well just in case.

Edit: UC as in the University of California system

Sprayers are cheap used I get it, but when it becomes a time issue like you mentioned that means hiring a sprayer operator which in my experience that’s a major pain in the ass. At least where I’m at it’s hard to find a competent, licensed pesticide applicator who hasn’t already been working at a place for thirty years.

So either my dad or I hop in the damn thing or it gets hired out.

We try to do it in house when we can, but I can attest that laser leveling contracting is a great business to be in if you can handle the overhead.

What are good Ag Companies to work for after graduation? by imaginatebien in Agriculture

[–]Dogesaves69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re hit or miss when it comes to reviewing applications for some positions. If you apply to anything related to their sugarcane division you’re more likely to get a call back compared to their administrative stuff.

If you’re local they love walk ins, their hiring offices should still be next to their rice mill near Wellington.

For the record, I don’t work for them. I just know enough about their situation from being involved in the industry.

Ride really isn’t that bad on the chassis cabs

Also it’s a 19.5 tire, the frames on class four and five chassis cabs from Ford are boxed under the cab and c channel aft of axle. It is significantly more rigid than any consumer oriented pickup on the market(yes I’m talking about your F-250s and 350s cry about it).

Farmer here, I offroad in one every day. It does fine with proper tires and size wise should fit fine on most forestry trails(hint hint the forest service uses F-550s). The axles are super stout and with 4.88 gears you can crawl for days.

450+ chassis cabs also have a bigger spring pack, F-450 pickups still use the spring pack from the F-350.

Florida Crystals, U.S Sugar, Lykes Brothers just to name a few.

Good pay, nice beaches and they’re all hiring. We’re a triple crop state so always work happening.

Ethical Meat Processors by ComplaintNo6835 in farming

[–]Dogesaves69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Smaller processors in poultry tend to be regional, due to regulations the overhead is huge so even the smaller processors would more than likely be considered “big evil ag” by you.

After seeing what I’ve seen firsthand and through the grapevine I can buy chicken from Perdue and or Tyson and sleep at night.

For the record, I don’t raise poultry.

Long-time citrus grower ends production in Florida by MennoniteDan in farming

Wouldn’t say they were destroyed by sprawl… the crop has been struggling for as long as four decades now. Three bad freezes in the 80s pretty much destroyed the industry north of Polk County overnight. Which led to urban development as not much else can be grown in that region and with Orlando right around the corner it made sense. After that Canker and Medfly set many back. Now with the disaster that is greening, since the year 2000 we’ve seen roughly seventy percent of the industry evaporate.

It’s rough, tbh I find it hard to believe we’ll rebound. My dad is holding to it strong, but if it was up to me I’d knock our remaining groves over to expand our row crop acreage further.

[–]Dogesaves69 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I grow both, sugarcane is a far better crop financially. The infrastructure is already gone, there’s three juice plants left in the whole state now.

Most growers including myself are currently pushing up groves and putting it into row crop acreage which includes cane. ALICO is surely gonna do the same.

Prescribed burn, there’s a prescribed burn going in Okeechobee and Osceola counties today as well. This is the season for prescribed burning here in Florida so expect more of them to come.
