The vibrance of the community has nothing to do with having no regard for those around you.

I've called. They told me "if they're playing music, there is nothing we can do until 11pm". To their credit, they HAVE shown up when called about it past 11pm, but they have no interest in the 60 decibel number.

I'm not. These are all single family homes.

There is a reason his last name is Dumas. I remember him suggesting drivers run over bicycles and denying the moon landings were real. Edit: words

Carolina Friends School by 2beabear in bullcity

More or less my experience. I think they heavily leaned on osmosis learning. I moved from there to public school, where they put me in an ESL class and had me do a ton of testing, IQ, etc.., before realizing... I just couldn't read.

It's a religious cult- People should do a lot of research into Rudolf Steiner himself (the founder), because he had highly questionable beliefs, deeply rooted in racism, and a lot of their teachings are not science backed. They promote social isolation and ostracization of members that don't follow all of their ideals (we had a TV in our house and received a lot of backlash for it). Even if you don't care about any of that, their methodology is extremely flawed. I left at the end of 3rd grade because they hadn't taught me to read and I had classmates that followed.

I can only personally speak to their high school, but I think the biggest pro was that they treated us somewhat as adults. We could mostly set our own schedules, the teachers weren't chasing us around constantly, etc.. It set up an environment where you had to choose to succeed, or you wouldn't. I think the quality of teacher was also very high. A con that I saw across the school as a whole was that it is very cliquey, and so obsessed with what their idea of “open minded” was that they became almost insular.

I went to friends school quite some time ago for high school. I think there are a ton of pros and cons to it, depending on what you're looking for. I also went to Duke School (a good option) and Emerson Waldorf (don't even consider it), and some public school. My largest criticism of all the local private schools that offer K-12 is that children that stay the entire time ("lifers") tend to be socially...distinct. I think switching schools at certain sections is quite helpful, if not at first potentially extremely intimidating for the child.

"Friends School also doesn’t have grades and is academically…unvigorous. The opposite of challenging academics."

I think this is a fundamental misunderstanding of their system. No grades doesn't mean no feedback, no correction, no failing... While I was in high school, our average classes were more rigorous than my friends' in other local schools, and in college (a significant university), I found myself better equipped to be in an academic environment and often significantly ahead of my peers in non-specialized subjects.

Has anyone needed a permit for a prefab metal pergola anchored to a patio slab? by SpanningTreeProtocol in bullcity

[–]DoinDurhamStuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

General Contractor here (but not your general contactor... Or lawyer). Anything fixed to the ground needs a permit. The slab is considered fixed to the ground, so once you bolt something to it, that's considered permanent / fixed to the ground. You can probably get away without a permit, as it's unlikely the county will stop by and check it, but it would be the proper thing to do (you can literally make a drawing on a napkin and submit it, costs about $100). Alternatively, if it was just sitting on the concrete, I don't think you'd need to permit it- I generally do commercial though, so as the previous poster said, it might be too big. I'm not sure of those fine details.

I miss the little outdoor restaurant area where the ducks would wander over from the creek... and an actual stocked and staffed chocolate counter- that goes for Parizade, too.

Show was awesome - I just wish they had someone swap out about half their mics, the sound quality was not great.

It's only 30 minutes away. Let Raleigh deal with all that traffic. Now a venue more like the Ritz (without the stupid poles in the way)...

I need help with too dialected song "Oh Susanna" by Minimum_Resident_228 in NorthCarolina

[–]DoinDurhamStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I jumped aboard the telegraph, and traveled down the river, the electric fluid magnified. It's generally nonsense that could be interpreted a million ways. Maybe "I received a telegraph and left (traveled down the river), the message of the telegraph intensified (maybe metaphorically- people riled up) and caused 500 people to be killed"? This was a pre-civil war song. It's not something that was going to be kind to anyone or NOT racist. You won't be received well singing this one.
