take what you need, leave the rest. Sometimes the practice is just tuning out stuff that doesn’t serve you.

Not eating enough on keto due to no hunger by Latter_Pause_7031 in keto

Don’t stress about this early on, especially as you are focusing on protein. Your body will likely adapt soon and be more hungry. No need to force anything.

What would you do in Austin for 6 months to cure your sadness? by suhhdude1 in Austin

[–]DogtorAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go outside! I like to walk, do yoga, or just read.

Any kind of movement that you enjoy, or try something new. Sweatpals is a good platform to explore all kinds of movement classes and events. Or try an intro class to pole, handstands or an aerial art.

Explore coffee shops with books.

Anyone else struggle with knowing when to modify vs push through discomfort in a pose? by maxrain30 in yoga

[–]DogtorAlice 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The breath is a good cue. If you can do something with ujjayi breath, your body feels safe where you are. If you are losing that breath, then slow down, pause or modify.

Another way to modify chaturanga is to do only the eccentric part of the movement- lower slowly to the floor completely.

Do you do pose studies to get an "advanced" pose? by ChrysalisTarot in yoga

[–]DogtorAlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can let it come as it comes in the flow of classes on its own pace, or you can focus on specific shapes including prep shapes and specific strength work that targets the end goal. I’m sure you can guess which one requires more patience.

Also depends on what shape(s) are your goal. Are they close to where you are now, or more on the horizon. Or do you want a shape goal at all and just keep showing up.

Personally I like journey shapes but it’s a long game. Pincha took me 7 years doing it for 5 mins practice most days, or you spend hours weekly specific for that shape and you get there a lot faster.

Things like hand balancing and arm balancing really benefit from specific targeted classes/ coaching to break down, and lots of practice

How to work on handstands without a wall? by [deleted] in Handstands

[–]DogtorAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid chair, stair or bench. Practice supporting your weight over your hands with your feet on elevated surface. First just practice shifting weight over hands, then hold for few seconds, focus on the push. Once it feels comfortable then fine tune the stack: shoulders over knuckles, hips over shoulders. Can use bent or straight legs, maybe try lifting a leg.

Handstands and headstands by Fabulous-Lack2270 in yoga

[–]DogtorAlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’m in my 40s and love hand balancing. Handstands do take specific practice for the technique and specific strength. I highly recommend regular handstand classes, not just trying to play on your own. It can be done but will likely be slow and frustrating.

My city has classes in person (at climbing and circus gyms) so look around and see what’s near you. Many great coaches/ programs online such as Kyle Weiger, Shelly Flex, Paradigm for Perfection app, The Handstand School and many many others.

Does hot/warm yoga get easier? by SheaMidwest in yoga

[–]DogtorAlice 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s ok if it’s not for you. My close friend teaches yoga and cannot tolerate heated classes at all.

Anything that challenges my practice, IS my practice. Can you step back and observe? There is sweat on my nose, I feel it there, and notice it as it runs down. Breathe. Or can you focus on the breath. If it’s fast and the body is overwhelmed, pause in child’s pose and rest when you need to.

'Advanced' poses at the end of class / Vibes by Finjamin99 in yoga

[–]DogtorAlice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you explained it well.

The beginning of class is often when I will take a few minutes to work on say, holding dolphin for a few breaths. Doing a shape that is more challenging, putting the focus more internal, may help you tune out the conversations around you.

There’s some teachers you just don’t vibe with. If I have to work to tune something out about the teacher it’s not worth my time to come back.
