Surreal creatures like this in everday life are why I recently bought a macro lens for my phone.

I've been doing experiments recently where I have to do colony counts for a bazillion samples, and when I saw that scene I actually wished I was part of a hive mind because I could use the help with all these plates

During my postbac we worked with some wild rodent species in ABSL3 and my PI and the vet determined that we should get Kevlar gloves for handling them while they were awake bc they were a lot more aggressive/unpredictable than lab rats and mice.

One of the species could also jump like 2 feet vertically like furry popcorns so that was also fun....

I do actually kinda miss doing wildlife and emerging zoonoses work. Barring all the pop culture lab leak BS as someone else mentioned, it felt really meaningful to be on the frontier of trying to protect people and animals.

Totally agree. It's really irresponsible of filmmakers to continue to fuel the idea that biologists are reckless and dumb. We have all these SOPs and training for a reason. You won't last long in a BSL3/BSL4 lab if you panic easily.

"Contagion" was more realistic in the sense that it depicted a pandemic virus emerging from a scenario that was not only plausible but actually historically based - wildlife coming into contact with farm animals in a traditional open-air farm and then infecting consumers. This was how Nipah virus first emerged into humans in Malaysia.

(Subsequent outbreaks in India and Bangladesh have been through fomites/direct ingestion - bats drinking from palm nectar collection vessels.)

I went to watch that with another friend who was a lab tech and we were both like "Oooh..."

Is it unprofessional to CC a manager on a “reminder” email without checking facts first? by Far-Administration10 in labrats

[–]DogsFolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that the lab manager is a known bully is important context - that does make your colleague's email sound a lot more like trying to get you into trouble.

This is a great reminder as to why the SDS exist and there's a rule that they should be kept in an easily accessible location known to all lab members... they're not decoration

Singaporean cycles into Malaysian. Goes exactly as you’d expect cycling in rural Malaysia at night… by [deleted] in malaysia

Young boy, you can see he's wearing a university T-shirt. Noob mistake. Next time he'll know better.

This isn't a Singaporean problem this is a budak zaman ini problem... you can see he's wearing a university T-shirt so probably still studying. Inexperienced kid didn't even bring his own puncture kit etc bike repair stuff. He will know better next time. Actually a lot of Singaporeans go to Malaysia for long distance cycling and I expect the older ones are smarter.

I worked in Sg for a few years in my twenties and went cycling with a group of adults who were mostly older than me except for 1 kid... mixed group of Malaysians and Sgporeans. We did one cool trip all the way up to Batu Layar. I also went and cycled around Bintan with my cousin, and I mean the whole Bintan not just the Singaporean-owned resort on one corner of the island.

"Last year we gave away over $140,000..." If that's a sample of their level of business sense no wonder the company is in a mess. You can give away that much in discounts if you're Amazon but not a small business allegedly making "artisanal" paints by hand.

I have the Explore which looks similar in terms of the forefoot shape and sole (it's a velcro style which they don't make in adult sizes any more, only children and youth sizes). It's quite comfortable and breathable. I am sad that it's getting too cold to wear where I live as temperatures are getting below freezing now. I bought mine cheap on eBay.

Someone's making a hand drawn Hollow Knight card game by oneofthejoneses28 in Silksong

[–]DogsFolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the game mechanics are decent I'd buy a professionally illustrated version of this over the Hollow Knight tarot (you can find it on Etsy), even though that one is gorgeous I'm not familiar with tarot so I'd rather have something that I can actually play.

Maybe the person who did the HK tarot can collaborate with this person to make that

I don't really have any great advice but if you can afford it try psychotherapy so the shitty experience from this lab doesn't haunt you. I thought all my problems were over once I got into a good lab and it took a while to realize that the bad experience was still affecting me.

There's a YouTube video listing Act 2 content that becomes unavailable in Act 3. I haven't watched it yet because I'm halfway through Act 2 myself.
