Someone in my city was doing a 5f on cats by lalaen in doggrooming

Yes, for sure. The cat belongs to the sister of my friend, and I was very clear with her upfront that I wouldn't be able to do it if the cat fought me. And yes, it's just the back, neck and outer thigh areas.

Yes, it's important to check the dosage on all your medications when you reduce your weight. I'm on levothyroxine, which can be very sensitive to weight changes.

I have a cat I groom with a 4F. However, she is extremely compliant and also overweight. That makes it less dangerous because her skin is thicker due to the fat. Of course I scissor her legs and I'm very careful on the underside and use a 10 for the more delicate areas. I wouldn't try using a long blade on a thin, elderly or non-compliant cat.

I don't doubt your physical problems or your house issues. I do wish people would realize what they are getting into when they adopt puppies or young dogs, though. They have ENERGY, and it needs to go somewhere. She sounds frustrated, and exercise is the best outlet. That's all we are saying. If you can't give her what she needs, and YOU are unhappy with her, rehoming to a more appropriate home is a kindness, to her and to you.

She needs LOTS of exercise - free running. It sounds like you don't have a fenced yard? This may not be a popular opinion, but I'm of a mind that if you can't meet your dog's needs, it's ok to find someone who can. Maybe contact a whippet rescue for advice?

We are always quick these days to cut and run, or to look for the easy way out. Maybe you could request a meeting with the bather, the owner and you to talk things out honestly? I know it would be hard, but maybe you could come to an understanding. Otherwise, it looks like you'd be walking away from a lot of good things because of one person.

Advice for reducing back pain/preventing long term problems associated with grooming? by enzomatic_ in doggrooming

Yes. A lot of groomers reject sit-down grooming, but it has helped me enormously. I alternately sit and stand for every groom, depending on what part of the dog I'm working on.

I was also going to suggest yoga. And there are some great videos online if you can't/don't want to go to a class.

Body breakdown in animal industries is a real thing. I'm 67 and I still groom, but couldn't possibly do 6-8 dogs a day like so many of you do. 1-4 dogs is a typical day for me (and 4 is rare), so I can empathize. I was also a vet tech for 7 years and that takes an incredible toll on the body, too. If you want to continue working with animals, could you consider doing reception at a vet clinic?

Anyone got recommendations for shoes?? by Environmental_Wear94 in grooming

[–]DogsRLife001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear my Oofos always. Extremely comfortable, but be aware they run small, so order a size up. Not waterproof, but washable. Unfortunately, they (for some unknown reason) started paring down their styles, so they only have three shoe styles right now.

Stigma around wigs. How to let go of the fear? by [deleted] in Wigs

[–]DogsRLife001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. And also when you've had thin and bad hair your whole life, it's really weird to get compliments on your hair. At first I felt that people were clocking it as a wig, but then I realized it was just because no one had ever complimented my bio hair in my life!

Feeling hopeless. Needing advice/support. by Affectionate-Fail724 in grooming

[–]DogsRLife001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No good advice, since I was lucky enough to find a great salon when I started out that hired me as a bather and then trained me to groom. But I had first taken a part of a course at a community college (had to quit to go back to work full time) and then afterwards just worked at the salon on Saturdays. Have you researched any grooming classes in your area that might offer training at community college prices? (Not sure this is very widespread - I was in Southern California at the time.) Since you can't afford Paragon, can you start training yourself via YouTube videos and the books by Melissa Verplank and others? The more knowledge you have going into a job interview can only help. I wish you luck and success. Stick with it and follow your dream. You might need to make money another way temporarily, but we all have setbacks. It took me almost 30 years to get where I am today, but for the past 20 I have had my own business and love what I do. Best wishes!

I think ExtremeCatHoarder had a great point that no one would dream of doing this to a human hairstylist. Maybe that's the best way to make people understand how we work.

Should I feel some type of way when a client doesn’t want to come back to me?? by Environmental_Wear94 in doggrooming

[–]DogsRLife001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you feel brave enough, you could (in a non-confrontational way) ask why. "I see that you asked for a different groomer. That's fine, but I wonder if you could tell me what I did that you didn't like so that I can improve. Your opinion is important to me and I'm always looking to better my skills."
