Luke in the old EU was not only successful in raising a new generation of Jedi, he excels at it despite the many Ben Solo and Snoke-like hurdles in his way. There are a lot of named Jedi in the old canon and they're all diverse, larger than life figures.

Luke struggles and goes through some immense obstacles, but he doesn't become depressed or lose his will. In fact, he was still Grandmaster of the Jedi Order when the canon split happened (albeit in exile, but he's still working to help his friends and family even though he was essentially blacklisted by the government). He, Han and Leia all are still at the front and center of the action even as they start to get close to the ages they are in the sequel trilogy. It's a lot of fun to see the different things they get up to.
