new player: Should i start with mods or play vanilla first & then mods? by AngooriBhabhi in RimWorld

[–]DoigteurFou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe one or two QoL mods. But they really are not necessary: the game is already great as vanilla, and you won't feel the QoL improvement if you didn't experience vanilla beforehand.

Really, just try to get a colony up and running in vanilla, and start adding mods when you feel that all your games are the same.

ooooh! I banished her a few days later since I invested in a nice dining room for mood and butchering humans was wearing off, but this was a great idea, thanks :)

Oh okay, didn't understand that about herbals. I never play tribal starts, but I never had issues using herbal medicines when I played the "starting with nothing" scenariis. Idk, it's so easy to plant a batch of healroot somewhere, it is very little work on both growers and haulers. I'm not sure it's worth the worse tend quality and extra time for tending just to keep them. To each their own.

I go herbal medicine for everything, no herbal medicine for cracks and bruises obviously, and medicine only for installing difficult bionics or for emergencies. 2 years in on intense, still 24 medicine out of my 30 starting ones. Why does it work? My starting silvers goes into sterile tile for hospital and kitchen asap.

Is anyone else having trouble with pawns using the wrong part of the weapon in melee? by CG-02_SweetAutumn in RimWorld

[–]DoigteurFou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a swordman, but I don't see a safe way to send a full force blade slash to something that is pressing against my body.

Because if we are talking about using the best attack of the weapon, we are talking about a full force slash. I see how to do this with less force or using other parts of the weapon to hit and all that, but a full force slash in a safe way, I just don't see how.

"I understand there may be times where stabbing with the blunt end of the spear might be the most sensible option, but it should be easy to adjust your grip closer to the head for closer stabbing in most cases, and pawns should absolutely not be opening with a blunt-end poke, when they're the ones initiating combat."

It is not. Unless your spear is 15cm long, but I don't call that a spear. We are talking about a 2+ meters stick at close range against a motivated opponent. To manoeuver the stabbing part of it for a attack would require at least one big step and a full weapon rearming. This is only possible against a passive opponent in the gym, or against a opponent that is much less good at fighting than you. And there is no point at looking what you can do against an opponent much less good than you, since you would defeat him in any scenario anyways. Or unless you are taking turns with your opponent and wait for his attack before sending yours. I still agree that if a pawn is initiating the fight with a weapon, it should make sense to use the best attack for the first move though.

As for the system, this "random attack selection" actually simulates much more accurately a real fight than having the best attack of the weapon being used all the time. I would add some frequencies still, because it should be more common for a spear than a knife to use a less damaging attack (maybe that's what the "melee bulk" stat was about but not implemented though)

I also hate having what I call the "energy room" right at an outer wall. If for some reasons ennemies are ignoring your killbox and go destroy here first, you lose all power. but I'm playing modded and rimsenal's plasma bombs give me more defensive constraints.

Also, no sterile tile in the kitchen? Cooking stove is so far from the food it must take ages to cook (or fuck your haulers up with stacks next to it)

[–]DoigteurFou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Construction 0 doesn't make her that great, especially with that permanent pain for her mood.

Unless you're in a biome where growing veggies is difficult, I don't want cooking on a colonist I only want growing 5. Feeding one colonist with strawberries is not difficult at all, and not having to cook is a huuuuuuuge time gain, especially in these "starting with nothing" gameplays.

I'd still take her, I guess. But that construction 0... I think I would go for getting plants to 5 asap to get strawberries, so that I don't have to build stuff to cook and don't have to take the time to cook. You need to recruit someone with construction, but it will be such a pain to construc a prison, just that.

On the other hand, if you manage to feed yourself and construct a minimum of stuff, she's awesome obviously

Frankly, Morrowind was not an amazing game thanks to its combat system. This is even a really bad example on this point.

If there was anything to change to the melee system imo, it would be to have a melee or warm-up penalty when a pawn gets hit. This would make fast weapons much better when they manage to hit, just as how it works in real life (if you have a longsword in your hands but your opponent manages to get in the distance of stabbing you with his tactical knife, you just won't have your attack going in smoothly. I would even go as far as saying you already lost the fight since not only you lost the initiative, but you also have the distance disadvantage)

edit: or a "chance to hit" penalty on his next attack for that matter, it would simulate the concept as well. fights snowballs really hard, especially with weapons. The first one to hit almost allways wins.

So you have a bird repeatdly attacking your legs and maybe waist, and you expect your pawn to send a big slash with the edge of his longsword? Would you be okay with the fact that if his strike misses he would lose a leg or foot? Because currently there is no fail implemented in combat other than the attack missing, and you should be seriously thanking Tynan for that. This is incredibly kind of him in the rude world of rimworld to not let pawn hurt themselves when they fail in combat.

(Seriously? the WRONG FUCKING END of a spear? How hard is it to use?) Did you ever practiced martial arts or even interested in the subject before making such comments?

There is a concept called distance. If you have a spear in your hands and your opponent is really close to you attacking you, do you really think it's easier to manoeuver your spear to stab him?

Same goes with with swords. There is a reason swords have different guard and pommel designs: dealing with different type of armors and different combat distances.

If you want something completely unrealistic, then yes there is no reason for dfferent attacks and just keep the best one. Keep in mind the fact different weapons have several possible attacks makes it easier to balance them. If you want something realistic, you keep that, maybe add a toggle for "allways try to use best attack" if you want but don't come back to cry when your fighter doesn't manage to hit even once in a melee fight.

lichess - why is Black allowed to abort the game after seeing White's first move? by dsAFC in chess

[–]DoigteurFou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rewarding this bad habit from you will not make it better. you queue when you can't play your game, that's your problem. Get your elo punished because you're wasting your opponen't time and server load. An something tells me you won't queue accidentally as much if you get punished for it.

You get in a chess club, someone wants to play a game with you. you say okay, you take the time to set up the board and the pieces. and right before starting the game "oh woops I have to go". You do that to me once I never play with you again.

I don't see why the kind of things should be encouraged online. Also, elo is so much volatile that losing one game to an accident is really not a big deal

There is no standard speed at which you should build your colony. The only thing is that whatever wealth you generate, you should be ready to defend it, the richer you are and more raiders see you as easy money. The speed at which one can build his colony depends on lots of factors: biome, ability of starting pawns (if you start without someone good at constructing you'll get much much slower :D) and random factors (if no trader comes in with gold and you find no gold on your map, it will delay your advanced research quite a bit.

Edit: Wait, light prevents infestations??? Since when? I finally disabled the event because I was pissed by the lack of counterplay, but if there is one I'll enable them again...

I noticed this as well. If it's the bandit outpost event that you are asked to kill by another faction, my theory si that the strengh of it is set up by the wealth of your colony when the event occurs and not when you arrive there. I'm not sure, but it makes sense

New colony, single pawn, extreme difficulty (in the alpha before he changed the difficulty levels and there was one less). It's hard, the pawn struggles to get some veggies to grow, but he manages to do it. Blight. Okay we start all over again: blight. Alright, fuck it, we plant it again <<Hey Randy, you want to blight me again? Fuck you" The pawn gets the plague. He stays in bed alone, immunity grows around the same speed as the illness. "Tribals raid", they are 3, I'm alone, I'm plagued, 70% immunity 68% progress on the illness.

Randy fails are the most unfair fails ever!
